Isle of Swaps Review: Don't Swap This One Out

Thu 26 Sep 2024 - 17:25

I mentioned in my preview for this game a while back that I’ve spent a lot of time playing card games, and those are always some of my favorites. I had a lot of fun playing that demo and I’m very excited to be coming back to it for this review. It's easily some of the most fun I’ve had with a card game in a long time and it has always managed to put a smile on my face thus far. If you enjoy card games like I do, you’re in for a treat.

Iron Meat (Xbox) Review

Thu 19 Sep 2024 - 16:51

I’m not gonna beat around the bush: Iron Meat is friggin’ awesome! This was a game that never really entered my radar at all so I really had no idea what I was to expect. All I did know was that it’s another game from Retroware, the guys who published the Angry Video Game Nerd games, and that it was another retro style game. Gonna be honest, I’m so glad I went into this knowing very little cause, holy meat pie, this game is, like I said so eloquently at the beginning, friggin’ awesome!

Bearnard Review

Wed 11 Sep 2024 - 18:32

Forced to go on a quest to retrieve a legendary bow to save his home woodland, Bernard grabs his trusty bow and helpful sidekick owl Blue and embarks on an epic platforming, card grabbing, arrow shooting adventure. There’s a refinement of the gameplay formula that the game crafts that allows for a real honing of strategies and possibilities as you proceed through Bearnard’s many levels. I found myself thinking two steps ahead and contemplating the possibilities of combat and exploration more and more with every obstacle I faced and overcame. Whilst doing that, the player is treated to some unique witty writing for the characters’ dialogue and notes found around the world, which added to the charm of it all. Bearnard was enjoyable to pick up and easy to come back to over and over as I progressed.

WitchSpring R Review: A Witchy Adventure

Mon 9 Sep 2024 - 16:05

WitchSpring R is one of the most unique RPGs I’ve ever played and it's a lot of fun. So what is WitchSpring R? It's a remaster of Witch Spring, a mobile game by Korean developer KIWIWALKS that released in 2018. It went on to have a few sequels before they started getting adapted to consoles starting with this games predecessor: Witch Spring 3 Re:Fine. WitchSpring R definitely doesn’t feel like a mobile game and it most certainly isn’t. It's a full blown remaster boasting improved graphics, gameplay elements etc. I’ve never played the mobile games and hadn’t heard of this series until I got the opportunity to play and review it. But I think even those familiar with the series would be able to enjoy this.

Kitsune Tails Review

Thu 5 Sep 2024 - 19:56

Platformers are almost as popular as roguelikes these days. There are so many examples of ones that are pretty good, using the same tried and true formula for the genre, not innovating way too much and providing a decent amount of content. There are far fewer examples of games like Kitsune Tails, which manages to surprise you over and over again with its nonstop parade of new level ideas, wonderful costume & ability changes, and a wealth of content to perfect. Rarely does something come along that is truly a wondrous addition to the plethora of platforming options like Kitune Tails. It has its faults, but they are so easily looked beyond in favor of appreciating what was so lovingly crafted here.

The emotions are felt to the core and I would die for Chesley. The bestest boy travels the Scottish isles with his human companion, Cailey, as he helps her recover from the loss in her past and finally says farewell to the north. What a masterpiece of story driven art and a must play for anyone looking for a game that really moves you and swells the feelings in your soul.

Exophobia (Xbox) Review

Sat 24 Aug 2024 - 18:25

I’m just going to cut straight to the chase: Exophobia is a barebones metroidvania-style FPS set on a crashed ship with its main redeeming quality being its pixel art style.

Genopanic Review - Nothing to Panic About

Mon 19 Aug 2024 - 10:17

Ah Genopanic. It's without a doubt the most Metroid non-Metroid game I’ve ever played. It has a lot of those same themes and elements but also does manage to stand out on its own.

FixFox Review

Fri 16 Aug 2024 - 14:12

What if we wanted to take on the climate change crisis by simply modifying our DNA so that we took on animal traits like fur so that we could regulate our body temps? Or work out medical issues that overtake our bodies with a fresh new species takeover? That’s the baseline of the story of “FixFox”, a solo game venture by Rendlike and published by Joystick Ventures. You’re a spacefaring clumsy foxy fixer-upper named Vix who is accompanied by her toolbox Tin, and you’re pulled into one last job to prove you’ve got the repairing chops to keep your job. Unfortunately, you crash land on a planet in a system that looks down on tools and fixing, and will police your attempts to solve the various planets’ problems, unless you distract them with a radio broadcast. Over the course of trying to escape the planet’s various communication and humanitarian problems, you discover a story of humanity’s past and its innate problems in the present. FixFox had a vibe & story that pulled me in and kept me engaged with its many twists and turns, and so many little unique details.

Star Wars Bounty Hunter (Xbox) Review

Mon 12 Aug 2024 - 13:45

I’m gonna start this review with a hot-take: I don’t think Episode II: Attack Of The Clones is a bad Star Wars movie. In fact, out of all three prequels, it’s actually my favorite of the three films. Yes, some parts do drag but they weren’t enough to soil my enjoyment of the movie. I loved how it expanded on Coruscant in the beginning (Yes, I liked the diner scene and, yes, I’m OK with something like that existing in Star Wars) and the entire Geonosis battle sequence is a visual spectacle of sheer beauty. However, I never played any of the games based on Episode II growing up as they were on systems I didn’t own, like the Gamecube and Xbox as I still had a N64. Thankfully, thanks to the folks over at Aspyr, one of the games I missed out on has got a second chance at life with the remastering of 2002’s ‘Star Wars Bounty Hunter’ and, I gotta say, this game is a mixed bag.

Palworld Review

Sun 11 Aug 2024 - 12:03

Wow I sure have a lot of hours on survival games, I also really like creature collecting games. Wouldn’t it be awesome if I enslaved a ton of creatures and forced them to work in the mines and fight with you to capture and enslave even more creatures could find a bunch of cool pals to hang out with while playing a survival game? Seriously though, Palworld takes the best from both survival and creature capture games, plus GUNS, you almost never get guns in creature capture games. In Palworld, you can turn your pals into guns!

BioGun Review

Fri 9 Aug 2024 - 10:47

Metroidvanias can be a dime a dozen in the gaming world. Similar to roguelikes, they’re a popular genre amongst indie developers. When looking at these types of games, there needs to be a creative “hook” or new spin in setting or design that grabs your attention and shows you, “Hey, this is something worth checking out!” BioGun manages to do this right at the forefront with a game completely played from inside of your best friend. You explore the many body organs as a gun-wielding vaccine injected into your dog to fight the catastrophic “dooper” virus that has duped scientists around the globe as it wreaks havoc on pets. Along the way you’ll meet up and be helped (or hunted) by a vast array of cute, cool, and corrupted characters, most of which have an anthro spin on them, if they’re not viruses or enemies plaguing your dog. All of this in pursuit of eradicating the Dooper virus once and for all.

The Age of Rats: An Age of Wonders 4 Tale

Wed 7 Aug 2024 - 20:19

The forests of this realm were quiet, and an unsettling chill always lingered in the air. Though we channeled the Tome of Glades to camouflage our race with fur and our uncanny ability to traverse the woods gracefully, the land was hostile with an unrelenting sense of wrongness. Our magic changed barren spaces to something livable, but death wasn’t just an intangible thing here, it claimed this world and the beasts in them.
