What Is Midwest Fur Fest?

Midwest Fur Fest is the largest furry convention in the world. They typically take place in Rosemont, Illinois, and are a completely non-profit organization. These conventions are hosted in attempts to facilitate and educate others on the ins and outs of anthropomorphic literature and general art. It also facilitates the donation of funds to other non-profit organizations, typically ones that promote the well-being of animals and/or humans. It was first held in the year 2000 and has since grown to be one of the highest-attendance furry conventions in the world.

It started as a furry branch of the science-fiction convention DucKon but this track grew larger and larger each year until it reached a point where over a third of the attendees of DucKon were there for their collective interest in the furry fandom. Keep in mind this was in 1999, before the explosion and wide accessibility of the internet that we have today means that the rapid growth of this convention was borderline inevitable. By 2000, DucKon was facing a serious dilemma and that was the fact that the furry interest of the convention was becoming so overwhelming that they were running out of room to expand without cutting into other branches of DucKon at which point it was decided that these furries had to form their own separate convention. This would eventually become what we know today as Midwest Fur Fest.

It has since helped raise over $767,000 for various charities including MCP Rescue + Outreach, Felines and Canines, Sitstayread, Crisp, and Save-A-Vet.

Article Content How Often Are They Hosted?

This is an annual convention that is typically hosted the second weekend after Thanksgiving. Although I am unsure of the reasoning for this, that just seems to be when the venue is. They have always been held in Illinois, most often in Rosemont, and have been hosted once a year, every year (apart from 2020 because of that whole COVID-19 thing that happened), since 2000.

What To Expect From Midwest Fur Fest

Now that we’ve gone through all of that, for those of you who have never been but are looking to attend, what should you actually expect from a Midwest Fur Fest? Well the event organizers themselves describe it as an opportunity to “celebrate the furry fandom which includes art, literature, and performances based around anthropomorphic animals” but I think they do themselves a disservice with this description as it’s a lot more than that.

Furries are often treated with a lot of hostility within wider internet culture so are often discouraged from disclosing the fact that they are furry making it kind of hard to meet other furries. Luckily a lot of these keyboard warriors don’t have enough hate in them to attend furry conventions making not just Midwest Fur Fest but furry conventions, in general, a safe space to meet new people and possibly even make new friends.

As well as this, if you’re into fursuiting, this is a great place to meet other fursuiters as if there was ever an opportunity to show off your best work, this is definitely the spot. Here you’ll see some of the most extravagant fursuits you’ll probably ever see anywhere and if you’re looking to make your own fursuit you may even be able to get some inspiration from this convention.

How To Prepare For Midwest Fur Fest

If you haven’t already read our article on the steps to take to prepare for Biggest Little Fur Con then it’s worth noting that a lot of the same rules apply when preparing for furry conventions in general. However, for those who haven’t read it, we will cover the brief do’s and don’ts of attending a furry convention.

  • Bring A Portable Charger: It’s bad enough that these conventions have notoriously bad reception, so, what would be even worse than having bad reception would be having no phone at all. Whether it’s to take pictures or if you need to phone someone in case of an emergency, it’s super important to have a working phone on you.

  • Try To Socialise: One of the best parts about attending furry conventions is that, as we mentioned before, you get to meet so many people interested in the same thing as you. In such a niche community, it’s hard to come by anywhere else and because of this, it’s important that you are ready to socialize with other people at the convention. We completely understand that it can be terribly nerve-racking to just go up to random people and strike up a conversation but when you get to know these people, you quickly realize how friendly everyone is and you might even forget that you were ever even nervous.

  • Be Aware Of How You Smell: This one might sound a little silly and it also feels a little taboo, but seriously, be aware of how you smell. It’s pretty easy to start sweating and inherently start smelling with the amount of walking around and the number of other people there. This especially goes for those of you who intend on wearing a fursuit as they can start to feel like an oven after a few hours and let me tell you now, smelling the combined BO of several thousand people is not pleasant at all.

Of course, there are other things you should be aware of and you should prepare for, but we feel like these are the three most integral parts of preparing for a furry convention as it just makes it a much more pleasant experience for everyone.

Midwest Fur Fest themselves explain that they offer a variety of programming and events for a wide spectrum of audiences. For the most part, the shows are appropriate for all ages, including all daylight hour events. However, beyond daylight hour events, there are events that may not be age appropriate and should therefore be double-checked beforehand if you intend on taking a child. Having said that, it should be made pretty clear when the event is or isn’t child-friendly anyway.

What About That 2014 Incident?

If you’ve read into Midwest Fur Fest at all then you may have heard about an incident in 2014 that would put a lot of people off the convention altogether. Essentially on December 7th, 2014, a gas leak occurred within the Hyatt hotel in Rosemont (the place the event was being hosted) which ended up hospitalizing 19 of the attendees and forcing the hotel to evacuate all other attendees. Further investigation was done on the gas leak only to find that there was a broken glass bottle containing a concentration of chlorine powder within the building meaning that this gas leak didn’t happen by chance and that someone intentionally did this. Hotels guests, employees, and employees of nearby shops that sold chlorine were interviewed to no avail and the culprit of this still remains unknown.

If this slightly puts you off attending at all it’s definitely worth noting that for one, that was the only time that something like that has ever happened in the 22 years that the event has been running. As well as this, all of the people who were hospitalized were able to return to the convention shortly following their hospitalization. In short, you shouldn’t really be afraid as it’s extremely unlikely something is going to happen.

How Much Are Tickets?

Now, we’re not going to lie, registration to Midwest Fur Fest can actually be pretty pricey. Registering can cost upwards of $50 which seems like a lot if you’ve never been to a furry convention before. However, if it’s any reconciliation, the money that you put towards tickets is what allows Midwest Fur Fest to fund charities such as the ones listed above. For example in 2019 Midwest Fur Fest raised a record-breaking $224,704 for the charity Felines & Canines. They are a rescue center for stray cats and dogs and without the ticket prices as high as they are, Midwest Fur Fest would not be able to fund the event and the charity so generously at the same time.

Are There Any Alternatives To Midwest Fur Fest?

Maybe, for some reason, you’ve been put off attending Midwest Fur Fest but you still want to attend and experience a furry convention. Whether it’s because of the price tag or the number of attendees, there are still plenty of other furry conventions out there that cater to your needs. So here is a list of alternatives to Midwest Fur Fest.

Biggest Little Fur Con: This is a convention that (as we mentioned before) we not too long ago wrote about, and with good reason. This isn’t one of the biggest conventions in the world but it’s just one that has received a lot of positive reception and is typically held in Reno Nevada around Halloween time. However, this one is a little less child-friendly than Midwest Fur Fest so keep that in mind when attending.

Anthrocon: This is probably the second biggest furry convention in the world next to Midwest Fur Fest but has actually (technically) been around longer than Midwest Fur Fest. It has been held every year since 1997 and has had a max attendance of over 9700 people. It doesn’t really offer anything that Midwest Fur Fest doesn’t, it’s just a bit quieter (but you probably won’t even notice it when you are there) and is typically located in Pittsburgh.

Furry Weekend Atlanta: As you could probably guess, this one is hosted annually in Atlanta and has been since 2004. Even in 2021 when they physically could not host the event, they held an online version of the event anyway. The highest attendance they have ever had was in 2022 when over 7000 people attended.

Furry Fiesta: This is the last entry on this short little list and is probably tied for the smallest on the list with Biggest Little Fur Con. Furry Fiesta started in 2009, and much like Midwest Fur Fest is non-profit and makes it its goal to raise as much money for charity as it possibly can. Their highest attendance was in 2019 in which they raised $29,429 for the CARE charity.

Of course, there are plenty of other conventions you can and should check out but these are the 5 biggest furry conventions out there.

  14. Where Can I Get A Fursuit Of My Own?
What Is A Fursuit?

A fursuit, as defined by Wikipedia, is a “custom-made animal costume, owned and worn by cosplayers and members of the furry fandom” (although I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone who isn’t a member of the furry fandom wearing a fursuit unironically). However, getting a fursuit goes a bit deeper than that. These costumes are usually modeled after what are known as fursonas which are anthropomorphic animal characters made by furries as a means of representing either themselves or another personality.

How Much Does A Fursuit Typically Cost?

It’s no secret that fursuits can be pretty expensive even at their cheapest. However, this doesn’t change the fact that they massively vary in prices regardless. This depends on quite a few things such as whether it’s a full fursuit or a partial fursuit, a digitigrade or plantigrade fursuit, and many other factors. On average, a full fursuit will cost upwards of $3000 but can go as high as $5000 – $6000 depending on the seller and the quality of the suit.

Why Are Fursuits So Expensive?

The average price of a fursuit may come as a shock to some but we’re here to assure you of two things. 1. trust us, they can get way more expensive (which we’ll show you in a second), and 2. Their cost is pretty justified. For one, these suits take a while to make and they’re not exactly the easiest pieces to make. The artist has to make a full body suit, accommodating the sizes and preferences of the customer as well as paying close attention to details such as the specific colors they want, how they want the tail stylized, what kind of eyes they want on the suit and so much more.

Additionally, these fursuits aren’t just a sacrifice of effort, they are also a sacrifice of time. Fursuit makers usually have schedules of multiple fursuits that they work tirelessly to complete all year round, meaning they are constantly working on some suit. Therefore, they are charging not only for the effort and skill it takes to make these fursuits well but also for how many hours if not days’ worth of work goes into them.

#10 Aero The Horse ($7,100)

Coming in at number 10 on our list is the Aero The Horse fursuit. As the name may suggest, this is a horse fursuit that sold in 2020 for over $7000. It was designed by the designer brand Sky Pro Costume and sold to buyer Deanna Biesemeyer after some back-and-forth bidding on the Dealer’s Den. As for the suit itself, it is a grey horse with hooves in place of hind paws and fluffy gloves for the front paws of the suit. It also comes with detachable bridles just as an extra bit of customization for the suit. This suit doesn’t look particularly special and its price likely boils down to being made by a designer fursuit brand but horse fursuits aren’t super common and it’s a pretty cool suit nonetheless

Level up your fursona with the help of our expert designers

"The artists had amazing response times and were constantly updating me on my piece" Clara Draw My Fursona #9 Mishka The Silver Fox ($10,100)

Made by fursuit maker HowlYeah!, this fursuit defines amazing craftsmanship. As the name implies, it is a fox fursuit that was made in 2016 that somehow just captures the very essence of a fox so perfectly with everything from its perky ears and its cunning little face, it’s no wonder that this suit would end up selling for $10,100 in September of that same year. The suit also features beautiful deep blue paw pads on the feet and hands that complement the black and grey color palette of the majority of the suit amazingly. As well as this, you can’t help but adore the little white teeth and tongue that only make you appreciate this artist’s attention to detail even more.

#8 Doberman Mutt ($10,200)

You might be surprised to see an animal as common as a dog making an appearance on this list, but you’d also be surprised by what people are willing to pay for a fursuit so here we are. The Doberman Mutt fursuit is a plantigrade fursuit made by renowned fursuit maker Mixedcandy who then sold said suit for $10,200. It features a dark brown fur coat with a light brown belly and a short stubby tail that is stitched right onto the back of the suit as opposed to most fursuit tails that usually have a detachable tail that can be pinned onto the suit. This is yet another entry that ended up selling on The Dealer’s Den as a lot of the entries on the list do.

#7 Sniper The Angel Dragon ($11,575)

This is a fursuit you may have actually seen given how popular it is, even having its own Facebook page dedicated to it. Created by fursuit maker Jay Negron, this suit kind of blurs a line between being a bird fursuit and a dragon fursuit. Features like its beak and its general facial structure would lead you to believe this suit was in fact a bird but after close inspection, you begin to notice details like its massive spined tail and the literal horns on its head which I guess is a better indication than any that this isn’t a bird. This suit also features some of the most creative designs from its blue, yellow, and brown color palette, to the flared scales at the end of the tail, this suit is just a treat to look at and probably even more so to wear around. Although we don’t have an exact, judging by the posts on the account’s Facebook page, we can only imagine that this suit sold sometime in 2015 for its given price tag of $11,575.

#6 Protogen ($15,400)

This suit simply known by the name “Protogen” was made by fursuit designer Jing F. in 2020. As you could probably guess, it is a protogen suit but for those who don’t know, protogen fursuits are suits based on fursonas that are basically half furry and half robot or cyborg. They usually wear these visors that cover their whole face and instead have a light-up face on them in place of it. This suit is likely so expensive because, as promised, this suit has a light-up visor on the front with LEDs that create a cute little smiley face. This means that the designer not only has to be experienced in fursuit design but also in electronics and circuitry. This is also why protogen fursuits are pretty hard to come by when commissioning them and can take ages to make

#5 Antonio Jackal ($15,600)

Yes, yet another entry from Mixedcandy makes this list, and it’s not the last either. This time it is a Jackal fursuit which goes by the name Antonio The Jackal. The suit was made in 2020 but only sold in December 2021. It sold after an extremely back-and-forth bidding war which eventually ended at the price of $15,600. As for the suit itself, it’s another awesome toony suit with these cute little frowning eyebrows and a nose ring which seems to be common among Coyote and Jackal suits.

#4 Manuel Dawg ($17,127)

This is yet another entry by fursuit maker Mixedcandy who just seems to make a killing when it comes to designing fursuits, and not without reason. Funnily enough, this suit was not a commission either, it was actually a premade suit that was listed on the Dealer’s Den in 2018 and sold on auction for the grand total of $17,127 to the highest bidder. This made it, at the time of its sale, the most expensive fursuit of all time but was quickly overtaken that same year by some of the following entries. The suit has awesome clawed hands and feet paws as well as a lovely ocean blue trim that really just makes the fur of the suit pop.

"My artist worked tirelessly on my reference sheet despite several complete revisions of the piece" Craig Draw My Fursona #3 Primal Visions Spartacus Cheetah ($17,500)

This was one of the suits that quickly trumped the Manuel Dog suit for the most expensive fursuit of all time in the same year of 2018. Made by fursuit maker Lex Rudd from the team at Primal Vision, this is a hyper-realistic suit that earns its price tag for the sheer amount of effort that went into crafting it. For one, most of the suits on this list are made in a toony style which is the typical style of a fursuit, so it is already more difficult to create a realistic fursuit. However, the fur of this suit was stitched onto a loom meaning each hair of this fur was put on individually as opposed to using strips of fur and cutting them out according to the shape needed. This is what allows the suit to have super intricate patterns on it as opposed to block patterns.

#2 Killer Wolf ($18,250)

This is another one of those realistic suits but this one is a little more disturbing, so I guess the name is pretty fitting. This suit was designed by fursuit maker Porazo from Clockwork Creatures and sold in 2018 to then top both the Manuel Dog suit and the Primal Visions Spartacus Cheetah for the most expensive fursuit in the very same year (what a year for fursuits?). Anyways, this suit features probably one of the most haunting wolves’ faces you will ever see, complemented pretty well by devilish, curling horns coming off either side of the top of its head. Then another horn on the nose just for safekeeping. Its value may also derive from the fact that it comes from the same studio that designed the original Wookie suits for Star Wars which is a neat little bonus. It also features what I can only assume are teeth around its eyes if you weren’t already having nightmares about this suit. That’s not the only teeth it has though as its mouth has some of the most evil, sharp-looking teeth I have ever seen.

#1 Roar Dragon ($23,500)

If you’ve done even a little research into the most expensive fursuits, then there’s a very good chance you’ve heard of the Roar Dragon fursuit. This suit borderline qualifies as a fursuit simply because of its complete lack of fur but it is modeled after a fursona so I guess it qualifies. It was made by fursuit maker Zaranthus in 2019 and has yet to be topped as the most expensive fursuit of all time. As opposed to faux fur, the suit is made from leather and latex which is layered over itself to create these awesome shimmering scales. The closest thing to fur on this suit might have to be the white mane of hair that runs down its back but apart from that, this dragon is all scales. On top of its crazy scaly texture, it’s another hyper-realistic suit giving yet another suit on this list this borderline terrifying appearance. All in all, this suit’s uniqueness and difficulty to make moderately justifies its ludicrous price tag.

Where Can I Get A Fursuit Of My Own?

All this talk about fursuits may have you wondering where you can get a fursuit of your own. Well, look no further as we have put together a brief list of the best fursuit makers for you so that you can save yourself all the browsing. Just note, we are fully aware there are some great individual artists you can go to out there, but we are just listing the best fursuit-making services.

Lemonbrat: Lemonbrat is the top dog when it comes to fursuit-making and if you’ve looked into getting a fursuit there’s not a chance in hell you haven’t heard of them and with good reason. They offer quality fursuits, they are reliable, they are experienced and sure they are a bit pricey but they already juggle all the previous attributes so they have to compromise somewhere I guess.

Fursonafy: Shameless self-plug here. In all seriousness, as well as furry art commissions, we offer quality fursuits for what we believe to be relatively affordable prices and we try our best to take on as many commissions as possible.

KoshkaFursuits: This is probably the most affordable option on the list but as a result, their commissions are very often closed, and getting a slot can be an absolute nightmare. However, if you do manage to get a slot, you can get a serious bang for your buck because these guys clearly know what they are doing when it comes to making a fursuit.

MadeFurYou: MadeFurYou is another super popular option that you’ve probably heard of if you have looked into getting a fursuit before. They are a pretty bog standard Fursuit making service however one interesting thing they offer is adoptable suits which means they model the fursuit after a reference sheet design that they have already made and you can choose the reference sheet you want them to model the suit after.

Introduction

If you’re an avid reader of our blog, then this may look like a repeat of our article “How To Make A Fursona” but you can think of this instead as an extension of that blog. While we have previously described how to actually start coming up with a fursona we never clarified how you can actually draw a fursona yourself. So here we are.

If you are new to the world of furries, you may be wondering what exactly a “fursona” is, and how to draw your own. A fursona is essentially an anthropomorphic animal version of yourself that you create as a sort of alternate persona or avatar. It is something that represents you when you participate in the furry community. Creating one can be a lot of fun, and it’s something that many people find useful in their everyday life. If you want to know how to create your very own unique and personal fursona, keep reading! Although it can be quite daunting, drawing your own character isn’t as hard as it may seem at first glance. After all, there are plenty of other people who have created their own already! To get started with this tutorial on How To Draw Your Fursona, follow along with these helpful tips and tricks.

Step 1: Understand What Makes Your Fursona Unique

The first step in drawing your fursona is to understand what makes it different from other fursonas out there. Although your furry persona doesn’t have to be particularly unique, it is helpful to know what sets it apart from the rest. Creating a fursona is all about creating something that speaks to you, so even if your fursona is nothing like anyone else’s fursona and it sounds borderline crazy, who cares? You should embrace that difference if it’s what you want, it is your fursona after all.

It is however a good idea to avoid fursonas that are too similar to those of other people as it can create some confusion. By all means take inspiration from wherever you want, but try not to copy another person’s fursona down to the last detail.

On the flip side, don’t go out of your way to make your fursona as unique as possible just for the sake of it to the point where you no longer even identify with it. Making fursonas shouldn’t be an originality contest, it should be fun and its originality should come second.

Step 2: Doodle Your Ideas

Now that you know what type of fursona you want to have, it’s time to start doodling some ideas! When you are first brainstorming your fursona, doodling can be a great way to get your creative juices flowing. Nobody is going to get anything right on their first go, so use this period of doodling as an opportunity to get an idea of what you’re looking for in your fursona. There are no rules when it comes to doodling your fursona, so use whatever medium you feel most comfortable with. If you feel like writing is your preferred method of brainstorming, go for it! If you feel like drawing is more your thing, that works too! No matter what method you choose, remember that there are no wrong ideas. You are free to brainstorm as creatively as you like. You don’t have to decide on your fursona’s entire design at once, either. You can come back to your doodles any time you want and add to them or change them up a bit if you aren’t happy with what you’ve come up with so far. Drawing or writing your ideas is a great way to help them come to life, and it can also be a helpful way to organize your thoughts. You should note that this step may not be necessary for everyone. A lot of people are pretty good at just nailing things once they’ve got an idea of it in their head, especially amongst more creative artists, so take this step with a pinch of salt, but we do recommend it nonetheless.

Step 3: Choose a Basic Proportional Structure

Once you’ve got your basic idea for your fursona out of your head and onto paper, it’s time to choose a basic proportional structure for it. Your furry avatar doesn’t have to be a certain type of animal, but it is helpful to know what type of animal you would like to be based on your basic design. This allows you to look at reference images of the actual animal you are modeling it after so you can get the proportions right. From there, you can also decide what type of fur you would like to have. The type of fur an animal has varies from animal to animal, for example, a ferret, or a lot of small rodents for that matter have a lot more matted fur whereas some cats are a lot more fluffy. This stage of the designing process is when you decide things like: if your fursona is a rabbit, whether or not it has long ears. If it does, you can choose whether or not they’d be black, brown, or white. Working with these types of decisions can help you decide how to structure your fursona’s body. It can also be helpful to look at drawings of animals that are similar to the one you’ve chosen for your fursona. For example, if you have chosen to be a rabbit, it can be helpful to look at pictures of other rabbit fursonas to get an idea of how other people are structuring their bodies.

"The artists had amazing response times and were constantly updating me on my piece" Clara Draw My Fursona Step 4: Draw in Shading and Color

Now that you have a basic proportional structure for your fursona, it’s time to add some color and shading to your drawing. Adding these extra details to your drawing is a great way to bring it to life and make your fursona feel more real. You have to remember that everyone has their own style of coloring and shading so don’t get too caught up in how it should be shaded, but if you are completely clueless watching a coloring and shading tutorial wouldn’t do any harm. It can also be helpful to add some color to your fursona as a way of deciding what color its fur will be. For example, if you’ve chosen to be a grey wolf with black ears, you can choose how grey you would like your fur to be by adding grey to your fursona’s body. Adding shading and color to your drawing can also be a helpful way of deciding what your fursona’s face would look like. You’d be surprised by how much color can affect how much a sketch looks. For example, if your drawing has light fur, it can be helpful to add darker shading to your fursona’s face just to really bring out those lighter tones more. Then once you have those decided, this doubles a helpful way of deciding what colors your fursona’s eyes, nose, and mouth would be.

Step 5: Add The Final Details And Enjoy!

Once you’ve added the last of the colors to your drawing and you’re happy with the way it looks, it’s time to add your final touches! At this point, you can add whatever details you’d like to your fursona. You can decide what your fursona’s clothing looks like if you’d like to. You can also add any other accessories or elements to your drawing that you’d like. Granted, this is no easy task either, this requires more coloring and more brainstorming but it’s worth it. No matter what you decide to add to your drawing, make sure that it represents you as an individual. Add things to your fursona that just really screams “me”. Once you’ve finished your drawing, you can display it anywhere you’d like. You can frame it and hang it on your wall if you’d like, if it’s digital you can ideally make that your profile picture. You can put it in a notebook or scrapbook. No matter what you choose to do with your finished drawing, make sure that you enjoy it!

"My artist worked tirelessly on my reference sheet despite several complete revisions of the piece" Craig Draw My Fursona What Do I Do With My Fursona Now?

The question that a lot of people face once they have created their fursona is: “well, what do I do with it now?” Good question. Here’s a list of just a few of the things you can do with your fursona once it’s made.

If you’re looking for a way to monetize your fursona or if some time has passed, you could always put your fursona up for adoption and make a little change from it.

Alternatively, as mentioned before, what most furries do is make their fursona their profile pictures on platforms like Discord, Twitter etc.

Additionally, if you’re looking to get a fursuit made somewhere down the line, that fursona can now be used as a reference for your fursuit maker.

Maybe fursuits aren’t your thing and you’d rather get a cute plushie made. Well, the same rule applies, you can now use that fursona as a reference for anyone who makes custom plushies.

What If I Can’t Draw My Own Fursona?

Creating a furry fursona can be and generally should be a lot of fun, but unfortunately for some, art isn’t their strong suit. This can be pretty frustrating, but there are workarounds. So, below we’ve listed some of the easiest ways of getting your very own fursona without having to draw it yourself.

Furry Art Commission:

One of the most common solutions to this is getting a furry art commission.

You can find a furry art commission pretty easily on most freelancing services like Fiverr, Upwork, etc. It’s always important to browse through multiple sellers as it can be really easy to just settle on the cheapest option or someone with one good piece in their portfolio. What is probably a better way of approaching this is checking the portfolios of several artists and making a shortlist of your favorites. Then from your shortlist, you can pick the one that balances both quality and affordability the best.

However, if you aren’t too sure about getting art from a freelance seller, you can always refer to sites like our own which provide art services done by professional furry artists, so you can completely eliminate that whole browsing process.

Adopt A Fursona:

Maybe you aren’t willing to part with a big chunk of cash, believe us, we completely get it. In which case, you can try adopting a fursona which is usually a lot cheaper and you can see what you’re going to get for your money before you part with it this way.

The best way to go about adopting a fursona is usually by contacting people under hashtags like  #adoptafursona or #fursonadopt, on sites like Instagram or Twitter where people are advertising the fursonas they are putting up for adoption. Even if it doesn’t cost any money it is still important that you contact the artist to make sure that you have their permission to use their fursona wherever you please.

This isn’t to suggest that these are the only sites that you can use to adopt a fursona. In fact there are many great alternatives such as Etsy, Deviant Art, Furaffinity, Reddit, The Dealer’s Den and more are also great alternatives to Twitter and Instagram as there are hundreds of furry artists looking to put their fursonas up for adoption on them.

BNA: Brand New Animal is an 80s influenced 2020 action, sci-fi anime beaming with neon lights in its vaporwave aesthetic revolving around a world in which humans coexist with what are known as Beastmen. These Beastmen are discriminated against for a gene called Beast Factor which allows them to transform into animals. The show follows the life of a girl called Michiru Kagemori who suddenly became a tanuki beastman after a blood transfusion, as you do. Following her blood transfusion, her friend Nazuna Hiwatashi is abducted, so naturally, she runs away, seeking refuge in Anima City, a safe haven for beastmen where she meets an employee of the city mayor, Shirou Ogami. Together they investigate what caused Michiru’s random transformation. As their investigation continues, the conspiracy of Anima City thickens, uncovering the darkest secrets of their society.

BNA: Brand New Animal is licensed by and available to watch on Netflix.

4. African Salaryman

Also known as African Office Worker, African Salaryman is slapstick comedy following the monotonous 9-5 office life of a lion, a toucan and a lizard as they get caught up in far from normal office life antics. Being animals from the Savannah, you could probably imagine that office life isn’t perfectly suited for them and they make this no secret at all as a lion struggles to commit to his diet, a lizard attempts to learn party tricks to impress his coworkers and a toucan can’t wait for his summer vacation away from the old ball and chain. Everything about this show doesn’t make sense and its perfect like that, because it’s not supposed to.

You can watch African Salaryman on Funimation.

5. Damekko Dōbutsu

This show is kinda like reverse Zootopia. This 2005 comedy, in its almost chibi art style, tells the story of the “useless” wolf Uruno, who, rather than being unable to repress his savage desires, is actually unable to hunt and kill and is told he does not have any of the traits of a wolf. As a result of his timid behaviour, he’s sent to live in the forest with other equally “useless” animals where he meets Ushara, a loud mouthed and borderline aggressive rabbit. On his travels, Uruno meets several other animals who just do not fit the behaviour that is expected of them, like a clumsy cheetah, a devilish unicorn and a near-sighted eagle. Together they must work to regain their animal instincts and live up to their names.

Damekko Dōbutsu, like Hyper Police, isn’t available on any major streaming platforms.

#7. Skunks

Okay, so they smell a little bit… Well actually, they don’t. For the most part skunks smelling is just a stereotype because of their spraying defense mechanism, which I’ll admit, probably smells pretty bad. So, when Looney Tunes’ Pepe Le Pew makes the other characters turn green with nausea, just know, it’s all a hoax. However, most skunk fursonas will come in counter-shaded colors like black and white, brown and white, cream and black which are all examples of aposematism, or in Layman’s terms, warning coloration. Often the color palettes of skunks pop so much because it is nature’s way of saying “hey, if you mess with this guy, it’s likely going to end badly for you”. Similar traits can be seen in poison dart frogs or cuttlefish, as it’s not uncommon in the animal kingdom.

#6. Marsupials

Marsupials refer to animals like kangaroos, wombats, koalas etc. and probably displays one of the most diverse pools of possible fursonas in this list. While they all do resemble rodent-like qualities, they are vastly different. The main difference is that they are “pouched mammals”, meaning they leave the womb at an embryonic stage and grow within the mother’s pouch for a while. This makes marsupials quite caring and maternal creatures when it comes to the females, but the males on the other hand seem to have more combative tendencies to say the least. Male kangaroos especially, likely because of their ability to bounce on their tail and box, are viewed as more defensive creatures, ready to protect what’s theirs with a good ol’ fashion scrap. I mean, just look at Tekken’s Roger and Roger Jr.

#5. Dinosaur

Although they’re quite uncommon, there’s a good chance you’ve seen a dinosaur fursuit. They seem to be more common in the fursuiting community than the furry art community and they might be due to a few things. They likely aren’t used as fursonas very often due to their lack of “furriness” per say. They haven’t got the most lovable faces in the world nor do they have lovable personalities. They’re carnivorous and aggressive, a lot of them don’t work well in groups, it’s just a recipe for disaster. They’re big and scaly and while some artists definitely pull off the cute dinosaur look, it’s much easier to do so with a dog or a cat for example. Even shows like Jim Henson’s Dinosaurs (which, don’t get me wrong, is an amazing show) struggles to make the dinosaurs personable; the puppets come off as slightly unsettling and they slip too easily into the famous uncanny valley.

On the contrary, they have definitely got some things going for them. For one, not all dinosaurs are scaly creatures, in fact, a good portion of them have feathers, it was even recently discovered that the T-Rex had feathers, not scales. Furthermore, because dinosaurs vary so vastly in shape and size, it’s hard to put them in a box, just go on to furaffinity and search “dinosaur furry” and look at the thousands of results.

#4. Deer

Belonging to the ungulate family (odd-toed, hoofed animals), deers are much more timid animals. They’re not extremely sociable nor are they particularly loud animals. Making their most notable appearance in Disney’s Bambi, deer are extremely alert to danger and typically respond with flight in fight or flight situations.

Their shy behaviour leads many to believe that they are rare animals, when in actuality, they have quite a dense population Almost all male deer (apart from some like water deer) have antlers that are used to battle for mating purposes and despite popular belief, their antlers are not permanent, they shed and regrow every year. Female deer on the other hand, aside from reindeer, do not grow antlers as they rarely have use for them and they can make navigating forestry quite difficult.

Different types of deer vary greatly in size and stature but for the most part resemble each other quite closely. A moose for example, the largest species of deer, can grow to be around 2 meters in height while a roe deer typically doesn’t get taller than 75 cm.

"My artist worked tirelessly on my reference sheet despite several complete revisions of the piece" Craig Draw My Fursona #3. Squirrel

Making their video game debut in Conker’s Bad Fur Day for the Nintendo 64, squirrely belong to the same family of animals as chipmunks and prairie dogs. You can see a whole catalog of other squirrely characters throughout time, but for some reason, they are still underrepresented within the furry fandom. You got the classics like The Nut Job, Ice Age, The Nut Job 2 Nutty By Nature, Secret Life of Pets and with The Nut Job 3 supposedly in the works, there’s just no telling what the future could look like for Squirrels in the furry fandom. We’re joking of course, but this is likely why there aren’t that many squirrel fursonas, making up less than 1% of fursonas, there’s just not many good examples of squirrels for people to base their fursona off of.

Luckily, we’re here to help. Squirrels typically have slender bodies with large eyes and a long bushy tail. This tail assists them with their balance as they jump from tree to tree. For the mostly tree-dwelling squirrels, they need great eyesight so that they can see where they are jumping. Like most rodents, they have large incisors (front teeth) for gnawing and can stuff their cheeks to store food. Squirrels can be both ground-dwelling and tree dwelling, the ground-dwelling squirrels being more sociable than the tree dwelling ones, who tend to take to more solitary lifestyles.

#2. Ferret

Unlike a lot of the entries on this list, it’s hard to find a good example of a beloved ferret in cartoons. The best we could find was Scorch from 101 Dalmatians from like 60 years ago or with a bit of a stretch you could argue that the new Disney / Pixar film Turning Red is technically about a ferret because red pandas are closer to a species of ferret than they are bears, but that can get a little bit messy. Point is, there is no clear example of ferrets in mainstream TV, why is this?

Just to clarify, there (probably) isn’t some personal vendetta against ferrets by corporations, ferrets just don’t have very distinct qualities that would make you go “hey, that’s like a ferret”, or at least not to the unobservant eye. For one, they are not rodents, they belong to the weasel family with animals like stoats, polecats and ermines. They also aren’t recently domesticated animals, evidence shows that they have been domesticated for the past 2500 years and were used to hunt rabbits and rodents. Even in recent history, like the Second World War, they’ve been used to protect grain storage from small mammals. The name ferret derives from the Latin word furittus which means “little thief” which was likely given to them because of their habit of secretly hiding away small items.

#1. Insect

This one’s probably not a surprise to a lot of you, because let’s face it, insects are a hard sell. There’s no shame in having an insect as your fursona, but it’s easy to see why many don’t opt for them as their first choice. They’ve seen some limelight here and there like Kung Fu Panda’s Mantis or for some reason the late 90s to 2000s obsession with ants (A Bug’s Life, Antz, Ant Bully, like seriously, why are these so many ant movies) and they’re by no means unoriginal, but, they lack that furry factor. Aside from all the more reptilian furries, fursonas are predominantly physically furry characters most of the time with traits or features that resemble human qualities. They’re personable. Insects on the other hand are small, commonly feared and harder to observe than most animals.

However, it would be unfair to not shed some light on what it takes to be an insect, so here goes. An insect is most often identified by the fact that it has six legs and three body sections (head, thorax and abdomen). Just these qualities alone encompass hundreds of thousands, if not millions of different insects, from bees, to beetles, to butterflies. Look at any pokemon game for a good example of the hundreds of “bug type” creatures like Vespiqueen or Butterfree. Most insects live in colonies of the same insect like a nest of ants or a hive of bees likely because of their size and the threat they face when caught on their own.

If you want good examples of how to make an insect fursona, DeviantArt has a whole catalog of amazing artwork that can get you inspired. It’s definitely possible to pull off an insect fursona with a little bit of creativity.

What If My Fursona’s Species Isn’t Unique?

Hopefully by now, you have a better gauge of the number of options you have when making a fursona. Even within these species, there are thousands of sub-species and breeds of animals that the list could just go on and on. Or maybe you’re overwhelmed for this exact same reason, so many options to choose from, and not enough time or creativity to execute all of them. That’s okay. There’s no shame in having any animal as your fursona, whether it be a wolf or an insect, after all, wolves are one of the most popular fursonas for a reason. Also, the most popular furry type is hybrid, because people struggle to decide on just one species and at the end of the day, your fursona is yours, you don’t have to make it to appease anyone but yourself.

It’s no secret that the furry subculture is experiencing an explosive renaissance. With internet access opening up to a larger audience and digital communication becoming more intimate, online communities have been able to flourish in a way that would not have been possible previously. One of the most prominent examples of this phenomenon is known as ‘Furry’. Furry culture is a collective term for people who identify with animals A growing number of these individuals gather together in real spaces and virtually through meet-up groups and social media platforms, such as Instagram and Telegram. One of the largest conventions catering specifically to furry enthusiasts is called Biggest Little Fur Con (BLFC). For those who aren’t familiar with the subculture, it may seem strange or even creepy to dress up as an animal or spend time with others who do so. However, there are many reasons why people find value in doing so.

Why Do People Enjoy Being In The Furry Community?

The furry subculture is primarily driven by one concept: accepting and being comfortable with one’s desires. Yes, in a literal sense it’s not about that at all, but at its core, that is what keeps the furry community so tightly knit. People who are in the furry community may have an appreciation for cartoon animals, or they may just have an interest in fursuits and fursuiting. There is just such a wide breadth of things to invest yourself into in the fandom that it would be unfair of them not to be a welcoming community. The furry subculture provides a space where people who may feel repressed by society’s conceptions of sexuality and gender norms can let loose and be themselves. As the furry community has grown, more people are finding the language and terms to communicate their interests and desires. It may be the case that there is already a furry meet-up group near you. If not, there are many different ways to get involved with the furry community online. FurAffinity.net is the largest furry art website with a community of artists and fans from all over the world. There is also an active Traders Guild on the site, where you can find and purchase products from other members. Furry Amino is a social media platform that allows members to interact with one another and share their interests and desires.

Regardless, we’re here to discuss how you can make the most out of your time at the next Biggest Little Fur Con as well as some general housekeeping rules that you should follow just to make your time as enjoyable as possible.

How To Make The Most Of BLFC

The first thing to keep in mind is that the convention is primarily intended for socializing. While there are vendors, talks, and panels, you should approach them like you would attending a meet-up group: just to interact with others and learn more about the subculture. Keep in mind that most furry conventions are 18+ events, so there may be content you’re not interested in seeing or hearing. If you are under 18, then you will not be allowed to attend. This doesn’t mean that there’s going to be mursuits and furry porn flying around left right and center but it just means that the event managers acknowledge that it may not be the perfect environment for a minor. There is no shame in being underage and being curious, but be respectful of the rules of the event. Make sure to bring water and snacks with you to stave off hunger and dehydration. If you’re attending the convention with a friend or significant other, make sure to check in with each other to stay safe and have fun.

Bring A Portable Charger

If you are going to be attending any event that requires you to be on your phone or computer for long periods of time (like any convention), be sure to bring a portable charger. Convention halls have notoriously terrible cell reception, and being able to keep your phone charged up to follow other attendees around the event and take photos is a must. You’ll be much less stressed out if your device isn’t about to die every five minutes.

Don’t Be Afraid To Mingle

This might be the most important thing to take away from this post, but mingling is one of the most important and one of the most fun parts of furry conventions. We understand it can be terrifying having to speak to completely random strangers. Social anxiety and shyness are common in all subcultures but can be particularly prevalent in the furry community. If you are nervous about meeting other attendees, remember that the people you meet are just as nervous about meeting you. Furry conventions are a safe space for everyone to be themselves, and the people around you will appreciate your openness and welcoming attitude. Furry conventions are some of the only places in the world where you’ll probably meet other furries considering few there are and how much fewer of them are actually open about being a furry. So, take advantage of the meet-up groups and social media platforms to find people to visit with and explore the convention with.

"The artists had amazing response times and were constantly updating me on my piece" Clara Draw My Fursona Be Conscious Of Your Body Language

Humans are incredibly reliant on nonverbal communication, but many of us don’t think about how we’re communicating with others. Take a moment to sit back and think about your posture: are you slumping over or squeezing up? Are your arms crossed or are they open? Are you looking around at the people around you or are you staring straight ahead? You’ll find that most of these habits fall into one of two categories: either you’re putting up a wall against the world, or you’re desperately trying to get attention from it. To put yourself in the middle ground between these two approaches, sit up with your back straight, keep your arms at your sides, and make eye contact with the people around you. This may sound like a random tangent but it’s extremely important especially if you are wearing a fursuit. People no longer have the ability to read your facial expressions or anything about you when you are wearing a suit and your speech can become muffled and hard to understand. Therefore, the way you carry yourself is one of the main indications of how approachable you come off as.

Be Conscious Of The Scents You’re Emitting

If you’re wearing a strong cologne or perfume, you may be putting off a scent that is overwhelming or uncomfortable for those around you. While you don’t want to be scentless, it’s best to apply fragrances sparingly and be mindful of how they may be affecting others. If you have severe allergies, you may also want to keep a travel-size antihistamine on hand to help with sniffling and itching. If you are wearing a fursuit, be mindful of scents that may come off of your costume. While many fursuits are cleaned regularly, some are not. Keep in mind that the convention hall may not have the best ventilation, so be mindful of the scents you may be emitting. If you notice that a part of your costume is coming off on someone else, apologize and take care of it as soon as possible.

However, this isn’t to suggest you shouldn’t be applying any sort of deodorant to mask natural body odors because, as mentioned before, a lot of the conventions may not have great ventilation and those suits can get pretty hot pretty fast. This means you’re going to be baking in that suit, marinating in your own sweat which as you could guess probably doesn’t smell good to anyone.

If you’re going to be on your feet for a large amount of time, you’ll want to make sure that you’re taking care of your feet. You can do this by wearing comfortable shoes, keeping your toenails short and clean, and applying foot cream to your heels and other areas that may be prone to dryness. We’re not going to lie, standing around in a fursuit all day or even just standing around all day without the fursuit can get pretty tiring so it’s okay to sit down for a second just to rest your legs or take a break or whatever. Be mindful of where you’re walking and what you’re stepping in. If you’re wearing a fursuit that you’ve spent literally thousands of dollars on, the last thing you’d want is a piece of gum getting stuck within the fur of the suit that is just an absolute nightmare to get out. You’ll probably have to be extra careful if it happens to rain on the day of your attendance as it can become very easy to get mud on your suit. You may want to bring a pair of clean socks with you in case you end up stepping in something particularly gross. If you’re attending the masquerade, break in your shoes before the convention; you don’t want to be in pain while walking on stage.

Conclusion

The furry subculture is a unique and welcoming community, but it can be challenging to break into. We know that there are a lot of misconceptions and hate surrounding the fandom, so taking that big step can be quite daunting. However, if you just throw yourself into the deep end we are quite sure you’ll realize that most furries and even fursuiters are just normal people with a hobby like anyone else.

While many conventions have a larger population of younger attendees, BLFC is a convention that caters to the over-18 crowd. Even so, BLFC is a great place to meet people and get involved with the furry community. No matter who you are or what your interests are, there is a place for you in the furry community you just have to search in the right places.

7 Coolest Fursuit Accessories To Take Your Fursuit To The Next Level

What Is A Fursuit?

A fursuit is an animal costume worn by some members of the furry fandom known as furries. Not all furries wear them nor is it a requirement to wear one to be considered a furry. Much like a cosplayer, furries will often wear these fursuits when going to something like a meetup or a convention as it’s a chance to show off their work to other furries. Some fursuiters make their fursuits themselves, and others commission fursuit makers to create a professional fursuit for them with all the bells and whistles that come with it.

What Are Fursuit Accessories?

Fursuit accessories on the other hand are little bits and bobs that don’t just come with your fursuit that can be added on afterward. These can range from cool little trinkets that can help further personalize your suit, to genuinely practical items that make wearing the suit for extended periods of time a lot more comfortable.

#1 Furry Badge

Furry badges are an awesome way to completely personalize your suit and stand out from the crowd. They are badges that contain an illustration of the owner’s fursona as well as the name of their fursona. The beauty of furry badges is that you don’t even have to be wearing a fursuit to wear a badge as a lot of people want to be known for their fursona anyway, regardless of whether or not they have a suit. The issue with these is that they can’t just be done by any furry artist unless you have access to some good badge printing. Otherwise, you’ll have to reach out to someone who both prints and creates furry badges.

#2 Ring

If you’ve at the very least seen a fursuit, then, chances are you know that a standard ring isn’t going to fit the hand or foot of it. However, you’re in luck, because there are larger rings specifically made to fit fursuits. So if you’re really looking for a way to bling out your new suit, maybe try one of these.

Given that you are already dressing up as an animal, why not slap on a trendy little collar just to personalize your fursuit that little bit more? This is a very fitting accessory for any dog or cat fursuit but it is obviously not exclusive to just them. The brilliant thing about collars is their diversity, they don’t even necessarily have to just be a classic old red collar, they can be spiked chokers, they can be vintage leather, the customizability of collars is amazing and it just adds that little bit of nuance to your suit.

#4 Piercings

Yes, it’s true, you can get piercings for even your fursuit and they can look pretty damn cool as well. These piercings can range from studs to fool hoop earrings and the best part is they can go on so many places on your suit. You can get septum piercings, ear lobe piercings (and pretty much any part of the ear), eyebrow piercings, etc, the options are so vast and the best part is, they’re also pretty affordable. You can get them from sellers like these on Etsy for great prices.

#5 Props

This one may sound a bit vague so we’ll explain what we mean a little better. Props for your fursuit are little trinkets that you can carry around that just say a little bit more about your fursona. For example, you can get a prop bone, or if you’re feeling a little bit sillier you can get prop fried eggs that can sit on top of your fursuit’s head. The props don’t just have to stop at meaningless items though, you can commission props to be made for your suit if you want something that really sets your suit apart from the crowd.

#6 Name Tag

This kind of serves the same purpose as a badge but it serves it in a different way. What better way to compliment that shiny new collar you got than adding a fancy name tag to it? You don’t even have to introduce yourself, people can just read that little name tag around your neck and they can hopefully make an educated guess as to what your name is.

#7 Cooling Vest

A cooling vest may not make you look any more stylish than any of the previous entries but it is probably the most practical out of any of the things on this list. Wearing a fursuit all day, especially at conventions held in the summer, can start to feel like your very own personal sauna so a cooling vest is probably one of the best ways to combat this. The greatest part about a cooling vest as well is that it doesn’t affect the look of your suit at all, you can just throw it on underneath your suit and stay cool, unbeknownst to anyone else.

"My artist worked tirelessly on my reference sheet despite several complete revisions of the piece" Craig Draw My Fursona Where Can I Buy Fursuit Accessories?

Etsy : This is likely the most reliable place to get your fursuit accessories from as there are just so many to choose from and they are often customizable. Not to mention you can quite easily get in touch with the seller to make any queries about the customization of things like nametags and badges or just general queries about the product they are selling.

FursuitSupplies : These guys offer some awesome accessories and the best part is they are a trusted private seller, meaning there is no risk of some sketchy sellers trying to scam you out of your money for some cheap plastic. While most of the sales are for faux fur and other fursuit supplies as the name suggests, they do offer some great alternative products.

Lobitoworks : While they don’t have the largest stock of items, they have some of the coolest props you’ll find like comically large plush cigars or massive spiked collars. If you’re looking for something that really adds the final touches to your suit, I recommend Lobitoworks as your guy.

How Expensive Are Fursuit Accessories?

The best part about fursuit accessories is that for the most part, they are relatively inexpensive. I say relatively because if you are willing to spend upwards of $3000 on a fursuit, then I can only imagine that you aren’t extremely opposed to throwing another $15 – $20 at a cute little accessory for your suit.

What’s Discord?

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past 5 years, then you might have no clue what this article is even about. Not to worry, we’ll catch you up to speed on everything you need to know about furry discord servers before we jump into the 5 best servers.

In short, Discord is a communication service that allows its users to message, voice and video call, stream their screens etc. You can use it to chat with friends, meet new people and most importantly build communities. One of the main features of Discord however are servers; they’re like group chats but for potentially thousands of people, with hundreds of text channels for hundreds of different subjects. Thousands of great communities have been built just through discord, and furry communities are no exception.

Discord’s emphasis on individuality and innovation, allowing its users to have unique banners, animated profile pictures, assign roles to a server’s members, unique permissions for specific roles, assistant bots, listening parties and more gives users almost complete freedom to do whatever they want. This makes it ideal for building and maintaining large communities.

Then, What’s a Furry Discord Server?

As you might’ve been able to guess, a furry discord server is just a discord server exclusively for furries. While there is no way of verifying whether or not someone is actually a furry or just a troll, this issue is rectified pretty quickly by discord’s handy permanent ban feature. As well as this, most furry discord servers go through a validation process that makes users discuss their likes and dislikes, fursona (if you have one), age etc.

Furry communities can even have sub-communities. For example, furry Minecraft communities, furry role-playing communities or rather 18+ furry communities, where users can share NSFW (furry porn) art. While we are going to go through a list of the 10 (what we think are) best furry communities, this is more of a general overview, so, there’s a good chance that we won’t cover a community that takes your fancy as much.

Level up your fursona with the help of our expert designers

"The artists had amazing response times and were constantly updating me on my piece" Clara Draw My Fursona Where Can I Find Them?

With that in mind, there are plenty of places you can find furry communities for yourself if you aren’t happy with the list we offer. Websites such as discord.me provide a database of hundreds of thousands of discord servers and categorize them based on their tags. It’s also a great place to advertise your own server, not even necessarily a furry one, if you are trying to build your own community. Pretty much any server with a platinum subscription you can be sure is legit, but you’re here to find the best of the best. Sites like top.gg , discordservers.com and disboard.org all also provide the same service.

Why Should I Join a Furry Discord Server?

Meeting New People: With that whole pandemic thing going on, something that has become increasingly difficult is meeting new people, let alone people who share your interests. Furry discord servers (any discord server) essentially puts you in a room with thousands of people who share the exact same interest as you. Given that mainstream media is typically hostile to the furry fandom, furry discord servers provide a safe space to meet new people where you can be pretty sure that you aren’t just being used as the butt of a joke.

Share Your Art: Although sites like Furrafinity and DeviantArt allow you to share your art with others, none of them really allow for live discussion about your art like discord servers do. Sure you can read comments or whatever, but with furry discord servers that typically have a dedicated art channel, users can send any of their art and discuss it, whether it be praise or constructive criticism. It’s a great way to improve your fursona or get inspiration if you are looking to make one.

Take Part in Events: If you are looking for a way to keep up to date on upcoming furry events such as meetups or conventions, then a discord server is perfect for you. With access to thousands of furries, it’s easy to ask for recommendations on events to go to or ask about what to expect from one if you’ve never been.

Look For Contests and Giveaways: Furry contests are few and far apart in non-furry discord servers, which is why furry discord servers are so great. Contests typically boil down to an art or animation contest and can even sometimes have prizes. Better yet, some furry discord servers will occasionally do furry giveaways with prizes like fursuit accessories if that’s something you’re interested in.

Gaming Communities: Sometimes finding the right people to play your favorite games with can be really difficult, luckily discord caters more towards the gaming community than anything. A lot of furry discord servers have a gaming sub-category within them for fellow furries looking to play games with each other.

It’s funny because it’s the Discord logo… but it’s an animal

The Typical Joining Process

Unlike a lot of servers, furry discords are a lot more scrupulous with who they let in. Thanks to their extreme marginalization by mainstream media, they can get quite a bit of hate. Because of this, a lot of servers will go through a similar process to verify your furriness.

  1. You’ll be asked to click some sort of verification button that begins an invisible timer on the joining process
  2. After clicking the verification button you will likely be DM’d an automated response with several prompts like “What is your fursona name?”, “How old are you?” , “How specifically did you find our server?” etc.
  3. Once you have answered the prompts, your entry to the server will be reviewed by one of the server staff who will ask a follow up question like “Why are you looking to join the server?”.
  4. Once this is answered, the staff will decide whether or not they should let you in, and given you’re not blatantly trolling, they will let you in to the server.

Sidenote, many servers have an introduction channel where you can introduce yourself to other members while you wait for your request to join the server to be reviewed. Now, let’s get into the list.

An Empty Discord Server 🙁

Paradox Paws

If you, like me, don’t want to spend hours waiting for verification to get into a server, then Paradox Paws is perfect for you. They are a lot more lenient with their verification process while maintaining a non-toxic community that is pretty welcoming even if you are unsure how you feel about the furry fandom. Some members in the server aren’t even furries but just supporters of the community! This makes the server great if you are new to the furry fandom as there is no elitism about how long you have spent in it.

Looking for a movie or games night? Paradox Paws has your back with their weekly games and movie night.

Also, if you are looking for a furry gaming community, then look not further, as Paradox Paws put a huge emphasis on its gaming community, more specifically, Minecraft and Pokemon. They even have a dedicated Minecraft server!

Planet Floof

Planet Floof is one of the few furry discord servers that is explicitly SFW… I mean seriously, they do not tolerate NSFW content. Anything from yiff porn to naked furries will result in an almost immediate ban on this server. This makes it perfect for the younger furry audience who are still looking to meet other furries. As well as this, like most furry discord servers, there is a large emphasis on LGBT and gender positivity in this server, xenophobia is not tolerated.

They also have an art advertising channel for furry artists looking to self-promote or network themselves and since they are SFW only, you don’t have to worry about furry porn in the art channel. This also doubles as an opportunity for furries looking to commission someone to make a piece for them to get in direct contact with their artist.

Much like Paradox Paws, they don’t have a particularly grueling verification process either, you simply have to explain what was appealing about the server to you and whether or not you are a furry. Of course they are less likely to let you in if you aren’t a furry, but they are pretty welcoming regardless.

If you’re a Discord Nitro user, Furr Cafe has some of my favorite custom emotes including some great animated ones. Also, Thanks to their dedicated roleplaying channel, this server is great for any furries who’ve been looking for a safe space to roleplay with hundreds of others. Or, if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, this server has a pokemon bot… you can literally play pokemon on discord with this bot. Pokemon will randomly appear in the text channel and the first person to type the catch command can catch it. You can battle other furries with your teams and trade pokemon, it’s really cool.

The staff in this server are really helpful as well, joining a new server can be a bit confusing but if you just ask, they are quite often happy to help with any issues you’re having. Some of the members are even musicians and

The Furry Forest

Furry Forest is one of the less safe for work entries on this list due to its NSFW art channels. It’s also one of the smaller communities but they describe themselves as an environment “away from the chaos of other fur servers” and that they are. With only 600 people, this server is much quieter compared to the previous three and entry into the server isn’t really difficult at all.

They’re also pretty frequent with art giveaways for members who are willing to invite a friend as entry into the giveaway!

West’s Haven

This one was tricky because it was (from what I found) the hardest server to get into. However, this difficulty is not without reason, they claim to have, and I’m still not entirely sure how this works, a “Zero-Raider Entry System”. Regardless of whatever Tony Stark technology they have running behind the scenes on this server, it is the safest space for furries and non-furries alike to express their interest. Furry servers, more than any other discord servers, get raided like crazy whether it be homophobic or transphobic attacks. There is an absolute zero-tolerance policy on top of the scrupulous verification that you have to go through. If you’re looking for a safe place to hunker down and just let your hair loose on discord, West’s Haven is your best bet.

They even have personalized roles, an art channel, a dedicated events team, and a “no-drama guarantee”.

How Do I Start My Own Furry Discord Server?

Starting a discord server of your own is the easy part. Growing a community of your own however can be a bit more challenging. If you are looking to start a large community like the ones listed above, you need one of two things: pre-existing clout or a good reason for people to join. Here’s some steps you can take to start building the server.

  • Before you do anything, make the server look presentable. Make dedicated text channels, verification bots, automatic role-assignment, the full works!
    • The less professional a server looks, unless it’s a server for friends, the less likely people are to stay on it
  • Create quirky roles that give people a sense of progression and welcoming into the server. Some servers allow users to climb up the ranks depending on their activity in it.
  • Start inviting people. This could be your friends or people you know may be interested.
    • If you’re struggling to find people to invite, consider checking out furry subreddits or other social media to see if you can spark any interest there. Hopefully these people can start some initial buzz; encourage them to invite friends of their own.
  • Assign people you know you can trust to moderate the server, you’re gonna need it. There’s a good chance the server could get raided and trolled so it’s key to have people on at all times who can handle that sort of thing
  • While this is optional, if your server is getting traction, you should consider some paid advertisement on sites like discord.me as if your server has a growing and active community, people looking for furry communities will feel more inclined to join.
    • Also, if you do decide to advertise on these sites, make sure you are marking your server with relevant keywords such as “furry” or “yiff” as it gives it a better chance of being found by users.
  • Host weekly or even daily events. This can be a giveaway, a competition, movie nights, gaming sessions, anything you wish really. As long as it keeps the users of the server engaged, it should be alright. This is to maintain activity on the server.

Of course this isn’t a guaranteed route to success, luck will always play a big factor on whether or not your community is thriving, but those are just some of the steps you can take to increase your chances of success greatly.

Are There Any Discord Alternatives?

If, for some reason, you have no interest in using Discord, there are several text-based communities out there that are equally if not bigger than some of the aforementioned Discord servers. Social media like twitter, reddit, even VRChat, has some great furry communities. Here’s just a few of the furry communities in each.

Reddit: Let’s just get the easiest and most obvious out of the way, r/furry is one of the largest furry subreddits that you can find. It has around 270,000 members as of the publication of this article and is predominantly used to share and discuss furry art. Then there is r/fursuit, with about 20,000 members, it’s a community for furries to share and discuss their fursuits. If you’re looking for something a little more explicit, one of the biggest furry porn subreddits is r/yiff, where around 300,000 members can share their furry porn. If you’re struggling to find suitable subreddits to post to, consider checking out this article on the best reddit communities for furries for some inspiration.

Twitter: While its often joked that twitter is just a toxic cesspit, you can find some really loveable people on there. Some good users to follow if you’re looking for safe furry communities on twitter would firstly have to be Furry Valley. They have their own Discord server and telegram if that tickles your fancy. They have a big gaming community under their belt as well, more specifically Animal Crossing, Pokemon and Rainbow Six Siege. Also, Furs Of Color serves a more specific purpose because, as you could probably guess, it’s a community for furries who are also people of color. It does the same thing as pretty much any twitter community, but is specifically inclusive of people of color.

VRChat: With the growing popularity of VTubers, this is an exciting one to discuss because things start to get really interesting. Although VRChat is less accessible to those who don’t have a PC and such, some of the communities on this game are just buzzing with personality. Firstly, there is TailBass which is a virtual dance coordination group that has live furry DJs playing in VRChat. If that isn’t brilliant enough, they created an event called HexFurryfest, which is a virtual furry rave that takes place two times a year. There’s also RubberDragonLabs which a bit more on the NSFW side of VRChat as its a community centered around the artwork of Jackie Demon who depicts a rubber species of furry, in… let’s just say… compromising positions.

Now go and join a furry community and explore this beautiful, furry world!

If you’ve been hanging out online at all in the past few months, you probably know that TikTok is a new app that’s taken social media by storm. What started as a simple video-sharing app has quickly grown into a full-blown phenomenon, with users uploading and watching videos on their phones like never before. On top of it all, the popularity of TikTok among people who love animals or what we commonly refer to as furries have only led to further growth in this niche. So now you might be wondering just what is Furry TikTok and how does it work? Read on for more details about this exciting new social media platform and how you can get involved if you have an affinity for animals of the furry kind…

What Is TikTok?

For those of you who have been living under a rock for the better part of 4 years, TikTok is an app that allows users to make and share videos with a variety of different themes. The content can be anything from comedy, to musical performances, to short skits and so much more, although the app does have some strict rules about what content can be posted, for reasons we’ll get into later. TikTok also allows users to connect with one another through comments and even share content with their friends on other social media platforms.

With its extremely addictive “For You” page system and being one of the most used apps let alone social media platforms in the world right now, TikTok has given birth to millions of sub-communities within the broader TikTok community. One of these communities happens to be the furry fandom which has now found itself a pretty comfortable home on TikTok.

So, what is Furry TikTok and how does it work?

What Is A Furry?

If you don’t know what TikTok is, there’s a pretty good chance you have no idea what a furry is and that’s not a problem at all. Furries are people who have an interest in fictional anthropomorphic animals or rather fictional animals that bear human characteristics such as the ability to talk or to walk on two feet. Furry characters can actually be seen dotted around pop culture quite frequently such as in basically the entirety of Zootopia or maybe the more recent 2022 release, The Bad Guys.

"The artists had amazing response times and were constantly updating me on my piece" Clara Draw My Fursona How To Use Furry TikTok

Furry TikTok refers to any content on TikTok featuring furries. Now, if you’re a member of the furry fandom then you know, that’s pretty broad and vague and that’s because Furry TikTok even has sub-communities within the sub-community itself. This ranges from fursuiting to furry art to furry hypnosis.

If you’re looking to become a Furry TikTok creator, the best way to use Furry TikTok is to create a profile and then post content that reflects what furry is all about. This can be anything from a video expressing your own feelings about being a furry to a music video featuring your favorite furry-themed song. You can also post photos and other visuals, as well as texts like poems or even comics. You can also use Furry TikTok to connect with and meet other people who share your interests. The easiest way to do this is to comment on other videos, especially those that are related to furry. When you comment, make sure that it’s a positive, friendly message because this will be the first thing the person sees when they go to view your video. Also, make sure to tag your video with relevant hashtags. No other furries are going to find your content if you aren’t letting TikTok know with hashtags the kind of content you are making, hashtags like #furry or #furtok will help you draw some attention to your page.

The Furry Community On TikTok

The furry community is one of the biggest and most active communities on TikTok, with millions of furries sharing their art, videos, and other content on the app every day. While not everybody who uses TikTok is a furry (some just like to use the app as a fun way to pass the time), a large number of users are furries, making it a great place to find people who share your interests. Furry is a subculture that has been around for decades, and it’s one that can include anybody who is interested in anthropomorphism, the belief that human and non-human animals can be given human traits. This can include a wide variety of things, like dressing up in costumes that resemble animals, as well as a strong interest in animals and nature in general. If you’re a furry, TikTok is a great way to connect with others who share this interest. You can find furry communities on the app by searching for hashtags like #furry, #furrytiktok, and so on. There are also some official TikTok furry groups that you can join.

You can expect to find an extremely wide variety of content with everything from fursuit tutorials to furry animations to skits performed in fursuits.

Some Furry TikTok Creators You Should Be Aware Of

Considering we’re covering all this information about Furry TikTok, it’s also worth covering some Furry TikTok content creators that we think you should be aware of. Either because we think they make some great content or because they are just the most popular on the platform right now.

Miraibaby (Felix The Calico)

This is one of the more popular creators on the list, and they are actually also a fursuit maker as well as a Tiktokker. A lot of their TikToks are actually used as promotion for their Kemono fursuit business, but they do this in a funny little skit format.

Ballpitmutt (BALLPIT 🦠)

Ballpittmut is another fursuiting Tiktokker who makes skits and memes. However, on top of this, ballpitmutt does not shy away from throwing on the camera and doing the latest dance trend on Tiktok in their green dog fursuit head and paws.

Rubensmagiclab (Ruben)

Ruben is a furry artist and a fursuit maker who creates slightly different content from the previous two. Instead of skits and parodies, Ruben gives a much clearer insight into what it takes to make a fursuit and the intricacies of the fursuits you see a lot of furries wearing nowadays

Other Ways To Find Furry Friends On TikTok

If you’d like to meet and connect with other furries on TikTok but don’t want to comment on videos in the hopes that someone will respond, there are a few other options. TikTok also features group chats and direct messaging, making it easy to talk to other users and make new furry friends. You can also use TikTok to attend furry meetups. This can be a great way to meet people in your area that share your interests, and it doesn’t even have to be face-to-face. There are furry meetup groups on TikTok that organize online meetups where furries can hang out, chat, and even watch and comment on videos together.

Is Furry TikTok Safe?

There are major misconceptions about both the furry fandom and TikTok. For one, the furry fandom is generally a safe space as long as you are cautious about the people that you involve yourself with. Of course, there are weirdos and creeps but people like that can be found anywhere on the internet.

As well as this, TikTok is a very safe app, with a lot of thought and consideration put into the design of the platform to make sure that users are protected. TikTok also has a very strict set of rules in place. Users who violate these rules can have their accounts taken down, so it’s important to be aware of them. Because of the general safety of TikTok, Furry TikTok is a safe place for furries to connect and share their love for anthro animals. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when using the app. TikTok is a social media platform, so it’s best to be careful what you post. Avoid posting anything you wouldn’t want others to see, and if you’re feeling vulnerable and need to reach out to somebody, there are some great support and crisis lines you can call.

Instead of skits and parodies, Ruben gives a much clearer insight into what it takes to make a fursuit and the intricacies of the fursuits you see a lot of furries wearing nowadays.

      What Is Furry Hypnosis?

Furry hypnosis is a sub-genre of furry content that has recently seen a stark rise in popularity on TikTok which hypnotizes the viewer into something, whether this is to fall asleep or to believe they are a furry. It’s typically done in the style of your average ASMR video in which the speaker whispers into a particularly loud and noise-sensitive microphone and begins to assure you that you are becoming a furry. The hypnosis part of the video is usually achieved through repeating soothing phrases that constantly affirm the type of hypnosis the hypnotist is trying to achieve like “you’re sinking into a warm bath of sunlight, falling deeper and deeper into your sleep”, or something like that.

While this may just sound like normal hypnosis, there’s a catch. The hypnotist is usually a live, motion-captured fursona (now better known as Furry VTubers) who moves around and waves their hands calmingly, you know, hypnotist stuff. However, sometimes, the hypnotist is a pre-recorded video of a fursona playing over a separate ASMR audio, there isn’t a super rigid definition of furry hypnosis currently.

Within the sub-genre of furry hypnosis, there are further sub-sub-genres that attempt to achieve different things. As mentioned before, some may attempt to put the viewer to sleep but the thing most often associated with furry hypnosis is hypnosis that attempts to turn the viewer into a furry or an animal. They obviously cannot make any physical changes to the viewer’s body, but the aim is to give the viewer animal-like compulsions such as (in the case of a cat), licking themselves and meowing.

      Does Furry Hypnosis Work?

As crazy as that last sentence may sound to some of you reading this, it’s yet to be proven/disproven because of how much it varies from person to person. It seems that people who are more open to the possibility of hypnosis are a lot more susceptible to hypnosis working on them. Some have reported feeling actual changes to their mental state after viewing furry hypnotist content such as getting the craving for certain foods or the aforementioned compulsion to lick themselves clean. Of course, “just trust me bro” isn’t exactly empirical evidence but it’s definitely a super interesting insight into the power of suggestibility in the furry fandom.

      Who Performs Furry Hypnosis?

What probably also doesn’t help the legitimacy of furry hypnosis or hypnosis in general really is the lack of qualification required to proclaim that you are in fact a hypnotist. Literally anyone can set up a camera and a mic these days and make content. This is a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, content creation is more accessible than it has ever been in history and can be done as a reliable source of income but on the other hand, it makes creating content intended to exploit people’s gullibility much easier to not only do but monetize as well.

However, there isn’t really much harm that comes out of furry hypnosis, so whether or not a person is an actual hypnotist is irrelevant. In fact, a lot of the furry hypnosis videos that you can find on YouTube and TikTok are made more to relax the viewer like any other ASMR video than it is to turn them into an animal. Some would even argue there is no such thing as a “real hypnotist” because hypnosis isn’t an exact science that can be reliably performed from person to person.

Does It Have The Same Effects On Everyone?

We hate to rain on your parade but furry hypnosis does not work on everyone, in fact, it probably works on such a negligible, small population of people in the world, that it isn’t even worth considering how many people it affects. As mentioned before, hypnosis is so heavily reliant on the degree to which someone believes in it, so, to convince someone that may believe in hypnosis a little bit that they are in fact an animal and they now have the urge to make animal noises and behave like an animal would be a hard sell.

Having said that, it would seem that there are varying degrees of success with furry hypnosis. While some have experienced full-blown changes in behavior, others claim that for a few hours after the hypnosis they felt “different” as though they weren’t quite themselves. Others even attest to experiencing changes in their perception, even seeing other people as furries.

If you’re looking for a furry hypnotist content creator, your best bet is to look towards the YouTube channel furry asmr which seems to be a pioneer of sorts in the world of, as you could probably guess, furry ASMR. He has created over a hundred videos of varying lengths and has been consistently uploading since last year. His videos range from comforting cuddles ASMR to signing up for a furry convention ASMR. But most importantly he creates hypnosis videos as well. Other furry hypnosis channels include Darkwitt and Whispaw ASMR who make very similar content to furry asmr.

If you’re not in the mood for an hour-long investment of your time, there are also several furry TikTok pages that have recently been gaining some traction such as filththemutt which predominantly lipsyncs TikTok sounds to their fursona but has occasionally done brief furry hypnosis videos.

      Is All Furry ASMR Hypnosis?

Furry hypnosis actually only makes up a fraction of the furry ASMR content out there. Most furry ASMR content is made to comfort or soothe its listeners, as for hypnotizing the listener, you will probably struggle to find a great wealth of content because of how niche it is. With that said, pretty much all content creators who make furry hypnosis don’t do solely hypnosis videos but in fact do general furry ASMR and occasionally do furry hypnosis as well. Because there is such great overlap between hypnosis and ASMR it’s quite easy for these creators to pump out videos for basically nothing.

Considering there is a sexual stigma that plagues the furry fandom, it would be understandable if someone believed that there was some sort of sexual implication that came with furry hypnosis especially considering that erotic hypnosis actually exists.

If you don’t know, erotic hypnosis is a method of hypnosis used to increase sexual desires. What doesn’t help the case of furries is that, if you watch any of the furry ASMR videos mentioned above, it does always feel like there is some sort of inherently sexual undertone to it because of the intimate nature of the videos. Not to worry though, while it definitely isn’t devoid of sexual implications, most furry hypnosis has no intention of being sexual.

Should Furries Be Allowed Into Schools?

      2. Is Being A Furry A Sexual Thing?
      3. Is Furry A Gender?
      4. What Do Furries Even Do?

      6. Is It Safe For Kids To Be Furries?
      7. Should They Be Allowed Into Schools?
      8. Where Are Furries Most Common?
      What Are Furries?

There’s been a lot of buzz about furries in recent news and with all this commotion it’s worth clarifying what exactly a furry is.

Despite a lot of controversy and misconceptions pushed in mainstream media, a furry is just a person interested in fictional anthropomorphic animals. What that means is that they are interested in fictional animals that bear characteristics of humans, whether that be the ability to walk on two legs, the ability to speak English, wear human clothes, etc. At its core, it’s just a hobby or interest like any other. They are members of a greater community known as the “furry fandom”

Furries are also super involved in loads of different creative outlets. For example, a lot of furries are super into art and will draw what are known as fursonas which are cartoon, animal versions of people. Some of them are more interested in writing and will write expansive stories about their fursonas. Others make what are known as fursuits which are tangible, wearable versions of the fursonas you see online. A lot of these artsy furries even make a living out of their creative ability by selling their service to furries who aren’t as art savvy as themselves.

Is Being A Furry A Sexual Thing?

Despite all the stigmatizations and false information surrounding the furry fandom, being a furry is not inherently something sexual. Of course, there is no denying that there is definitely a side to the fandom that produces and consumes sexual furry content, but this is not reflective of the whole furry fandom.

It’s unfair to throw the whole fandom under the same blanket term of perverted and depraved because almost every fanbase on the planet, and I mean every, has an ugly side that the rest of the fandom prefers to sweep under the rug.

So in short, no, being a furry is not a sexual thing.

      Furry Art That Isn’t Sexual

      Is Furry A Gender?

Given that gender is a socially constructed ideology, more to do with the psychology of a person’s identity than it is to do with the sex assigned at birth, is it possible for someone to identify as a furry? While you may see people identifying as “fursexual”, claiming that their neopronouns are “fur / furself”, this doesn’t necessarily make it legitimately recognized as a gender. If anything, it delegitimizes the struggle of those who suffer from gender dysphoria and are actually non-binary as a result. This is not to imply that we shouldn’t collectively respect people’s gender identity, but there is a certain boundary that distinguishes between genuine gender politics and mocking gender altogether.

      What Do Furries Even Do?

If all it takes to be a furry is to be interested in cartoon animals, where did all these stigmas and stereotypes even come from? What do furries even do? For the most part, furries are part of online communities whether that be through Discord, Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, or whatever and they use this as a platform to share their interest. A large population of furries are super involved in the art community as well so furry communities give furry artists an opportunity to share their creative endeavors. This applies to all facets of creativity as well, be it music, art, or writing, these communities offer a safe space for furry-themed art to be shared. If your child is interested in the furry fandom, it is a great way for them to express their creative interests, it’s just about how you moderate where and how they are expressing it.

"The artists had amazing response times and were constantly updating me on my piece" Clara Draw My Fursona Can Kids Be Furries?

Given that, as we previously mentioned, being a furry (at face value) is just a hobby or interest, there is no reason that a kid cannot be a furry. In fact, a lot of furries attribute their interest in the furry fandom later in life to the media they consumed as a child and while it may not be direct there is definitely a correlation. While the average furry of a lot of furries is around 25 – 28 years old, the growing popularity of the fandom over the internet and the almost unrestricted internet access that children have in the modern age is leading to a high influx of much younger furries.

Is It Safe For Kids To Be Furries?

Now the question of whether or not it is safe for kids to be furries is a much trickier question to tackle. Given that the furry fandom relies so heavily on the internet for almost every facet of its functionality whether this is communicating with other furries, sharing art, promoting a service, or posting memes, everything is based entirely on the internet. This would mean that for a child to properly engage with the fandom, they would need borderline unrestricted access to the internet. While it may not be everyone, it goes without saying that there are dangerous people almost everywhere on the internet and it should be up to the parent of the child to moderate how their child is using the internet.

A parent shouldn’t be discouraging a child’s interests just because of their inability to control what their child is viewing on the internet. Like anything a child takes interest in, within reason, the parents should encourage the child to carry out this interest in a productive and helpful way.

You’ve likely seen headlines about the outrage at schools of children asking for litter boxes or children claiming that they self-identify as animals so let’s clear all this up. For one, there is no evidence that children in the US are even self-identifying as animals let alone letting this identity disrupt the learning environment of schools.

The same goes for the claims of students eating out of dog bowls or hissing in class. There is no evidence of this being a negligible problem in schools nor is there a need to even address this as such. What is more likely than this being the fault of the furry fandom, is that this is just children being children. It’s no secret that kids can be pretty stupid at times, so we shouldn’t be scolding a community that borderline has nothing to do with these imaginary issues but instead teaching children appropriate behavior in a classroom.

Oursaferschools makes a point of explaining that while the furry fandom isn’t explicitly harmful to children, it promotes an escape from reality which isn’t something that we should be pushing on to children who should first come to terms with the realities and certainties of life. This is certainly true to an extent. A lot of the appeal of the furry fandom derives from the fact that you can build this alternate personality and pretend to be someone that you are not. This is only reinforced by the fact that it is a predominantly online fandom and you can pretend to essentially be whoever you want behind a screen.

So, of course, furries should be allowed into school because there is nothing necessarily wrong with it. What we shouldn’t be promoting is delusion and the idea that personal desire trumps education.

      Where Are Furries Most Common?

However, not to get too political, it seems that this is an issue that mostly affects the US as a whopping 34% of furries come from the US. To put that into perspective, the next highest volume of furries comes from Canada which makes up about 16% of the furry fandom. So, this clearly isn’t an issue affecting the globe but is instead an issue exacerbated by ignorance of people not willing to learn what it means to be a furry.

Should Furries Be Allowed Into Schools?

          Can Kids Be Furries?

          What is Lemonbrat?

Lemonbrat is probably the biggest fursuit commissioning service out there. It’s a site that allows people who lack the skills and or materials to make fursuits of their own, to get their own fursuits made by professional fursuit makers. They do this through a whole review and design process which we will get into later, but as you could imagine, being the biggest site doing this, they’re pretty damn good at it. However, this article is going to try to give the most honest review of Lemonbrat possible, no pulling any punches.

          The Fursuit Process

Let’s start by discussing the process of starting to get your fursuit made before we get into anything else. To start, you need to get a quote. They do this by making you fill out an understandably extensive form where you declare what parts of the suit you want made, what you want the suit to look like, your name, postcode, and in the end it should tell you approximately what your suit should cost. Make sure if you are filling this out that you are extremely detailed and clear about what you want, because after all, you will be spending a few grand on this and it would be pretty sad if you finally got your suit and something was just completely wrong.

Anyway, after 3-4 days they should get back to your initial quote with a response via email where they will give you a more specific estimation of the cost of the suit according to the details you entered as well as the parts of the suit you want made, but this price is not final. Whatever price they give you in that email, you should be prepared to pay a bit more. In response to this email you can clarify whether you want to go through with the production of the fursuit or if you want to add or remove items from the suit as a result of the cost.

This is where things get a little bit iffy because they don’t really disclose this earlier in the process but they ask you to buy a $70 reference of the suit if you want to continue making the suit regardless of whether or not you have a good reference. They claim that having the reference in their own style of art is a “useful tool” which is honestly completely believable but it’s just a little misleading when they don’t make any mention of that cost clearly earlier on.

          Not A Lemonbrat Fursuit

Once you have got the reference sheet and it is clear what you want your suit to look like, you can move on to payments and sending measurements over, and in all fairness, they are super reasonable with financing. You obviously don’t have to pay all of the money up front but they do ask for a deposit ⅓ the cost of the suit before they can consider construction of the suit. From there, you can continue to pay for the suit in monthly installments and even if you’re behind on a month, if you just notify them and say you can’t afford the installment for the month, they are pretty cool about you paying it the next month. However, if you are looking to get a refund on your suit, Lemonbrat automatically keep 25% of the money and you can only get the refund within the window of time they are constructing the suit.

Only once the suit is paid for in full does the construction of your suit begin which is pretty reasonable considering that there are several suits likely ahead of yours that have been fully paid for which means they have to take priority. Also things like not responding to their emails, not sending measurements or just generally not being cooperative can delay your suit even further. Once they do begin making it though they will keep in touch and send you pictures of how this suit is coming along so verify whether or not you are happy with it. And then hey presto! Your suit is made and they’ll ship it over to you.

So, overall aside from obscuring the reference sheet thing which has its justifications, it’s a pretty standard commissioning service just a little more expensive than most.

Fursuits in general tend to be pretty expensive, so if you’re looking to buy one you should definitely make sure you have the money to do so. Fursuits aren’t a necessity, you don’t need one to be considered a furry, so if you can’t afford it, don’t bother buying some terrible cheap alternative, the price is worth it. If you want to learn more about general fursuit pricing look here, otherwise, let’s discuss Lemonbrat’s pricing.

Their pricing is broken down depending on what part of the suit you want. Most of the expense is going to come from the torso of the suit and the head of the suit. Each of these will probably cost you upwards of $2000 and while that may sound like an outrageous amount of money to pay for a suit, that’s pretty much what you’d get charged for it regardless. You could probably understand why the head costs so much, it’s the most detailed part of the suit and requires the widest variety of materials and is also the most desirable piece of the suit, so people are willing to pay that kind of money. However, why does the body suit cost so much money? What other expenses are there? Well, let’s go through the pricing.

Firstly, the base value of the suit immediately depends on what kind of suit you want. Do you want a plantigrade suit, or a digitigrade suit? What is the difference? Well a digitigrade suit has extra padding around the thighs to make them look more animal like and will cost you around $1950 as a result. Plantigrade suits don’t have this padding and so are quite a bit cheaper and will cost you about $1650. Then, if you want a feminine bust for your suit, that will cost an additional $300, not to mention if you want masculine muscles that will cost you another additional $500. They also charge extra for extensive spots, stripes or general patterns, typically this comes at about an extra $1000, but if you’re adamant on going crazy with these patterns it can cost up to an additional $4000.

          Extra Tidbits

If you’re looking to get a tail on your fursuit, on average, Lemonbrat charge around $200 for a tail depending on the length and the kind of tail you want. If you want a tuft to knee length tail, that’ll be your cheapest option at around $145, but if you’re looking to get a tail closer to the ankle region then you’re looking to pay upwards of $250. However, if you want to go all in and want a tail that drags, then you’ll probably be paying upwards of an additional $350.

          Are Lemonbrat Suits Good Quality?

Now we arrive at what is probably the most important question about this site. Is all this money even worth it? It’s a hard question to answer, because people seem to have vastly different experiences with their orders from Lemonbrat. For some, the quality of the suits are great, they’re durable, they’re well fitting and they are spot on to the original vision for the suit. Others however have complained that the suit was falling apart at the seams, some suggesting that they have pushed for quantity instead of quality in recent years. This customer even recalls the artists getting the species completely wrong and making their fursuit look more like a mouse than a cat, as well as getting the tail wrong and getting the length of the suit wrong.

Fitting seems to be the most common complaint among the bad reviews by its customers. Sometimes the suit is too long or the head is too big, stuff like that that is hard to rectify as the suit has already been completed. One customer also recalls wrong colors being used and details they explicitly asked for being overlooked. Having said that, many people on this reddit thread also describe their pleasant experiences with Lemonbrat and how happy they were with the final product of their suit. Overall though, for the sake of accessibility and convenience it looks like you’d have to sacrifice a bit of quality.

          What Is A Fursuit?

As Wikipedia defines it, Fursuits are custom-made animal costumes typically owned by members of the furry fandom, better known as furries. People who avidly wear fursuits are known as fursuiters.

The whole idea is that the fursuit is supposed to represent a fursona, which is a whole other can of worms. However, in short, a fursona is a personalized animal character that is usually made to represent a person or personality. In a way, they are almost like an alter ego, and these fursuits are a tangible, wearable version of these alter egos. The suits essentially act as an escape for furries, a way for them to be themselves without facing judgment from others.

What Do I Need To Make A Fursuit?

If owning a fursuit of your own is something that has piqued your interest and you’ve quickly realized that you aren’t willing to pay an arm and a leg for it, a cheaper option for the more creative bunch is to make your very own fursuit. But to start that, you’re going to need some supplies first, so we’ll run you through the essentials for your first fursuit.

            Foam

This is likely one of the most important parts of the suit as it makes up 90% of the suit and acts as the foundation of the whole thing. Your best bet is to order high-density upholstery foam just to make your suit as sturdy as possible.

            Hot Glue Gun

This is what will be used to stick the fur of the suit onto the foundation of the suit, so it’s important that you have some quality adhesive that isn’t just going to either become brittle and not stick or melt away easily.

            Faux Fur

Given the name, this is likely the most obvious on the list and is essential to making the suit.

            Plastic Wrap & Duct Tape

It’s unlikely you’ll be able to stick the fur straight onto the foam of the suit as the glues probably won’t take to the foam, so, to combat this you can use plastic wrap and duct tape. Glue is much more likely to take to the non-sticky side of duct tape and therefore acts as a much better base.

            Thread & Needle Kit

The thread and needle kit will be used to sew sections of the fur that you cut out together.

            Electric Razor

As strange as this may sound, you’ll likely need to shave your fursuit once you have finished it. This is because the raw faux fur is going to be long and slightly messy, so to make it more manageable and sometimes to even style it, you can shave it down with an electric razor.

            Vinyl Fabric

As you might have been able to imagine, the material that makes up the pads on the paws is going to be different from the fur on the rest of the suit. This material just so happens to be vinyl fabric which is a lot smoother and a lot more coarse than the fur used on the suit in contrast.

            Zipper

Believe it or not, you’re going to need a way of getting in and out of the suit, and the best way of going about that is probably a zipper. They’re easy to use and easy to manage and are therefore a great option for making a fursuit.

            Safety Pins

This is what you can use to hold a suit together while hot glue is cooling on certain pieces.

            Muslin

This is a thin fabric material that is used to make the torso of the suit. The fur is layered over it to make it appear more like a fursuit.

How Much Does It Cost To Make A Fursuit?

If you’ve done any research on getting a fursuit then you know it’s no secret at all that you have to break the bank if you want to get your hands on a half-decent fursuit and they can cost you upwards of $4000. So, how much would it cost to make it yourself you ask? With all the materials required, it can cost anywhere in the ballpark of $500 to $1000. A lot of what you’re paying for when buying a fursuit is the dedication of time and skill of the artist rather than the cost of materials themselves, although that is a big factor.

Now, let’s start making this fursuit.

How To Make A Fursuit Head

Let’s start with what is probably the most integral part of the suit, the head.

To start making the head you’re going to want to wrap a sheet of foam all the way around your head so that it fits relatively loosely and cut away any excess that wraps further around. Now, glue the two ends of the foam together with a hot glue gun to form a cylinder around your head. This is going to act as the fit of your fursuit head.

Then, pinch the top of the cylinder to almost form a foam crown at the top of your head and cut it away so that you can glue a snug seal at the top.

You might need a second person for this part but you’re going to want to draw out eyeholes to cut out that resemble the shape of eyes you would like. Now begin to layer foam on the brow of the head or wherever necessary to bulk it up. Remember, you’re going to layer fur over this, so make sure you have the shape of your head correct. Cut out some conical ear shapes from the foam and start gluing them to the top of your suit or wherever you want the ears to go.

This part is a little more difficult and that is creating the muzzle of the had. For this, you’re going to need to take a fairly long (6 – 12 inches) piece of foam and fold about 2 inches back from the shorter side of the sheet and glue it down. While keeping that indentation folded, fold the whole piece of foam in half from the longer side of the sheet to the other. Glue this to the face of your fursuit head where the snout would go. Look at the shape of your animal’s muzzle and begin layering foam over and underneath this snout to create an actual muzzle and a nose.

Begin to layer foam on either side of the muzzle to create cheeks to finish the foam base of your fursuit head.

Once you are happy with the foundation of your fursuit head begin to wrap it tightly in plastic wrap so that there are practically no air bubbles. Then duct tape over the sections of the suit that you are going to place fur on.

Cut away each section of duct tape and begin to measure it against your fur so that you can have an exact cut out of the shape of fur you will need to paste onto the head. Once you have the cutouts of fur ready, being to sew them together over the head to create what resembles a mask over the foam. Now, glue the mask firmly to the head of the suit.

All that’s left to do now is to shave away the excess fur and cut out a nose for your fursuit head out of felt or any material of your choice.

How To Make A Fursuit Body

Making a body for your fursuit can be daunting because it’s the biggest part of your suit, but as long as you are researching it and going about it with relative care, it’s pretty easy. To start, it would help you have a sewing machine as it will make putting the suit together a lot easier, but not to worry if you don’t own one as it can be sewn together by hand as well.

Some people like to make a test pattern before they start applying the pattern of their suit straight onto the suit. This is done by getting a jumpsuit of some sort that comes with measurements and modeling your muslin after this. Cut out strips of muslin to create a front and back that you will be able to sew together, leaving a cut for you to get in and out of the suit. Remember when sizing the suit, you’ll likely want the fursuit you be a bit more fitted than a jumpsuit or onesie which is typically quite baggy.

Decide whether you would like the zipper to go onto the front or back of the suit and once you have made that decision just safely pin together the opening until it’s time to add the zipper.

If you intend on adding padding to the body of your suit you can use masking tape on the areas you would like to pad to not only remind yourself of where the padding will go but also to give the padding something to take to when it is plastered on.

Now, once the muslin base of your suit is ready, begin to use a marker to start outlining the areas you would like the fur of your suit to go on to and what color you would like where. Now, begin to cut your pieces of fur to match the shape of the outlines you have drawn and begin to sew the fur to the suit. Make when going over the seams of the muslin you have sewn together so as to not tamper with the fitting you arranged for the suit.

Now let’s install your zipper. Be sure to get a larger-toothed zipper as zippers with smaller teeth can create complications such as fur getting stuck in them, the zipper not zipping smoothly, and a whole list of other complications. Once you have your zipper, place it on the inside of your suit where you initially left an opening for the zipper. Sew up any excess space below the zipper that you no longer need and begin to sew the zipper to the inside of the suit, making sure to avoid getting fur caught in it. You can look to this tutorial for more details on installing a zipper.

Once that’s complete, your fursuit body should be complete!

              How To Make Fursuit Hands

The following two parts of the suit aren’t similar at all, so if you are unsure about how to make one, don’t use guesswork to make it. Apart from that, it’s relatively easy. To start making the hands of your fursuit, draw an outline of your fursona’s paw around your own hand on a piece of card. Leave a lot of room around your hand as you don’t want the paw to just about fit onto your hand.

Once you have the outline drawn onto a piece of card, use this card cutout to cut out a piece of the fur with the same dimensions. You’re going to want to do this four times, twice for each hand, as you’re going to sew these 2 pieces together. Do not sew the opening at the wrists together as this is how

Once the pieces of the hand are sewn together, begin to draw outlines of a paw pad onto your vinyl fabric. Do this twice over, once for each hand, and once you are ready, begin to hot glue the vinyl fabric onto the front of your paws.

That should now be your fursuit paws complete.

              How To Make Fursuit Feet

Finally, the feet of your fursuit, without them, how else are you supposed to walk around at a furry con? So, let’s get started.

Start by cutting out an outline of a paw that you could fit your foot into with a reasonable amount of space  Do this twice, once for each foot.

Also, for making the feet, you’re going to need a pair of shoes that fit you comfortably and are willing to sacrifice as well as some thicker foam, preferably 5 – 6 inches in thickness as this is what your foot is going to go into. Begin to cut out the shape of the paw that you just drew into the thicker foam.

Now, this is going to sound weird, but you know those two thicker pieces of foam you just cut out, you’re going to want to cut them in half horizontally (not from the toe to the heel). Then, stick your shoes to the center of the thinner piece of foam you originally cut out. It’s all going to make sense soon I promise.

Begin to cut away foam from the heel half of the thicker foam until you have two holes in it. One should allow you to put your foot into the shoe, the other should allow the front half of the shoe to protrude out from the foam. Glue this down to the thin layer of foam and glue the padding at the top of the shoe to the shoe itself.

In the toe half of the foot, begin to cut away at the bottom of it until it can fit snugly over the front half of the shoe. Do not cut a hole in the top of it at all, there is no need to, and begin to glue it down to the thin layer of foam so that you now have a whole paw.

You can now start to carve away at the foam so that it is rounder and does a better job of resembling a paw. Do this a second time so that you have two foam bases for your paws.

Because the paws are oddly shaped it is sometimes hard to get the fur to cover certain parts of it, so cut out as many pieces of fur as necessary to cover the entire paw. Begin to glue the fur to the paws until the top is completely covered.

You can choose to leave the bottom blank or you can even put two more sets of paw prints on them, that is completely up to you. Apart from that, your fursuit should be complete.

This is done by getting a that comes with measurements and modeling your muslin after this.

It’s all going to make sense soon I promise

What Are Furry Ears & Why Are They So Popular?

              Mon 3 Oct 2022 - 03:50

Xege Kheiru, Writer, Furry 03 Oct 2022 What Are Furry Ears?

Furry Fandom or not, there’s a good chance you’ve seen someone wearing a pair of furry ears. Furry ears refer to a headband that has a pair of animal ears on them, most often a cat . They can be seen everywhere in pop culture from League of Legends skins to a pair of Razer headphones, furry ears have soared in popularity in recent years, but why?

                Where Did They Come From?

Although there is no objective timeline for the popularity of furry ears, it would seem that they began as cute, innocent accessories that anyone could wear. Just a fun little customization to a standard headband. I couldn’t tell you when the first pair of furry ears were made but what I can tell you is there was no synonymy with the furry fandom when it was made and there isn’t really today. If they are literally called furry ears, how is this? This is probably because furry ears is a more general term for animal ear headbands which are more often than not a pair of cat ears.

Why Are They So Popular Right Now?

In recent years there seems to be a fascination with if not fetishization of girls wearing furry ears. This is likely due to the meteoric rise of the Neko sub-genre of anime which revolves around girls who are part cat, part human. They are mostly human, however, mostly ever sporting the ears and the tail of a cat. Nonetheless, the stories of catgirls have been around since the 1700s, yet they only recently picked up some serious traction and this has spread into almost every facet of Western pop culture, from your favorite video game characters to twitch streamers to strange animal crossing-themed animations that you probably shouldn’t watch.

Although this is just hypothesizing, it is likely that this is what has led us to today where furry ears aren’t too uncommon and actually have little to do with the furry fandom, because its origins are not rooted in the furry fandom.

If you are extremely panicked by the idea of being labeled a furry, then do not fear as wearing a pair of furry ears doesn’t automatically make you a furry, but it sure does make you an extremely suspicious culprit (just kidding). Being a furry isn’t some quality that is immediately achieved if you do a certain thing, often “furry” is a self-proclaimed title, rather than something that people say you are. What Are Fursuits?

If you’re a furry or you know anything about the furry fandom then you probably know what a fursuit is, but just in case you don’t here’s a brief explanation. Fursuits are custom-made animal costumes, sometimes full body, sometimes partial, worn by furries that represent their fursona. Much like a cosplayer, furries will dress up in these suits when attending things like furry conventions and meetups to show off their work. A lot of fursuiters even make their suits themselves and therefore have even more reason to show off their hard work. The best comparison I can make for someone who has no clue what a fursuit is would have to be those mascots that come out and dance during NFL games. Imagine those, but people spend weeks, sometimes even months, making it themselves to suit their every creative desire.

How Much Is The Average Fursuit?

As you could imagine when it comes to something so labor intensive, not everyone has the time nor the know-how to make one themself, and therefore the people who can and do make fursuits drive a big price tag for their work. The cost of a fursuit can vary widely depending on a lot of factors such as the type of suit you want, what parts of the suit you want, what details you want to be added to the suit, etc. The most expensive fursuit sold was priced at around $23,000.

However, that’s an unrealistic price for most people and on average a fursuit can cost anywhere between $3000 and $4000. While that does sound like a lot you have to consider that you are paying not only for the supplies to make them but the time it takes to make them as well as the patience and skill to make them.

To the untrained eye, a digitigrade fursuit may just look like any other fursuit, but I can assure you that there is a difference. A digitigrade fursuit refers to a fursuit that has padding in the thighs and feet. This is to make the suit look more animal-like as it makes the wearer look like they are standing on just their digits. The name comes from the word digitigrade which literally refers to animals that walk on their toes. This trait of legs can be seen in animals like canines, felines, and even some dinosaurs.

As well as this, the hands of the suit are typically made puffier to resemble the paws of an animal just like the feet. In essence, the point of a digitigrade suit is to bare the most similarities with an animal while remaining slightly cartoonish.

It’s a super cool trick that really brings a suit to life and makes it stand out from all the other suits out there.

How Much Is A Digitigrade Fursuit?

As cool as digitigrade suits are, all that extra padding comes at a cost. This padding means that more foam has to be put into the suit which makes it significantly more expensive than a standard fursuit. If you’re buying a digitigrade fursuit you can expect to be paying about an additional $500 – $1000 so in total around $5000 when buying with sites like Lemonbrat.

All hope is not lost though. Sites like koshkafursuits.com start their pricing at around $2400 for digitigrade suits and while it is likely to go up a lot from that, it is nowhere near $5000.

What’s The Difference Between Digitigrade and Plantigrade Fursuits?

Now that we understand what a digitigrade fursuit is, there’s a chance you may have also heard of a plantigrade fursuit. At first glance, you may think the name is in reference possible to the eco-friendly nature of the suit or maybe it’s a bio-degradable suit. Both are wrong, it has nothing to do with plants or the environment.

Plantigrade suits are essentially the opposite of digitigrade suits, the name similarly deriving from the word plantigrade which refers to mammals that walk on their whole foot as opposed to just their toes. This is a trait that can be seen in humans, any primate, kangaroos, rabbits, and others. This is important as most fursuits are actually plantigrade suits. This just means that they are an outline of the person covered in fur, no extra padding or adjustments made to bear similarities to an animal. This also makes it one of the most affordable full-body suits that you can buy if you are looking to buy a fursuit.

Where Can I Buy A Digitigrade Fursuit?

Any fursuit maker that offers full-body suits very likely offers digitigrade suits, but to save you the hassle of searching we’ve compiled a list of the best places for you to get your very own digitigrade fursuit.

                  Lemonbrat

The aforementioned Lemonbrat is probably the biggest seller in the fursuit marketplace. Although their prices aren’t the most affordable, they are the most reliable and easiest to work with out of any fursuit provider you will find out there. They also cater to almost every niche and this includes digitigrade fursuits.

                  Koshkafursuits

This is yet another site we previously mentioned but it is worth reiterating that they are an affordable seller that actually offers digitigrade fursuits. It’s hard enough to come by a fursuit seller, so to tick all the boxes of being a fursuit seller, an affordable fursuit seller, and a digitigrade fursuit seller is too good to pass up.

                  Etsy

While this isn’t traditionally a fursuit-selling site, they have definitely come into their own as a platform for fursuit makers to offer their service to the fandom. Etsy has some super talented artists on here including some who can make you a digitigrade fursuit and this way you can ensure that 100% of the profits are actually going to the maker of the fursuit.

                  The Dealer’s Den

Unlike the previous sites on this short list, The Dealer’s Den doesn’t actually allow you to make commissions. The Dealer’s Den is instead a marketplace for users to sell their pre-owned fursuits. However, in these many fursuits, you will very likely be able to find a digitigrade fursuit.

Fursuits don’t just stop at plantigrade and digitigrade though, there are several other types of fursuits that you can find. For example, there are quad-suits. These are suits that are designed to enable their wearer to walk around on all fours. These are probably one of the less common fursuits you’ll see but they for sure exist.

As well as this there are also unguligrade suits which make the suit resemble that of a hoofed animal like a horse or a rhino. This is achieved by making the hands and feet of the suit a lot more cylindrical and flatter at the sole.

                  What Was The First Fursuit?

It’s safe to say that fursuiting has been around for a while, whether the suits have been digitigrade, plantigrade, protogen, or whatever, but when was the very first fursuit made? Believe it or not, the first “fursuit” (or concept of it) dates as far back as 1947! This was a German Sheperd suit that appeared in Edwin Corle’s book Three Ways To Mecca and played a pivotal role in the novel.

Okay, but you’re not satisfied with that, you want when the very first physical fursuit was made. This dates about 40 years after Edwin Corle’s book, at the first Confurence: Confuerence 0 in 1989. There, appeared the former Disney Mascot wearer Robert Hill in a fursuit based on the character Hilda the Bambioid.

What Other Types Of Fursuits Are There?

Furry vs Anthro: What’s The Difference?

                      Tue 20 Sep 2022 - 06:16

Furry vs Anthro: What’s The Difference? Xege Kheiru, Writer, Furry 20 Sep 2022 Ah yes, the question that has left our greatest minds scratching their heads in confusion as they try to solve what appears to be an almost unsolvable puzzle, what is the difference between Furry and Anthro?

All jokes aside, if you’re new to the furry fandom you might have heard the term anthro before and if you know anything about them, you are likely confused by the need for the term furry if anthro already exists.

                        What Is Anthro?

For those who are unaware, anthro derives from the word anthropomorphism and refers to the attribution of human characteristics to an animal. It gets thrown around a lot in the fandom and it always feels unclear what people are referring to when they say it. Sometimes people use it to refer to a fursona like “that’s cool anthro art” and it’s even been used to describe furries. The thing is, if we are looking at the exact definition of each word, they technically shouldn’t be used interchangeably.

Where Did The Word Anthro Come From?

The term anthro likely derives from the term anthropomorphism meaning “the attribution of human characteristics or behavior to a God, animal or object” (according to Oxford Languages). It derives from an ancient Greek term anthrōpmorphos, anthrōp meaning “human being” and morphos meaning, well… morphous. It’s hard to date when the term Anthro was coined in the context of anthropomorphic creatures but if anthropomorphism dates back as far as ancient Greece it must be some indication.

This is not to be confused with the term anthropology which refers to the “study of human societies and cultures and their development” or rather the study of what makes humans humans.

                          What Is A Furry?

While we do have a whole article dedicated to explaining what they are and a brief history of them, we’ll give you a quick summary anyway.

Furries are people who are interested in or fascinated by cartoon animals. This interest is often expressed through the creation of what is known as a fursona. Fursonas are anthropomorphic,  cartoon animals, made to in some way, shape or form resemble its creator or a desire of theirs. Not all furries have a fursona but this doesn’t mean that they are not a furry, they may not be interested in making one or may justin ot have the time or money to make one or have one made for them. A bit of an oversimplification, I’ll admit, but this is just for the sake of wrapping your head around what each thing is.

Where Did The Word Furry Come From?

In contrast to anthro, we actually have a lot more information about the etymology of the term furry and its history. For one, it is thought to have originated from a science convention in 1980, however the actual fandom predates the name itself, finding its roots in the 1970s underground comix movement which was a provocative comic publication that would put out explicit comics of animals that resembled humans.

However the term “furry” and “furry fandom” wasn’t being used until around 1983 in fanzine but by 1990 had risen to popularity and became the standard name of the fandom. So in short, the term anthro probably predates the term furry.

Anthro is a word used to categorize or describe animals that are given human-like qualities. This is why you don’t really see many monkey fursonas as monkeys are already kind of human-like by nature. However, furry is a much broader term used to describe people interested in anthro art and cartoon animals in general. If I were to describe someone who is overly enthusiastic about Universal Pictures’ The Bad Guys, I would likely describe them as a furry, chances are I wouldn’t describe them as an anthro.

If you were to google fursuit, you’d likely be met with a bunch of images of actual people in actual wolf suits. Now try googling anthro suits. If you can’t be bothered to do that I’ll just tell you now, you’re probably going to see almost the opposite of a fursuit. You’ll be met with a bunch of drawings of animals in human suits (like a 3 piece suit, not a suit that makes them look like a human, although that is the intention). The point is, furry and anthro do not mean the same thing. One is used to describe a group of people and the other is what those people are a fan of.

How Do I Become A Furry?

Becoming a furry isn’t some phase of transformation that you can achieve by doing the secret jutsus, it’s more something a person identifies as. If you just say “I’m a furry”, then hey presto, you are now a furry, how you express this is completely up to you. Some furries are a lot more closeted and private about being a furry, operating under different pseudonyms and being careful not to tie their name to their fursona. Others, however, wear it on their chest loud and proud, going to conventions with personal badges of their fursona.

                          Can I Become An Anthro?

Becoming an anthro is not really something you can do, it doesn’t make any sense. Unless you are referring to literally turning part animal, it is more likely what you mean to say is you want to become a furry or someone is a furry. An anthro is more used to describe the characters that furries are interested in, the things that make furries furries.

                          Does The Difference Matter?

However, does it really matter at the end of the day? While this article does come across as a very “pushing my glasses up the bridge of my nose” correction, it’s not super important that you distinguish the difference between the two. If you were to use one in place of the other in conversation with another furry, chances are, they’ll know what you’re talking about. This article is more for people looking to get into the fandom, who don’t quite understand what people are talking about when they say buzzwords like “anthro”, “protogen”, etc.
