Pets and their owners can breathe easier in the city of Windsor, and county of Essex, Ontario, as the Essex County Veterinary Association donated ten animal-friendly oxygen mask sets to the various fire departments in Windsor and the county on March 21.

The sets (which contain three pet masks, three sets of tubes, and a bag to carry them in) cost around CA$150 each.

I know this sounds hilarious, but in all seriousness, this is a nasty form of animal cruelty: duct-taping a little box turtle to some balloons, and then letting it go, to float who knows HOW high in the atmosphere. Thankfully, it was snagged a few feet off the ground by a eucalyptus tree in the San Diego suburb of Oceanside, California.

Local resident Chanelle Wright saw the trapped terrapin's balloons in the tree. She said she immediately contacted the Humane Society, and the local fire department, but it took them over an hour to respond. Just as the fire department's ladder truck moved its ladder into position, a big gust of wind blew the turtle free, allowing him to gently float back down to terra firma.

While neighbours initially told local television station KGTV that Wright and her family had perpetrated the turtle's airborne adventure, understandably upsetting and angering Wright, they later recanted their stories and apologized.

Local authorities are still looking for whoever is responsible. The turtle is currently resting up in the protective custody of the San Diego Humane Society, and will soon be up for adoption. Wright has stated that if no one adopts the little reptile, she will.

This is becoming unbearable...

A bear has been implicated in the discovery of human remains on a remote logging road in British Columbia. The body has been positively-identified as convicted murderer Rory Nelson Wagner (aged 53, of Kamloops, BC). It is currently unknown what the cause of death was, but the BC Coroner has ruled out suicide.

Hunters first came across the remains after discovering Wagner's abandoned Volkswagen Jetta sedan on the road, and later discovered his buried and partially-consumed body.

Astral Media and Corus Entertainment (owners of Teletoon/Télétoon), have signed a deal to license the name and programming of Cartoon Network from Time Warner. In a press release dated February 2, Astral and Corus say that Cartoon Network Canada will arrive as a sister network to the currently-operating Teletoon/Télétoon networks, and that the popular Adult Swim program block will air alongside Cartoon Network programming on Cartoon Network Canada. Currently, only some of Adult Swim's programs are aired on Teletoon's "Teletoon at Night" (formerly "The Detour").

While a concrete launch date has not been announced, Astral Media says the network will air sometime in the "Summer of 2012", while Corus Entertainment has hinted that it will launch on October 1, the 20th anniversary of the original American Cartoon Network channel.
