Looks like Smokey Bear has some competition.

Oregon-based Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics (FSEEE) has introduced its new mascot, Reddy Squirrel. The rake-toting red squirrel was FSEEE's response to the U.S. Forest Service and Ad Council's recently revamped Smokey Bear fire-prevention campaign. To reflect increased dangers faced by homeowners living near forests, Smokey Bear's 58-year old motto has been changed to "Only you can prevent wildfires."

FSEEE maintains that since forest fires are not preventable, the Forest Service should emphasize how to prepare for the inevitable wildfires. Reddy's motto is "No one can prevent forest fires. Be ready!"

Reddy Squirrel will make her debut September 1 in Forest Magazine. Andy Stahl, executive director of FSEEE, said the Reddy Squirrel campaign will target people who live in or near forests, and the insurance companies that underwrite their homes. Although the group has only spent $25 on the character, a Web-based cartoon, television and radio spots, and packets of information for homeowners are also planned.

The Smithsonian's National Zoological Park announces the birth of a 325-pound male Asian elephant, born Nov. 25, at 2:35 p.m. The calf, which took his first steps just minutes after birth, is being watched carefully by zookeepers and veterinarians who were on hand for the birth. In addition, Dr. Dennis Schmitt, a specialist in elephant reproduction from the Southwestern Missouri State University, joined the National Zoo team for the birth.

Just in time for Halloween! Donnie Darko, a sci-fi/suspense movie starring Noah Wyle and Drew Barrymore. Set in the Reagan Era, it's about a disturbed 16-year old and his imaginary friend, a 6' tall bloody rabbit who, uh, tells him to do things. Yikes.

It sounds like Harvey (1950) gone horribly awry...

In theaters October 26. See http://www.donniedarko.com for previews and info.

Ruth and Rebecca Brown have 4,386 cats.

The identical twins from the Maple Glen section of Upper Dublin Township have fashioned thousands of tiny, detailed cats from clay.

They're not just ordinary kitties, either. They are cats in Confederate clothing. Union garb too, for that matter.

As Civil War buffs, the twins bring history to life by creating sweeping battle scenes and dioramas of dramatic moments, as interpreted with clay cats.
