All-ages furry art gallery ArtSpots may extend its ratings to include a level allowing "tasteful nudity", according to site leader Higgins Dragon.

The issue is a touchy one, as many artists use the site as a secondary "professional gallery" to show to family and co-workers. However, users appear to favour the idea, as long as it is restricted to those with companion status - a measure of drawing skill.

Also under consideration is a forum-based process of awarding this status, and that of the guild master, which is intended to focus on more subjective traits like colour and composition.

The debate began when users highlighted an inability to filter out sexually suggestive artwork without dropping to PG. Some expressed concern that content was pushing the PG-13 rating. Like its predecessor Yerf, ArtSpots has suffered from limited volunteer time, resulting in a slowdown in reviews and a delay before removal of reported images.

Best Magazine nominee Softpaw #4 would be excluded today [Papaya Kitty]

Nominations have begun for the 2009 Ursa Major Awards, furry fandom's popular award for excellence in published works. But new rules intended to safeguard the reputation of the Awards and its sponsoring events will exclude works which won nomination in previous years.

While nominees and winners will still be chosen by popular vote, the Anthropomorphic Literature and Arts Association intends to block material they deem "obscene, libelous, or otherwise detrimental to the integrity and good standing of the Ursa Major Awards and the anthropomorphics fandom."

Their definition includes "works of a predominantly sexual nature, or which include explicit sexual situations involving characters which may be underage or non-anthropomorphic animals."

A four-year-old otter named Mo from Slimbridge Wetland Centre in Gloucestershire has started to climb trees. Mammal Manager John Crooks believes the behaviour may be a reaction to overcrowding from her younger sisters and seven-year-old mother Flo.

Mo began climbing at Christmas, and has ventured progressively higher over the past month. While the activity is not completely unheard of among otters, it has not been seen before at Slimbridge. [story tip: Kenoscope]

2009 Wildlife Photographer of the Year Jose Luis Rodriguez has been stripped of his award, after evidence surfaced that his chosen subject was not a wild animal.

Rodriguez made the headlines when his image of a wolf jumping over a frosty gate snatched the award from a strong field of competitors.

Judges now believe the photograph depicts Ossian, a tame wolf living at the Cañada Real Center near Madrid. The use of undeclared models is prohibited by the competition rules.

Rodriguez maintains his innocence, but has been banned from the competition for life. He is also to lose the £10,000 winner's prize, while keeping £500 in lieu of royalties.

A team of 18 working for the Supreme Council of Antiquities have discovered the ruins of a temple believed to be dedicated to the cat-god Bastet, according to Head of Antiquities Dr. Mohamed Abdel Maqsoud. Its presence suggests the continuing worship of the feline deity after the decline of ancient Egypt.

The temple belonged to Queen Berenice II; wife to Ptolemy III, who reigned 246–222 BCE and erected the Stone of Canopus - the first in the bilingual Rosetta stone series.

Initially depicted as a leonine, male figure, the being once known as Bast had, by this time acquired a more domestic, feminine persona nicknamed the perfumed protector; a suitable choice for a queen. However, the cat-god ultimately failed to prevent Berenice's son from murdering his mother and marrying his sister.

Midwest Furry Fandom added $10000 to the $5193 raised for Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation by Midwest FurFest 2007 attendees

Furry philanthropy took a step back in 2009, as donations fell 15% in a tough economic climate. However, the fandom still has something to be proud of: $490,000 raised for charity at furry conventions in the past decade.

Over $112,000 was donated by Further Confusion, with Midwest FurFest ($92,000), Anthrocon ($87,000) and Mephit FurMeet ($71,000) not far behind — not counting MFM's donations to victims of Hurricane Katrina.

At first, the top three events covered the majority of annual donations, but now others give more than half of it. And while most money still comes from North America, international furs are joining in, including cons in the UK, Germany, Australia, Poland and the Czech Republic.

Read on for a chart detailing the decade's charitable donations.
Update (24 May): Includes figures for RCFM 2007-9, WPAFW 2009, ConFuzzled 2008-9 and Conifur '01, '03, '04.
