What's interesting to me is that they're kind of shifting characterization of Sonic closer to the old days, but still maintaining where they are at the same time. It's sort of a hybrid of sass and attitude pre-adventure era Sonic with the good nature and a bit more serious nature of the post-adventure era Sonic. This sort of mix I noticed in Sonic Colors cutscenes as well. I really do like that particular direction and hope it gets fleshed out more.
I mean the Sonic and Tails dynamic of sassing each other in Sonic Colors I really liked, and I think attests to the growth of Tails as a character who now doesn't hero worship Sonic (ala "I wanna fly") but instead has grown into a kind of a peer who can be just as quick on the feet and whit while maintaining his own identity. I do like the new style giving them their own aesthetics.
(As a side note And the VG Cat's reaction to these aesthetics was probably their funniest comic I've seen in awhile, especially how Scott jibe's himself at the end.)
