BBC's Watership Down trailer released

On December 22, 2018, Netflix and BBC One will see the second animated adaptation of the 1972 Richard Adams novel Watership Down. This time, it's a four-part miniseries of one-hour episodes.

Unlike the 1978 animated film's trailer, which focused on the story as a philosophical, epic fantasy, this new trailer has more the feel of a modern action drama.

Actually, wouldn't this be the third adaptation? I'm thinking of the British/Canadian TV series that ran from the late 90's into the early 00's. Although I never saw that show for myself the content of it seemed to be a bit tamed down for a younger generation than the original novel was targeted to.

The rabbits look great here in the trailer above, but their movements seem a bit stiff (noticeable most when running). Looking forward to seeing this regardless, as WD is one of my favorite books.

As someone who has seen the TV series, I can say that yes, it is toned down a bit from the books and movies. Not a lot, as they do still have predators and Efrafa and Cowslip's Warren around, but most of the characters take themselves less seriously, and some of the episodes are just plain silly (in particular the one where the rabbits visit Keehar's home by the sea). There was an attempt to make it darker in the third season, which I personally liked, but I've seen some people despise it over the redrawn character designs and one particular subplot that turned into a deus ex machina at the end.

As far as the trailer goes, I think "action movie" is the just standard trailer-edit these days, though I sincerely hope that's generic trailer music instead of the actual miniseries music. Still, can't wait to see it.

Thanks for the correction. You're right. I've actually never heard of that show so that means I have two bunny shows to check out now.

The Independent's reviewer isn't a fan, picking out animation as an issue, but also fundamental watering-down of the tone. In fairness, Mass Effect: Andromeda was 2-3x the budget and the animation was still janky in places. Then again, it was a game too.

Of course, the BBC is trying to spin its 'toned-down' version as a good thing. Nice quote at the end: it's "a story about rabbits".

I've noticed that lately CGI filmmakers have been failing to animate eyes, and it looks like its particularly bad here; the WD rabbits look taxidermied, with plastic replacement eyes.

At least they don't look like they're about to pop out of their heads like Dumbo's (not really that much of a positive).

Ah look, yet another movie for furries to fap to, while waiting for a Zootopia sequel

If you want to pretend that furries unanimously loved Zootopia, you might want to do so on an article written by someone else.

Also, this is a web series, not a movie. Learn2read

How about that? Another dreary, low production value Netflix series that takes itself way too seriously.

Because ruining She-Ra wasn't enough.
