C-ACE

C-ACE (the Canadian Art and Cartooning Expo, held in Ottawa) has come to a close for its sixth - and apparently final - year. Guests included artist/costumer Andrew "Loopy" Pidcock and fantasy author Fiona Patton.

The main reasons cited for the closure were increased hotel operating costs and the lack of medium-sized facilities.[1]

On the evening of Monday, June 4, 2007, KO, the chairman of Rocket City FurMeet was helping a friend move a washer on some stairs. The washer tipped over and fell, taking KO with it,[1] breaking both of his wrists and his scapula. As of this writing, he is at Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, Alabama having undergone surgery to repair some of the damage.[2]

It is unclear how much of KO's medical care will be covered by insurance, and he will definitely be out of work while he recuperates. To help bridge the gap, Alexander Katz is collecting donations via PayPal. Alexander is also inviting comments and get-well wishes to pass along to KO.[3]

The date of the sequel to Thomas K. Dye's humorously satirical webcomic Newshounds has been announced. Newshounds II will start on 2 July, 2007.[1]

The new series will continue from where the first Newshounds left off, with KPET manager Lorna Dilbrook taking the post of head news editor of MegaNewsWest, on the condition the her old staff at KPET were also given jobs.

Since Newshounds ended on December 8,[2] Dye has been running a commentary on old strips, as well as making a spin-off featuring the cubs of Wolfram Blitzen and Rochelle O'Shea, Malcolm and Emma, in a strip called Kid Gloves since January 30.[3] The last Kid Gloves will be published on June 29, with Newshounds II taking over.[1]

The original Newshounds ran from November 1997, and was published in seven compilations.

Softpaw #1 - Cute, but not innocent

There's a new furry fanzine making the rounds. You probably won't see it on the shelves of your local comic book store, though, or in any public library, since its prime attraction is pornographic cub art and stories.

Softpaw Magazine #1 was published in November of last year,[1] joining the catalog of furry dealer Rabbit Valley this February.[2]

The magazine's retail price is $20—distinctly higher than smaller, black and white furry comics which usually sell for less than $5. Conversely, Softpaw's format is 8.5" x 11" with between 64-80 pages in full colour.

Softpaw editors Jery and Kiffin maintain that the magazine — mailed in unmarked plain envelopes — is entirely legal:

" Softpaw Magazine contains ... young looking characters who are entirely fictional and are over the age of 18. There's nothing wrong about publishing a magazine like that.[3] (see update) "

Pouchhopper and Rainhopper's reception

The late artist, fursuit designer and plush toy maker Pouchhopper will be leaving a legacy behind him. His husband Rainhopper is collecting funds to make a trip to spread Pouchhopper's ashes in the Australian outback, thanks to some very generous donations, all funds raised shall be donated to a local kangaroo sanctuary in his memory.[1]

Pouchhopper was a long-time member of the furry fandom, providing funding for ConFurence 0, and presenting several convention panels on fursuit construction and design. In recent years he suffered from cancer, resulting in scoliosis, though he remained dedicated to fandom activities. He died in his sleep at his home on May 6, aged 38.[2]

The collection was launched on May 13. Over $1600 has been raised in the first week of donations.[3][4]

Further Confusion's attendance has almost doubled in the last five years

Bay Area convention Further Confusion is learning the price of success. Over 2000 fans attended in 2007, and organizers estimate that the current venue, the San Jose DoubleTree hotel, can only hold 2200-2300 - a number likely to be reached in next year's tenth anniversary.[1][2] Indeed, the hotel has already sold out of suites, executive-level, and accessible rooms.[3]

Further Confusion will return to the DoubleTree in 2008, but is seriously considering a larger host for future years. Advantages could include increased space for events, dealer's room and art show, nicer accommodation, and more dining options. However, several issues have been raised, including the likelihood of higher room rates and ancillary costs, and the need to choose a less convenient date.[4]

AAE board members have released a survey to help determine the convention's future fate, closing May 31st.

OzFurry YiffChart promotional graphic

Tursiae has created a chart of sexual activity, past and present, within the Australian furry community.[1]

The OzFurry YiffChart was first announced on Tursiae's LiveJournal late last month,[2] and promoted on FurNet IRC channel #ozfurs. Individuals were invited to submit lists of prior relationships under terms of confidentiality.

Recent updates have resulted in charted individuals being coloured by state, except for those residing in low-population states which might cause them to be identifiable.
