It's not just development, it's moderation. Sites struggle to moderate journals and comments, and that's with furries spending most of their time on third-party social media. Could they handle the firehose of furry drama that is our segment of Twitter? Likewise, setting up a Mastodon server is achievable, but do you want to run one as a job? Because that's what it turns into.
