In the language of the pacific northwest Sauk-Suiattle Tribe, the name for mountain goat translates as "our-brother-the-color-of-snow." Now the 200-member tribe is fighting to save its brother from the brink of extinction.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that the Sauk-Suiattle tribe is using it's sovereignty rights to convene an emergency ad hoc committee of the U.S. Forest Service, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the National Park Service to work with the tribe to save the mountain goat.

Note that the North Cascades mountain goat is a native species. These are not the same goats that were introduced into the Olympic Mountain range last century which sometimes make the national news. Nor are the Cascade and Olympic Mountains connect.
