The 'Tanicloth', a tablecloth drawn on my German artist TaniDeReal, sold at ConFuzzled for £2000

In 2008, the British furry convention ConFuzzled raised £1,600 for charity. In 2009, ConFuzzled raised £2,000 for charity. Today – less than an hour ago – ConFuzzled smashed that record with only one item.

The item, a tablecloth with artwork by guest of honour TaniDaReal had a starting bid of £50, which quickly exploded into the hundreds and then the thousands. In a bidding war that lasted several minutes between staff member Colifox and American furry fan Beshon, the bids finally jumped from £1,800 to £2,000 and ConFuzzled history was made for the largest bid paid for any item in an auction.

As the days count down until the general election on May 6th, Parliament is now starting to push through the final pieces of legislation for the current government. While many people have been focusing on the Digital Economy Bill, Parliament yesterday quietly passed legislation that may effect furries more than any other.

The Cartoon Law has made it illegal to create or possess imagery of minors (characters under-18 years of age), without discretion to species or the manner in which that imagery has been created. In furry terms, artwork of characters under-18 - be them engaging in a sexual act or having exposed genitalia - are henceforth illegal. This also includes imagery of sexual acts occurring in the presence of a minor.

It doesn't just affect furries however, lolicon (a form of hentai depicting children) is also made illegal under the new law.

BBC News, one of the most trusted news providers in the world has written an article describing the furry fandom in it's 'Magazine' mini-site.

The article, published today, aims to describe the furry fandom to a largely unaware public following the conviction of Christopher Monks and Shaun Skarnes earlier this year.

The article, similar to an earlier BBC effort, Anna in Wonderland: The Furries, has been seen as a fair and unbiased description of the fandom. It features quotes from a number of furries including TaniDaReal and FurteanTimes' own TheChainedWolf.

Update (November 13, 2009): noodleshusky's original article expanded by AlexGrey.

Comic #629 of xkcd, by Randall Munroe, documenting the rise of the "skin" community within the furry fandom (CC-BY-NC)

The furry fandom yesterday made it's fourth appearance in webcomic xkcd, made by ex-NASA contractor Randall Munroe, it is a veritable mix of geekish humour – so obviously, furries would appear often.

What we didn't know, however, was that strange sect of furries who have animal fursonae which then pretend to be human, or the "Skin" community, as it's so called.

The comic's alt text (a device for adding author commentary to a strip) reads: "There's Livejournal drama between those who want to wear human suits over fursuits and those who just take off the fursuits.

Furry encyclopaedia WikiFur has completed plans to move away from host Wikia following over a year of planning.

GreenReaper, the founder and owner of WikiFur, has today began migrating all articles, data and user accounts from the English WikiFur across to the WikiFur.com server, which already hosts WikiFur in 12 other languages.

The move is purported to be to escape from Wikia's somewhat tyrannical rule over the wiki's it hosts, imposing large amounts of advertising and stylistic control, as well as controvertial behaviour concerning the control of domain names.

Troubled furry portal FurNation has come back online, following a campaign to save it from huge operating debts.

A statement was sent yesterday to FurNation members stating:

We have worked out an agreement that will allow FN to stay online. The service is being transfered to the Furry Community as a whole, and will be run and operated as a group effort with voting for the CEO and board of directors like any convention or small public business would be run. Basically, this will be the first web service to be fully owned and operated by the fandom! We will have more details this week as we work out all the plans and create the TOS and Charter for the new FurNation! Please stay tuned.

However, gallery sections of the website remain offline for the time being. Hosting services are due to change soon.
