Furry Art Pile, an art archive and social networking site, has ceased operation after a little less than two years.

Wed 6 Aug 2008 - 23:00

Fur Affinity has resumed operations after more than a month of being offline. The site came back online the evening of August 5, 2008. It had been down since July 1, 2008, when Fur Affinity experienced what site owner Dragoneer described as a "server hardware fault"[1]

During the duration of the outage, all FA-hosted pages showed an angry Fender stomping his computer in sheer anger, followed by a notice about the failure and a link to the forum thread, although this was switched for the Fur Affinity Forums logo a few days prior to the restoration.

All comments, journal posts, shouts and submitted media posted prior to the outage were kept and have now been restored with the re-opening of Fur Affinity.

BBC Sport has unveiled a title animation featuring several anthropomorphic animals as part of their coverage of the Beijing Olympics.[1]

Created by Jamie Hewlett, illustrator of the virtual band Gorillaz and with music by Gorillaz creator Damon Albarn, the animation is based on Journey to the West; an ancient Chinese tale of pilgrimage to retrieve Buddhist scriptures which mixes adventure, allegory, and spiritual enlightenment. Both band members were born in the Year of the Monkey, and were fans of the British TV series Monkey.[2][3]

Depicted in the animation are lead characters S?n Wùk?ng, the Monkey King, and his golden-banded staff; Xuánzàng the monk; Zh? B?jiè (or Pigsy), once field marshal of the Milky Way, wielding his rake; and Sh? Wùjìng (Sandy), an immortal banished from heaven for smashing a crystal goblet, with his monk's spade.

The same story inspired elements of manga and anime such as Dragon Ball, InuYasha, and Ranma ½.

ArtSpots

All-ages anthropomorphic art gallery ArtSpots has announced its merger with sister site JaxPad, effective immediately.[1] In addition, ArtSpots is offering an art student scholarship, and running a "give two cents, get two cents" promotion designed to increase comments.[2][3]

ArtSpots and JaxPad already shared the same database, but ArtSpots only showed the art of those vetted by a review process. ArtSpots will now cater to artists of all skill levels, with special recognition for those it previously featured. Site spokescheetah Seurat said these artists would be referred to as compagnon (journeymen), with the prospect of a higher "master" level in the future.

Furry Weekend Atlanta 2009 has announced the Guests of Honor for the sixth installment of the convention: Matthew Ebel a.k.a. Hali of Firpine and, Moonstalker a.k.a. Richard Foley.[1]

Mon 23 Jun 2008 - 23:00

Furry Weekend Atlanta will not be held during the usual Valentine's Day weekend next year - instead, the fourth largest furry convention has been moved to March 19-22 for 2009, and presumably for all FWAs to come.[1] The change in dates was primarily due to space conflicts with a large cheering competition taking place in Atlanta during the same weekend.[2]

The convention has also changed hotels for 2009, switching from a two-year run with the Sheraton to move to the larger Hilton Atlanta hotel.

A new hotel and the steampunk theme were the most noticeable things about Califur this year. Held May 15-18 at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine, California, the fifth Califur convention attracted 587 registered attendees.[1]

After con staff felt that they had outgrown the Holiday Inn, they arranged for Califur 4 to be held at the Hyatt Regency. Califur 4 did not come close to filling the event space in the hotel, as there was a wedding, a senior prom, and other events the same weekend.[2][3][4]

Hotel staff put up a black curtain to separate Califur areas from space being used by the other events, which annoyed some Califur attendees.[2][5][6] There were reports that non-Califur people, some possibly drunk, were disregarding the curtain and bothering Califur attendees.[7][8]

Some attendees felt that the convention was unwelcome at the hotel,[6][5][9] but most still admit that individual hotel staff were friendly or at least professionally polite.[10][2]
