Doubt it; probably more that it was on the front page at the wrong time. It's been relatively bad the last few months - for a while, I was blacklisting several IP ranges a day. We probably have around 2000 ranges and individual addresses blocked in total - and that's only one of our defences. It's no surprise that Flayrah's former incarnation was overrun by spam back in ~2005.
