A message from the board of Antheria.

Thu 23 Sep 2010 - 19:41
"From the staff of Antheria... Dear members, We have good news and bad news. First, the bad news. Antheria's contract with the Westin Hotel LAX has been canceled unavoidably. We regret having to leave such a fine hotel before it was even discovered by our members. If you're already a member of Antheria, you might be asking yourself questions such as, "Is the convention canceled? What about my reservations?" This is where the good news comes in. The Antheria staff has worked hard to resolve these problems and have secured a new hotel for the weekend! And, unlike the Westin,

First-Ever Baby Snow Leopard Filmed in Wild

Thu 23 Sep 2010 - 19:41
"Curiosity, fortunately, didn't kill this cat, but it did bring a young endangered feline right up to a BBC camera trap in the mountains of Bhutan, allowing the news network to film what is likely the first-ever footage of a baby snow leopard -- the "highest living of all big cats and ... among the most rare and elusive of all animals," according to the BBC -- in the wild."

Locks of Love helps disadvantage children suffering from medical hair loss

Fri 17 Sep 2010 - 18:25
"Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and th

Sad news about Ben Hurst

Wed 8 Sep 2010 - 23:45
"This isn't easy to say right now because we were so close, but I want to get the word out ala one of his last requests should this ever happen. Today I got a phone call from Pat Allee. Ben passed away a couple weeks ago. They think it was his diabetes, which I didn't even know he had. I guess it came kind of suddenly. He even had a doctor appointment on Wednesday but he died Tuesday before he could go. What they believe happened is that he fainted and then went into a diabetic coma. Then he just died peacefully in his sleep, which is how he wanted to go. He didn't feel any pain or an

Shelter Stories

Tue 7 Sep 2010 - 10:12
"Speaking of animator Paul Fierlinger (as we did yesterday), The Animal Shelter Project and the Humane Society have brought Fierlinger together with cartoonist Patrick McDonnell (Mutts) to create six public service spots based on the book Mutts Shelter Stories. According to producer Peter Barg, "McDonnell felt Paul's ability to capture true-to-nature body language was the perfect complement to his famous Mutts characters". Fierlinger's feature My Dog Tulip, opens in NYC at Film Forum on September 1st and in LA at the Nuart on October 22nd. You can watch all six spots online at Z Animation

This is it!

Tue 7 Sep 2010 - 10:12
"For the last ten years of my life, I've dedicated myself to entertaining people. Other than jerking off, I've never done ANYTHING for ten years. I've had no jobs, hobbies, relationships, houses or even opinions that have lasted for ten years or more. Yet, when I began entertaining, time seemed to have no meaning any more. As long as there was at least a handful of people out there I was somehow helping to cheer up, laugh or think, I had my reason to continue. You guys have kept me going for an entire decade now, and I don't regret a moment of it. I've been amazed at the support my f

BOOM! and Ian Brill Retrieve CHIP 'N DALE RESCUE RANGERS

Mon 6 Sep 2010 - 16:33
"The theme song is still indelibly etched in the minds of late ‘80s and early ‘90s kids raised on a steady diet of the Disney Afternoon. Ch-ch-ch-chip and Dale. Rescue Rangers. Debuting in 1989, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers re-imagined Disney's long-running chipmunk troublemakers as a detective duo, joined by a couple of mice - cheese-loving adventurer Monterey Jack and spunky inventor Gadget - and a surprisingly helpful housefly named Zipper. The show was one of Disney's many syndicated animated hits of that era; running for 65 episodes, spawning a couple of NES games and getting 19 iss

A new theory about prehistoric animal domestication

Sun 5 Sep 2010 - 22:38
"No other mammal routinely adopts other species in the wild - no gazelles take in baby cheetahs, no mountain lions raise baby deer... Every mouthful you feed to another species is one that your own children do not eat. On the face of it, caring for another species is maladaptive, so why do we humans do this?"

The Jeremiads: Why the Geek Hierarchy Has to Go

Tue 31 Aug 2010 - 00:32
"A few years ago, Lore Sjöberg, famous internet humorist, put into flowchart form what has been subconsciously understood among geek culture for as long as I've been a geek. There is an implicit hierarchy of respect among the geek tribes. Producers of paid, commercial content sit at the top of the cultural hierarchy and command respect far and wide. Furries, child gamers, and fan fiction writers rank at the bottom, with some combination of all of the above being the ultimate untouchable caste, and don't command respect from much of anyone. Somewhere in the middle are fans of various geek hob
