The Jokka, tri-sexed scaley aliens, made their debut in stories at Strange Horizons, where they made the Tiptree Award's secondary reading list, won a Reader's Choice award and became a finalist for the 2003 Spectrum Awards. And now at last they return in their first full-length novel, The Worth of a Shell. You can read an excerpt, see art, and buy physical or electronic copies at the website.

Damon Knight, SF Grand Master, died yesterday in a hospital in Eugene, Oregon. Among his many accomplishments, Knight wrote "To Serve Man" (the short story immortalized by the Twilight Zone episode), started the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writer's Association, and wrote a book about writing that still sits on my shelf today, Creating Short Fiction.

To collect money for the Red Cross for the victims of the September 11th attacks, a large number of original paintings will be auctioned on eBay starting September 23rd. Lots of big names in this list; Michael Whelan, Keith Parkinson, Larry Elmore, Tony DiTerlizzi, etc. Check out the web page for "Illustrations of Hope" for more info.

The BBC's weekly feature recently highlighted the weather detecting abilities of gulls, terns and other seabirds. Since they like good strong winds to make their flights, they are extremely sensitive to the weather. Good reading and some pictures to boot.

This site is good for getting information on the survivors, and how you can help: wtc.toto.com. Also, you can donate money to the Red Cross through Amazon; they keep no part of the proceeds: ttp://www.amazon.com/paypage/PKAXFNQH7EKCX.

There's no definite person to pin the terrorist attacks on. The twin towers of the World Trade Center and a nearby building have collapsed. The Pentagon is damaged. A fourth hijacked plane crashed near Pittsburg. The Pittsburg crash is thought to have been related to a possible attempt on Camp David. Five warships have been deployed to guard the east coast of America, and two aircraft carriers have been dispatched to New York. All air-traffic is grounded

There is much call for both blood donations and monetary. Phone numbers to call for information about giving either:

1-800-HELP-NOW (money)

1-800-GIV-LIFE (blood)

OR 1-888-BLOOD-88

I just think this is the coolest stuff. If I didn't already have a similar dragon made of clay and fur, I'd seriously consider buying one of Caligan's Creations. Totally bendable dragonets in satin and metallic cloths. You can commission one in your favorite colors or buy one that comes up for auction.

Salon is running an excellent interview with Ray Bradbury today, author of The Martian Chronicles, Fahrenheit 451 and scores of other novels and short stories. The man is 81, recovering from a stroke, and still incredibly coherent. He reminds me of what I thought when I saw Frank Kelly Freas on a panel at last year's Worldcon: if you're in love with what you do, you stay present.

A recent Salon article relates how biological researchers are using radio transmitters and satellites to track the exact movements of animals like caribou and bald eagles.

Lycos hosts a useful site for people concerned about the environment: ENS, the Environment News Service. Here you can catch up on daily news about the environment, everything from information on the antarctic winds being harnessed for power to possible oil drilling near the Great Barrier Reef. The only annoying thing about this site is that right-clicking on the links will get you an amazing pop-up box about the article being copyrighted. Some of us aren't trying to steal, you know, just trying to avoid evil-nasty frames.

The sea harbors strange creatures, among them the brittlestar. According to this New Scientist article, brittlestars can 'see' through their arms because of microscopic lens in their skeletons. Since I had no idea what a brittlestar looked like, I went hunting and found this photo of an orange-red brittlestar and a second, striking photograph of a spiny brittlestar. Since this is the Internet, my search also brought up a site where you can buy fossils of echinoderms online, including (naturally) brittlestars.
