This is likely linked to the impact of the widening income disparity and whole swaths of citizens are being left behind, which has created space for economic nationalism. Economic nationalism often leads to extremism. In this instance, people are blaming "the others" for their economic troubles. I mean look at the U.S., right wing extremism is on a massive upswing and we have the most protections on speech. So yea, I don't think your point is all that effective there.
