Strange Horizons has a review by Elizabeth Barrette of two interactive, fictional diaries. Both happen to be hosted on LiveJournal, and both happen to be of interest to fans of anthropormorphics. You can check out the two journals--Sythry's Journal and Flight of the Godkin Griffin--and read the review.

A little late (my fault), here's Treesong's monthly addition to the Upcoming Comics list.

Tue 8 Jun 2004 - 07:44

The winners of the third annual Ursa Major Awards (formally the Annual Anthropomorphic Literature & Arts Awards), for the Best in
anthropomorphic/"funny animal" literature and art first published during the calendar year 2003, were announced at a presentation ceremony on Saturday, June 5 at the Canadian Anthro & Cartooning Expo (C-ACE) 2004, held at the Chimo Hotel in Ottawa, Ontario on June 4 - 6, 2004.

Furry comics fans, get your orders in for August, now! Here's your monthly update from Doodles: "August is the dog days of summer, so make sure you all have on flea collars:"

Mon 3 May 2004 - 19:39

From Treesong: "The premier Usenet comics awards are the Squiddies. Furry comics fans, give furdom a little added recognition by voting in them. The current ballot has been posted to the main rec.arts.comics.* newsgroups, as has the third and final 'pseudo-nominees' ballot (showing everything and everyone that anyone's voted for so far)."

Combined the updates from Doodles and Treesong this month. From Doodles: "This is the big month, with ComicCon International taking place in the middle, and so the publishers pull out all the stops to get new titles available. The bigger pubs also like to do listings of all their backstock, a hint of which can be found in the gaps between a mess of these listings. In addition, the industry has moved their Free Comic Book Day to July 3, so you'll be able to pick up all kinds of goodies from your local store. (Personal recommendation: grab Gemstone Publishing's "Mickey Mouse and Friends" freebie.)"

From Doodles: "For those of you unfamiliar with who Kate Worley is, she's one half of the team that brought "Omaha The Cat Dancer" to life, an act which brought _me_ into this fandom. So you can imagine how much of a debt I owe her and Reed Waller.

This is all being cross-posted from the Cat-Dancing-with-OMAHA Yahoo Group with permission, and I'll let Reed and Kate say most of it. First, Reed posted this on 4/21/04:

The news is not good. After a short period of stability, just long enough for her to start getting some strength back and think about writing, Kate's cancer has flared up again. She is back in rad and chemo as of today, and more treatments. This despite the increased risks of repeated radiation to the spinal column, but there's really no choice."

Early this morning, Flayrah.com was hacked by by person or persons uknown. The hack consisted of a news article posted under my name, and some minor defacement of the site. I do not know if any further damage was caused. If you notice anything further out of the ordianary, please email me. I will shortly be updating Flayrah.com's codebase to the latest release of PostNuke; this will hopefully plug any security holes that the hacker may have used. Thanks for your patience.

Chistopher Bair, proprieter of the PlanetFur website has posted a criticism of the Ursa Major Awards:

"The 2003 Ursa Major Award nominees are out. And 2003 really shows off why these awards are never taken seriously. Nevermind that they're just a website promotion for the future awards (you really see any of the winners putting "Ursa Major Award Winning _blank_" on their publications?), but I'd be surprised if anyone really showed up to the award ceremonies.

Let's point out the big problems, shall we? I've already made a declaration for new categories to make these even remotely worthwhile for the Furry Fandom. The current UM awards present awards (last I checked, just a framed "WINNER" item, no statues, no plaques, nothing that anyone really would want to hang on a wall or put on a shelf) for Best Anthropomorphic Motion Picture, TV Series, Novel, Short Story, Other Literary Work, Comic Book, Comic Strip, Fanzine, Published Illustration and Game."

Again, from Doodles: "Spring is here for most of us, but for the comics dealers, it's already Summer. This is the month that a lot of material will be coming out this June, in hopes of making it to this year's con season. Lots of specials, one-shots, new series, and marketing nightmares. Let's try some, shall we?"
