I went to the options settings and the items listed are as follows:
*Wii U Gamepad
*Wii U Pro Controller
*Classic Controller Pro
*Wiimote and Nunchuck
*"Special Control" (HORI)
Each of these is customizable to a point. You'll always have to use the D-Pad no matter which controller you are using. It' not analog compatible for some reason.
Certainly if you have a Pro/classic controller of any kind you may be able to skip out on the HORI (which as far as I'm aware is only compatible with this game currently?) By their layout they aren't too different then the HORI.
Except the Wii U Pro may have the d-pad and buttons too close with the shoulder buttons a bit further a way than the Classic. So if choosing between the Pro and Classic, the Classic may fair better.
This noting I own neither the Pro nor Classic, this is just based on the design and is a hypothesis based on button placement and the controll schema of the game.
