Treesong's stories

The best news this month is that Carla Speed McNeil has moved to Dark Horse so she can spend more time creating and less publishing, and if you are not rejoicing you don't know what you're missing.

Now that the Warner Brothers comics aren't being done by huge committees, the practice has moved to the Arch* companies. For better or worse, I can't say. Also there's a huge selection of non-pamphlet items this month, including three huge pricey bargains from Fantagraphics that I'd go for if I didn't have everything already. If you rely mainly on a standard pull list at your comic shop, you need to read this month's selections.

This is another good month for furry stuff beyond the usual periodical pamphlets. The Saga of Rex is the standout but there’s plenty more, including a couple of interesting comic strip collections.

Quite a bit of furry stirred in among the zombie comics, with new items as varied as Duncan the Wonder Dog, Dungeon Monstres vol. 3, and the Sonic Encyclopedia.

As I mentioned in a similar report a couple of years ago, I consider myself a fringefur because I don't do things that more committed furries do (writing, art, fursuiting, taking on a fursona). Mostly I just like to read furry comics; most of my favorite Webcomics are furry, and I first got into the fandom when Fantagraphics stopped publishing Critters and I had to find another source. Text stories don't appeal so much, though I loved Michael Payne's Blood Jaguar, for instance, and I don't much care for movies or TV of any sort. I've never seen Disney's Robin Hood, which I gather is something of a furry gateway drug.

So why did I go to Anthrocon at all? Well, I'll tell ya.

Mostly the usual, with a bunch of juveniles I decided to include anyway. Also Fosgitt.

If you had asked me to name a comic book that would use the word 'ratiocination', I would not have picked Scooby-Doo. Nor would I have thought there would be so many zombies in one Previews. Surely this craze is past its sell-by date? No teenage zombie ninja turtles so far, though.

And Radio Comix is back! But will they stay? Also Flight #7 and some new titles.

Lots of interesting stuff this month, most of it on the pricey side. Lackadaisy, Krazy Kat, The Grasshopper and the Ant, Bone....

Sun 14 Mar 2010 - 20:31

This may be the biggest monthly pile of furry I've ever reported on. Can't say much of it grabs me, though. Have a look at Goats.

Last month, the latest Finder softcover; this month, the latest Girl Genius, sc & hc, and a Jim Woodring graphic novel. Life is good. Even if Pinocchio: Vampire Slayer is coming out too.
