Can't say I'm too surprised that Rifkin is involved with what is ultimately an anti-genetics proposal. He's been the major advocate of the 'genetic engineering is interfereing with nature's will' idea since the 70's. The only thing he wants to do with gengineering is to stop it, all of it, period -- something he brags of in just about every book he's ever written.

I can remember reading his book 'Who Should Play God?' back in high school in which he described a horrid future where 'furries' are being made as slave soldiers and the overclass gengineers all of us into Brave New World style clone slaves. The guy is a major Luddite and a full-blown paranoid.
