The winners of the 2007 Ursa Major Awards were announced this Saturday, at Morphicon 2008 in Columbus, Ohio.[1]

Nominees and award winners were chosen by popular vote through the preceding months. Each of the ten award categories had at least five nominations. In total, 201 ballots were received from fifteen countries.[2]

Six awards went to active fandom members, three of whom had won in the two preceding years. Author Kyell Gold won Best Novel and Best Short Fiction twice in the last three years, gaining both in the 2006 awards.

At least one winner, D.C. Simpson, was there to collect the award in person, being a guest of honor at the convention. It is the third time Simpson's Ozy and Millie has won the award in book or strip form. Despite the strip's imminent retirement, it may yet win a fourth award, as a final collection remains to be published.

Sat 3 May 2008 - 23:00

Cartoonist D.C. Simpson has announced plans to retire daily webcomic Ozy and Millie later this year, after a decade-long run of over 2,200 strips.[1][2]

The strip is to be completed with a final storyline and print collection, possibly followed by other projects involving the characters.

Simpson cited ongoing personal development as the reason for the change, finding a lessening ability to "deliver good [strips] that are up to my standards".

Update: The Funday PawPet Show, Megaplex, and for the Furry Costume Information Exchange have been restored.

A RAID storage facility holding data and code for several furry sites has failed, leading to downtime and uncertainty over their recovery.[1]

Sites known to be affected center around the Florida Furs, and include the Funday PawPet Show, Megaplex, the Furry Costume Information Exchange (hosting the FURSUIT mailing list and an archive of fursuit-related stories), JR's Poinkcasts (also available elsewhere),[2] and resources for furry ham radio enthusiasts.

IRC server lion.anthrochat.net is also affected. As it was the provider of IRC services for the Anthrochat network, channel and nickname registrations may be lost. The network itself remains online, and a temporary replacement is in place on another server.

RBW

RBW 2008 co-chairman Foxberance is "excited"; three days after opening registration, over 100 tickets of varying levels have been sold. If 350 are sold, he promises to hire a bouncy castle.[1]

With over eight months to go, the convention is close to matching half of the 242 tickets sold for RBW 2007. This figure includes over twenty Platinum sponsor tickets at £150 (~US$300) each, which offer the holder: access to the hospitality suite; a free meal, signed print, and trip on the London Eye with the Guests of Honor; a T-shirt; express sign-in; and access to the traditional boat party.[2]

The first confirmed Guest of Honor for 2008 is popular fursuit maker Latin Vixen. A number of guests are yet to be announced, including at least two other Guests of Honor. RBW 2008 will have a number of other Guests and VIPs, including Timothy Albee and Fatkraken.[3]

Sun 9 Mar 2008 - 00:00

Organizers today opened registration for British furry event RBW 2008, which this year runs from 27-30 November and is based at the Royal National Hotel in the heart of London[1]

One of the main events of the weekend will be the traditional night-time boat trip along the River Thames. While previous years featured live acts on board, this year the trip will be restricted to music, conversation and sightseeing.[2]

The forums of online furry community Furtopia are down, and will not be restored in their current form, says site administrator WhiteShepherd.[1]

The site suffered several attacks believed to be rooted in vulnerabilities in the forum software, Ikonboard. A hacker reportedly vandalized the forums, defaced the websites of hosted furry artists, and ultimately erased the hard drive on which the site was stored. Just hours after a three-day rebuild following the attack, the site was "destroyed" again.

In his announcement, WhiteShepherd blames splinter forum LOLfurries for the attack, saying that "passwords and private messages" were stolen, and "re-posted on their forums in the interest of providing [them] amusement."

However, regulars of LOLfurries disclaim responsibility for the hacker's actions.[2]

As Furry Weekend Atlanta 2008 wrapped up its fifth year, convention staff counted 1,046 registered participants as of its closing ceremonies, once again a 37% increase over the previous year's count.[1]

By surpassing the one-thousand-member mark, Furry Weekend Atlanta solidified its ranking as the fourth largest furry convention, a position it attained the previous year.

Madius created the Year of the Rat banner and marched with other rat fursuiters in the fursuit parade as the character Squeaky

Update: In April, AAE reported a new attendance figure: 2423. The prior figure omitted dealer and marketplace registrations.

Further Confusion 2008, held January 24-28, broke both its own record for attendance and worldwide records for the number of fursuiters in the fursuit parade.

While Further Confusion 2007 had 2062 attendees,[1] this year's event had 2311, a 12 percent increase.[1] The number of fursuiters in the parade also increased, breaking the record of 353 set at Anthrocon 2007.[2] In contrast, art show sales fell slightly, from US$53,881[3] to $52,068.[4]

The exact number of fursuiters in the parade is disputed. Video evidence suggests at least 354 started the parade,[5] while photographs taken outside the gift shop suggest 371 at that point.[6] Conversely, an observer outside the dealers room reported only 352.[7] The official count, taken by an observer at the Coffee Garden, was 387.[1][4][8][9]

Nominations for the 2007 Ursa Major Awards are now open.[1] The awards celebrate the best anthropomorphic art and literature first published during a particular year.

The awards are selected through a two-stage process of nomination and voting. Members of the public send in up to five nominations in each of the ten categories. The top nominations in each category are then presented for a public vote.
