crossaffliction's stories

ApplejackI realized last week, when Hasbro thought it was a good idea to release a movie based on Battleship, that I will probably be reviewing a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic movie within the next couple of years. At least that is a Hasbro property people actually want a movie of.

In preparation, I decided to sit down with the first season of said Hasbro property. Finally, I feel I understand where these “bronies” are coming from.

It involves cats, but first ...

Now seems like a good time to do the “we got snubbed at the Academy Awards” article that every niche-genre news-and-review site must run at least once a year by law. Okay, so it's not exactly forging ahead into 2012, but not much is happening.

Just want to point out that, according to Equivamp, I might have won the Internet last month.

We are at a weird point right now; since the Ursa Majors will not be announced for another couple of months, we cannot just let 2011 slide. At the same time, 2012 is almost a quarter done, so it seems a bit stupid to keep hanging on to the past year.

There are in fact a couple of things left unsaid from 2011 that are still worth saying, so this will be the final round up of 2011 ramblings before I start plugging away at 2012.

So this is the last Newsbyte archive I’m doing. It’s just more work than I want to do right now, so if someone else wants to do it, have at it.

[Ed: The submitter was later apprehended heading for FNN headquarters. Don't get your hopes up for April, though; I've always wanted one of those fur zombies . . .]

Unity Book I: AscentI usually do not like furry science fiction.

My problem is that furries tend to start with furry, and add the science fiction later. The visual of a walking, talking fox/cat/rabbit/whatever is introduced in the mind of the furry author, and an explanation is cobbled together as an afterthought. To call this a disservice to science fiction is an understatement.

The comic strip Unity written by fluffy (the author is dedicated to the pseudonym, even putting it on the spine of this collection of the first major storyline), is a rare example where the science fiction does not suffer as a consequence of the furry aspects of the piece.

Puss In Boots FYCThe nominees for the Ursa Majors are here, and if you are reading this, I expect you to have already voted for at least the category this column is about. You really already should have seen at least four of the five movie nominees, as they are readily available from wherever you happen to rent movies, and most rentals nowadays cost fewer than two bucks, so seriously, what’s your excuse?

If you haven’t watched them yet, go. Watch them. Now. This article will be waiting for you when you return.

Here’s last month’s Newsbytes.

rangofyc.jpg The Annies are done and the Oscars were last Sunday. Rango inevitably won Best Animated Feature, so there is really not much reason to go on about it. Meanwhile, the Ursa Major nominees will be announced next month, so guess what next month’s column will be about.

For now, however, we might as well begin the process all over again; that’s right, I’m going to call next year’s Oscars and Annies right now!

I mean, everyone knows it’s going to be Brave, anyway.

annie-award.jpgAt the 39th Annual Annie Awards, movies featuring anthropomorphic animal characters took many top awards.

Rango was the big winner, with four awards, including Best Animated Feature. The movie with the most nominations, Kung Fu Panda 2, only won two, but one of them was Best Director for first time theatrical director Jennifer Yuh Nelson.

Other such movies with wins include Rise of the Planet of the Apes, winning Character Animation (in a Live Action Feature), Winnie the Pooh, which won Storyboarding, and Rio, for Character Animation (in an Animated Feature).
