Furry Crowdfunding Week in Review: 8-4-13
To Infinity, and possibly therapy, and beyond with Dirk Domingo and the Danger-Squad.
This week, a slick graphic novel from first-timer Duran Rivera, a sci-fi romp that throws a group of neurotic and ill-equipped misfits into space, pits them against villains with vastly more intelligent facial expressions, and possibly hungry, sentient planets, we’re not ruling that out.
And then a bunch of other stuff.
Dirk Domingo and the Danger-SquadTake one high-maintenance starship, and one high-maintenance starship captain. Add a crew that meets the Don Bluth Seal of Approval for dysfunctional diversity. Throw them all into a universe that would have the writers of Star Trek mutter, “that’s just a bit weird, isn’t it?” Blend well. Serve with ice and a twist of lemon. These are the challenges that threaten to crop up in Dirk Domingo and the Danger-Squad. Possibly without the lemon.
The author, Duran Rivera, launched his IGG to fund the first volume, a 50-pager, of Domingo and crew’s adventures. You may have seen of Rivera’s work–and, indeed, some of Domingo’s crew–on Deviant Art (and his DA gallery runs from doodles to high quality webcomic, there’s a range there, so check out his new and polished work on Blogspot.) Yes, it’s a first time project, but Rivera’s got a style that’s solid, a bit of the new Disney graphic novel look, a bit of the post-Ren and Stimpy vibe, and, yes, a bit of the Bluth. It’s hard not to compare to Titan AE, so I’m glad that Rivera mentions some Bluthian influence. If it’s a first-time project, it’s a strong one.
DD&DS is an adventure/comedy/sci-fi, one that leads with a strong, if unhinged, cast of characters–a captain with poor impulse control, a fox gunner with “male chauvinist sex-crazed automaton pig” issues, and a pilot who’s clearly living the 80′s everyman action hero dream (the pilot’s my favorite so far, how can you not love a bear in a baseball cap with a manic grin and a blaster pistol? From a safe distance, I mean. Like, a half-mile away.)
They’re a diverse mess, and in a universe where everything from bizarre dimensional anomalies to getting clean drinking water is a massive challenge…well, good luck, Stallion and her crew, clearly you’re going to need it. Looking at some of the villains–and I’m talking about you, Dante–I’m not sure Domingo’s really up to it, charismatic gecko-thing he may be.
Dante: clearly the shiniest apple in this particular cartThe campaign’s pretty slick, with well-presented pledge levels and a solid “philosophy of design”-style campaign video–very polished, it’s kind of a pity this didn’t launch on Kickstarter. It’d be good to have a strong sense of who the characters are, what makes them important–it’s possible to get a sense of that with enough time on Google, but a good one-stop gallery would be a useful tool in moving the campaign forward. Still, Rivera’s goals are achievable and the product looks pretty solid, so here’s hoping for a five year mission for Dirk and his semicompetent companions. Good luck!

New ProjectsRoundscape: Adorevia (Adult. Ends: 9/10/2013)
An ambitious and smutty narrative-driven free-to-play 2D sprite game, looking for some floating decimal point between the hentai fandom and “Lord of the Rings.” (I don’t think Lord of the Rings had quite as many money shots. Is this a furry project? Not really, but poster Kaliyo tells me that we can expect furry companions and transformations. We’ll see.)
Hunter Clark’s Sublime Creatures (Art. Ends: 9/1/2013)
(NSFW) An artsy collection of animal-headed women, artistic nudes of mothers, mothers-to-be, and madonnas. (More about the beauty of the pregnant female body combined with animal symbolism than hybrids and anthros, but an interesting take on hybrids and lots of African carnivores.)
HouseBROKEN Clothing’s New Designs (Clothing/Costumes. Ends: 9/2/2013)
New additions to Housebroken‘s tee line–amost exclusively, sharp-dessed animal designs. (I’m wearing Pussy Enforcer on casual day this week.)

Woof Yorkers (Comics/Graphic Novels. Ends: 9/12/2013)

Werewolves of Predatory Moon (Film/Animation/Theater. Ends: 9/1/2013)
Indie low-budget “creature feature” with a pack of werewolves and a commitment to costumes rather than CGI. (I can’t imagine what their faux hair budget is. Check the Predatory Moon website for more images.)
No Signal (Video Games. Ends: 9/12/2013)
Open-world story-driven RPG: Somewhere there is a universe in peril, a universe of plumbers with hammers, ninja tortoises, and dark urban knights. And you must save this universe. Except that your brain has been yanked out and put into a stuffed bear. ($100,000 goal? Really?)

“Furry” is a stretch, but there’s a lot to like here for fans of giant, Tokyo-crushing armadillos.

Furfunding Week in Review: 7-28-13
Gotta Explicate them All: The World of Pokémon
Another quiet week in furry crowdfunding, must be the summer doldrums. A few fun new projects, but for me one of the highlights of the week was a pair of excellent podcast episodes from “Fear the Boot,” a thoughtful and long-running tabletop RPG podcast, focusing on Kickstarter strategies, pitfalls, tactics, and so on. Granted, it’s not the furry fandom, but certainly another colony in the great nation of geeks. If you’re thinking of starting a crowdfunding campaign, give them a listen (ep.1, ep.2). Anyway, today a long-overdue look at what must be the Audubon Society of Pokémon fansights.
And then a bunch of other stuff.
The World of PokémonPokémon: Rich world, but aimed solidly at a younger crowd. In his pitch video, author Joshua Dunlop talks about a view of the…uh…Pokéverse that has matured with its older fans: a rich interactive website that looks at the world of Pokémon like a nature documentary, National Geographic, or travel guide might, exhaustively and elegantly.
Ancient drawing of a Charizard“The World of Pokémon” cracks open every aspect of Pokémon with an almost academic fervor, looking at regional histories, gyms and trainers, technology, the “why” of the Pokémon league, and some artistic extrapolations into religion, ancient history, architecture, wars and lost empires…and the art we see in the KS is impressive, both professional and diverse in style, and the long-term/stretch goals–weekly newscasts from the Pokémon world, professionally-produced pokémon calls, soundtrack, webcomic…it’s an ambitious project.
An ambitious and accredited project! Dunlop’s staff includes students of zoology and biology, composers and sound designers, entertainment professionals…and strangely, more theater people than you can shake a stick at, but maybe you have to be a little insane to take a project of this scope on without corporate backing, and theater people generally qualify.
Is this a viable project? It’s hard to say. Pokémon’s star seems to be setting somewhat, it’s not the international craze it once was–though the games are still doing well for Nintendo, that’s not the same as a base of sustainable support for an ad-driven multimedia project that doesn’t directly feed into the games. And thusfar, the Kickstarter support has not made a deep dent in the campaign’s ambitious goal, which may or may not be meaningful given the peaks-and-valleys shape of most KS pledge patterns. Regardless, the World of Pokémon campaign is an excellent read and an exciting project.

Furfunding Week in Review: 7-21-13
Rodents in Space: Of Mice and Madness presents Tails from Out There
The midsummer heat seems to have made the two big engines of the crowdfunding world run slow, not a lot of furry projects on KS or IGG–though I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least mention “Room Party,” a beer-and-pretzels card game about cons and party-crashers, but with the star-power of Blotch and Sofawolf Press behind it, it feels a little redundant! So a little quiet time this Sunday with a sweet little comic/graphic novel in the works, “Tails from Out There.”
And then a bunch of other stuff.
Of Mice and Madness: Tails from Out There! We begin with a story of what might be the galaxy’s smallest bounty hunter, and his unlikely steed: the mouse Othello, and his trusty feline mount, Oliver, hopefully a little faster on his feet than, well, upstairs. The KS funds Of Mice and Madness‘s first major project, the five-issue comic adventure of this duo.
Othello falls squarely in the camp of “unlikely hero.” He’s dashing enough, for a mouse, about three inches of squeak in a cape, with a blaster at his hip that…well, I don’t know. Maybe they have really good batteries in the distant future. I can’t say Othello strikes terror, but that doesn’t seem to worry him that much. Looking at the art, I think the cat, Oliver, may well steal the show, his face is warm with a mix of warm loyalty and dim confusion.
I like where the team’s heart is. They’re ready to tell stories about character growth, of making choices that might be good, might be bad, of mice with big dreams that may not be cut out for the top 10 list in their quarter of the galaxy. I’m a comic buff, and even in the edgier mass-market series, characters tend to be larger than life. The indie comic world is where ambiguous characters, folk who aren’t predestined to great things or tragic failure, go. By and large, we aren’t going to be headliners in this life, not for more than a shining moment, and that makes a mouse like Othello more human than the cast of Fables or the latest super-mutant X-title spinoff.
If I was to criticize this project (and I don’t particularly want to, it’s so damned cute), it’s got a bit of an amateur edge, in several senses of the word (it literally means “one who loves”…). The video tells the story–artist has a passion for art, and like Tolkien blowing 500,000 words to give his Elven languages a place to live, the creative team really liked drawing mice, and started a comic series to build a mouse house. Is that bad? No, not a bit, it certainly worked for Tolkien! But there’s a youth to the Kickstarter–the video that focuses more on the creator’s story than the product; a price tag that seems too high for a comic series, compared to similar product; the graphic novel version only available at $250 (yeah, yeah, “Kickstarter isn’t a shopping site,” but really, it is…) and you can smell the “new code” smell on the website. If they don’t make goal, I hope the mice come back with a new coat of paint, because these are good mice, and they deserve to see print. Good luck, guys!

Furfunding Week in Review: 7-14-13
For the birds: Birdland and the Gothitropolis “Raven” line.
This week, two Kickstarters focusing on that rarest of birds, the anthropomorphic, well, bird. One’s a graphic novel set in Jazz Age NYC, the other’s six inches tall, plastic, and pissed off. But both have an attention to detail that’s nothing short of amazing. No more bird puns, I promise. Well, one.
And then a bunch of other stuff.
Birdland“Jazz, European Classical music and Baroque opera converge to help track a killer in this anthropomorphic 1930 New York City crime noir.” –Kickstarter
Imagine the lush detail, dense and full world realized in Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. A world so packed with energy, detail, and scope that it could only exist in black and white–adding color would simply be an overwhelming explosion, a riot that washed away the art. This is the rich, detailed B&W imagery of Shane Murphy’s Birdland, but with a sound track inspired by the fading strains of the Jazz Age, the Roaring Twenties, and a little classical/baroque.
Birdland unrolls a noir detective yarn about Rezno Piano, a man–well, a bird–trying to solve a series of deaths linked by a mysterious piece of music. Music and musical metaphor runs throughout the story, informed by jazz, classical, ballroom, opera…it’s unfortunate that Murphy didn’t include a soundtrack as a stretch goal! “Music,” the author says, “is arguably the main character of Birdland.”
Speaking of characters–it makes sense that in a story that’s about music should be told using a full aviary of herons, raves, doves, peacocks–a city full of birds, reveling in a world caught between the swirl of the 20s and the crash of the Great Depression.
The art of Birdland is amazingly detailed, and completly hand-drawn. I’m most strongly reminded of the illustrator David Macaulay, whose books Castle and Cathedral carried so much fine penwork you could read every line in the brick. The kickstarter has several completed pages from Birdland to look through, and it’s already made goal. Is it too early to be looking forward to pages from Issue #2?
Gothitropolis Raven (and other) Action FiguresTo paraphrase a dated commercial, “with a name like Gothitropolis, it has to be dark, brooding, and overwrought.” And we have achieved that goal. It’s just possible that anthro birds aren’t your thing–maybe you’d prefer Anubis or the minotaur lines and hippo/boar/elephant figures from the related series, “Seventh Kingdom.” But if you ARE of the feathery persuasion, and frustrated that you haven’t been able to fill your toy shelf with a collection of strapping, vaguely Egyptian bird warriors, well, carpe that diem.
Four Horsemen Studios has a long and storied career, so far as involvement in the “Action figures for boys who grew up, kind of” market goes. The company’s four chiefs originally worked for Todd McFarlane’s miniatures company, with a hand in the work that defined horror miniatures in the mid-90s–I still have their awesome werewolf set somewhere in my closet. So, these guys have cred. Their strategy lately has been to survey the internet to get fan input on their new lines, which may be why they’ve been sculpting species that are a few steps away from the usual cat girls and warrior tigers.
The “ravens” Kickstarter takes nonstandard and runs with it, with a warrior cardinal, vulture, griffin, phoenix, and a duck named “minotaur” (there’s a joke there that I’m not getting.) In the event that they meet their higher stretch goals, wings, both skeletal and feathery, make their appearance. Each of these figures is filled with little details–fretwork armor, sidearms, and so on. They will absolutely own your toy shelf at work, and put your coworkers’ pictures of their children to shame. However, Four Horsemen tends to work from the “collectible, short time only” model, so these may never make it to a toy store near you, and individual models may be harder to find than others, so the Kickstarter may be the only way to get a complete clutch of these guys.

Furfunding week in review: 7-7-13
Web-to-print: Webcomics coming soon to a bound book near you. Dreamkeepers: Prelude and Not Enough Rings.
This week a pair of very successful projects, two webcomics breaking out into print. These projects have a huge advantage: they came equipped with a fanbase! And like Digger (three more days, guys!) both vaulted into success story territory within a few days of project launch. So check out Dreamkeepers, already an ebook series, and Not Enough Rings, a silly Sonic parody series.
And then a bunch of other stuff.
Dreamkeepers: Prelude“If Dreamkeepers is Calvin and Hobbes against Hell, the preludes are more like Calvin and Hobbes.”
Dreamkeepers is a webcomic and graphic novel series–well, there’s the graphic novels, a dark fantasy series pitting dreamkeepers (anthropomorphic characters with a scattered assortment of powers) against the forces of nightmare. I’m not doing the series justice–though the Furaffinity page and the trailer video help–so feel free to poke around the graphic novel previews or just pop over to the webstore and buy yourself a copy. The original GN series is pretty darn dark and epic. Preludes is more bright and friendly, the stories of the characters before they were thrown into a grim battle.
Well, of course, like all webcomics, you can pick it up online for the low, low cost of bandwidth. But the art in this stuff is beautiful, well worth the support, so take a look!
Not Enough Rings: A Sonic the Hedgehog Parody ComicFrom the dark to the absurd (or, occasionally darkly absurd). Not Enough Rings is the second successful project from Veronica Vera (the first one is a very sweet anthro series about “high school, heartbreak, and cats.” Not Enough Rings takes an absurd look at the weirdness of the Sonic: The Hedgehog universe, dissects it, and spreads it on a table for you, the reader, to enjoy the laughs.
I’ll be honest, I’m not that well-versed in the Sonic universe, I only get one joke in five reading the webcomic. But the jokes–ridiculous killer architecture, demented mad science, and very, very disposable Tails the Fox–are easy on the eyes and good fun, even for a non-fan. The art’s a little quick-and-dirty, not as polished as the artists’ main project, Bittersweet Candy Bowl, but well worth the chuckle. And the Kickstarter’s already at double the original goal–the stretch goals are starting to kick in, so with 12 days left, check the project out!

Furfunding week in review: 6-29-13
Anthropomorphic strangeness from 1870 with The Taxidermy Wonders of Walter Potter.
First a quick callout to two familiar faces. Anthro: Animating the Soul is back for another round, after its last successful campaign for travel expenses. The film’s about a range of animated and “real life” anthro characters, and the people who love them. One of their stretch goals is to get to Anthrocon, which seems…well, pretty relevant. Also, for backers of the Pelted Primacy poker deck, DJKyota has returned for another chance at the brass ring–with cleaner artwork, beautiful pip cards, exciting high-pledge goals…good luck DJ!
This week, taxidermy. I know real fur is a contentious issue, but this one’s a look at a manifestation of anthropomorphic art from nearly 150 years in the dusty past. Victorian whimsy is almost as good as the whimsy we breed now.
And then a bunch of other stuff.
The Taxidermy Wonders of Walter Potter: A Short (?) FilmA disclaimer. Then, a bit of history.
The “animal rights” movement began in the Victorian era, hand in hand with the idea of pets, that an animal could be beloved. So the sheer number of…kittens…involved in this project may be a little disturbing, but at the time, we had a different relationship to animals. And we have the artist’s assurance that no animals were killed for his work.
The artist Walter Potter was a self-taught taxidermist who lived in England, 1835-1918. His career road the wave of Victorian whimsy. The people that brought us living tableaus, self-as-mummy portraiture, fairy art, Alice in Wonderland, and the fad diet, flocked to see his collection, “Mr. Potter’s Museum of Curiosities.” Potter made tableaus and dioramas like “The Kitten’s Wedding,” “Guinea Pig’s Cricket Match, ” squirrels at school, frog farmers, mouse laborers…as many as 10,000 specimens, many of them dressed in frills, jewelry, even bloomers. Check out some of them at Ink, Blood, and Magic, where I stole the illustration above.
Obviously, Walter Potter isn’t into crowdfunding. But Ronni Thomas, creator of the microdocumentary series of the dark, exotic, and flat-out weird The Midnight Archive, clearly is. He’s using Walter Potter’s story and art to launch into longer-length productions with his Kickstarter, and it’s a fascinating way to begin. Unfortunately, Potter’s work has scattered across the world, so there’s some travel expenses to cover. But this film, and a book released this September by one of Midnight Archive’s other principals, collects Potter’s corpus together one last time. Ronni Thomas’s productions have won their share of awards, and he’s certainly got a grasp on the morbid and darkly amusing. And the music! The score’s going to be by Real Tuesday Weld, a group with a quirky 20′s aesthetic that’ll work well with the subject. Furries: you should probably check out their animated music video, “Me & Mr. Wolf.”
All in all, a fascinating project with a great pedigree–and it’s already made its very modest goal!
(I usually try to keep the “just for fun!” stuff down to like five items, to avoid bogging the blog down with interesting-but-irrelevant stuff. This week, fun overload apparently.)

Fur-funding week in review: 6-22-13
Off-off-off Broadway with Fursona Non Grata and I Was Loved By A Rat.
This week a long-overdue callout for the “for the fandom” play, Fursona Non Grata, one of those comparatively rare projects that’s directly fandom-relevant: a play about bringing a significant other home to meet the pack. I Was Loved by a Rat is a little modern fairy tale about a lonely young woman and her house-rodent. Neither is coming to a theatre near you, but both are worth a look.
And then a bunch of other stuff.
Fursona Non Grata“A woman raised furry brings her fiance home to meet the family for the first time. Fur-larity ensues.”
Fursona Non Grata (FNG) is a two-act comedy about a young couple, a classic “meet the family” scenario, except that the family is, well, divergent. Mom and dad have a predator-prey thing happening, those mixed bobcat-zebra relationships never work out. The rest of the cast is variously genderqueer or alternative-species, leaving the young couple–Lisa and Dane–a little island of normality, until Lisa has to return to the pack to deal with a family crisis.
Skimming over the script (thank you, Reddit), the play is a banter-filled hour and a half of wacky, dense and rapid-fire, filled with family scraps, a challenging ex, and tons of one-liners and sly references, and a “why we are” monologue that’s actually pretty stirring. What’s hard to get in a reading is the “in the moment” of seeing the script as a play–Some of the characters and situations are cringe-inducing (not so different from real life in the fandom there) and it’s hard to imagine how they’d carry off on the stage.
However…however, the author is a real name in the world, the creator of American Dragon: Jake Long. And the play is quirky, but ultimately loving. FNG is a satire of the fandom, but a warm one, and while we as a fandom may try for a veneer of normalcy when the media looks at us, we are at the end of the day fond of our running jokes and crazy shared hallucination, and if FNG is a bit of a cringe-fest (and maybe I’m a bit of a cringer), that’s because it has fun with the hallucinations.
I Was Loved By A RatFringeNYC is a launchpad for strange and wonderful plays and musicals. And if you happen to be able to be in New York City in August, maybe you’ll be able to catch this one. I Was Loved By A Rat is a twisted little black comedy fairy-tale about Antonia, a lonely young woman alone in the big city, and the chivalrous rat, RG, living in her walls.
Over the course of the play we move from Antonia as exterminator to neighbor to friend, and then the strange and hazardous–and ultimately tragic–space between friendship and love. RG is aging and lonely himself, looking for humanity in his life.
Unfortunately it’s hard to find to find information on this play, it’s evolved over time. But for fans of talking-animal tales and bleak comedies, it looks like a winner–and very close to goal at this point.

Fur-funding week in review: 6-16-13
Graphic novel awesomeness this week with Digger, SOLO, and World War Kaiju.
Like 46 new pet-wrangling video games launched this week. There was the brief thought of giving them ALL their own posts, but, no, graphic novels. We’ll start with a quick mention for Digger, not sure it needs the publicity though! Then a look at the crazed Frazettaform rat-infested battle-orgy that is Solo: Cannibal World, and end on a (30 stories) high note with World War Kaiju.
And then a bunch of other stuff.
The Digger OmnibusSo, if you haven’t visited FurAffinity, SofaWolf Press, or, indeed, Kickstarter, you might have missed the launch of the Digger Omnibus kickstarter. It’s been pretty darn successful. I’m not sure SofaWolf had plans for $200,000 stretch goals, but they seem pretty reachable with the way week one has gone!
Digger is–was–a webcomic that ran from 2007-2011, in which Digger, a wombat miner, dug her way into a strange and dark world of gods (living, dead, between), hyenas, lizard-people…it’d be hard to do the series justice in a few words.
The kickstarter is an effort to fund a bound edition of all the Digger comics, and at this point, it’s a success. The higher-level opportunities are just as strange as the comics–your own wombat-sized miner’s pick, a talking fruit…it’s worth a tour of the site just to see the add-ons, but the comic itself is very pretty, and the bound edition is half-past time.
SOLO: Cannibal WorldOscar Martin’s professional work covers a broad spectrum, from serious commercial properties like Tom and Jerry and Simba to graphic novels in the style of Blacksad. Much of it is hard to find and inscrutable for us monolingual United Statesians, which is unfortunate, because he’s really really good. One of his more memorable characters is SOLO, a rat barbarian trying to rescue his family in a brutal post-apocalypse world. If you can somehow manage to find a halfway point between “Mad Max” and “Tom and Jerry” you’ve got it about right.
Along with a business partner, Martin is currently crowdfunding an animated version of his rat warrior, ideally a feature-length film. Unfortunately, it’s pretty Europe-only, but it’s a really neat project, worth a review, and possibly a few dollars just because the artist deserves it! When you finish glancing over SOLO’s IGG, check out Martin’s art blog. If you like your Frazetta you’ll love Martin’s work.
World War KaijuNot so furry perhaps, so we’ll keep it short, but worth a callout and a lookover, and I’m a sucker for retrohistorical alternate universe Soviet propaganda. World War Kaiju imagines a world where, instead of World War II ending with the first nuclear bombs dropping over Japan, the forces unleashed by the dark side of science were city-crushing monsters on the order of Godzilla and Gamara. Then, roll it forward to see how the next decades unfold.
The Kickstarter page is surprisingly immersive. One of the project goals is to create artifacts of the WWK world–cold war propaganda posters, kid’s products, even a “Duck and Cover” booklet are in the works. So, lots of toys, all very “period.” The World War Kaiju website does a better job of opening up the world, the beasts, and the first 17 pages of the graphic novel, so dig around there. (Note: The links on that page are oddly organized, your results may vary.)

Fur-funding week in revew 6/9/13
Highlights this week: Tonaba Strategic Card Game, Lions of Valletta
No theme, just two excellent Kickstarters. Tonaba: The Book of Secrets is a richly-illustrated, furry strategic card game, with an emphasis on narrative and strategy over luck and war. Then we calm down a bit with “Lions of Valletta,” a thoughtful graphic novel in the indie/talking animals school.
And then a bunch of other stuff.
Tonaba Strategic Card GameI really don’t know where to begin with this one. I’ll start with the game itself. Tonaba is a collectable card game. Its ties to the granddaddy of CCGs, Magic: The Gathering are strong, but they’re good ties–rules-light cards with good artwork and color text and an icon-driven design. Its departures from MTG are interesting, though: tight, 14-card decks step away from randomness and toward skill and strategy (it’s a high-agency game, in tabletop parlance.) The story elements of the game are unique: rather than pitting commanders and wizards in an epic war, the players are authors, using precious ink to scribe their minions into existence. It’s a refreshing lens.
The art really shines. Robert Cain has assembled a team of a dozen artists to bring the Tonaba world to life, and it’s good stuff! Nothing to disappoint a fan of realistic furry art.
As a crowdfunding wonk, I’m seriously impressed by the project launch. The timetable’s tight, just a month, but that builds buzz. The layout is clean, with a snexy infographic showing off the business plan. And if you visit Cain’s FA account you can help build more buzz: he’s offering Tonaba prizes to people who help with his awareness campaign. Excellent! The goal is high: $80,000. But not impossible. Check it out!
The Lions of VallettaAmazingly, this sweet graphic novel met its goal in three hours. I’ve seen that with big company products buoyed up by strong fan bases, but on something firmly planted in the indie comic tradition? That’s frankly amazing. So, no gamble here, just reward. Take a look.
Lions is set in Malta, Spain, and even glancing over the project’s Kickstarter page is immersive, a 10-second tour of a distant–geographically and in every other way–land. The characters are your typical talking cats, graceful and sweet little things, one a happy semi-feral dock cat, the other looking for a home.
It’s a story about home, philosophy, art, culture, architecture, and of course cats. And absolutely the sweetest graphic novel I’ve seen this year.

Fur-funding week in review: 6-2-13
Fandom Origins. Highlights this week: Antarctic Press: Keeping It Cold, Trek to Trot: A Fandom Tale.
Antarctic Press put out their “Big Ask” this week. It may be that old AP is kind of graymuzzle subject matter, since they dropped their furry titles, but this tenacious little indie comic company was there right from the beginning, hand-in-paw with the birth of the Fandom.
Then, “Trek to Trot,” a work in progress on the larger community of Fandoms, how they fit together, what we share, all that good stuff. In a way, it’s about our roots.
And then a bunch of other stuff.
First, a quick word of thanks to DJKyota, who did this week’s illustration. I should have used it last week when we talked about his card deck Kickstarter, Pelted Primacy, but that post was pretty busy already. That project is in its final 10-day countdown, take a look. Thanks, DJK!
Antarctic Press: Keeping it Cold in the AntarcticIt’s not much of an exaggeration to say that AP’s story is tied to the history of our fandom. In the crazy, dinosaur-infested days when the Internet was only available to college professors and the military, you wouldn’t know about, say, ConFurence, unless you found a copy of Furrlough, with an attractive cat girl on the cover, and found out “Wait, there’s a community, too?” Until the late 90’s, the fandom was black and white indie comics. And Antarctic Press, publishers of Albedo, Furlough, Genus, Shanda the Panda, and others, took a chance on us in a big way, through most of the ’90s.
Granted, that’s history now, and most of their furry titles were picked up by Radio Comix across the street. But it’s important history.
Now for the ask. It’s clear there’s something in the water in San Antonio, since Radio Comix had their own SOS on indiegogo back in March. The Antarctic Press Indiegogo tells more of the story, it boils down to “Boy meets large chain stores, they have a thing, large chain stores send boy the bill (and a bazillion returned books), boy spends rest of life in debt.”
Anyway, take a look. If you can afford it, make a little donation. It’s a good way to say “thank you” for the fandom we have today, and one of the teams that helped pave the way.
Trek to Trot: A Fandom TaleSo…I don’t know how many times I’ve tried to write “Tail” instead of “tale.”
If you follow the Adjective Species blog, you might have read JM’s article “Distant Cousins,” about the harmonies between the various fandoms, “we’re all fen together.” A good article, particularly when we’ve gotten to a place where we’re divided by cartoon shows.
Our origins are in the science fiction fandom–waaaay back in 1980 or 81, Steve Gallacci pulled out some pictures of cute cat girls and fighter spacecraft at a California sci-fi con, and like an infectious culture spreading in a petri dish, we get to today’s crazy collage of furs and furry friends. Trek to Trot: A Fandom Tale looks at the greater world of Fandoms–bronies, furries, trekkies, gamers, and asks how fans are benefited by their fandom families.
Through a documentary style pulling in interviews, experts, convention scenes, and dramatizations of historical crossroad moments, Trek to Trot aims to put the focus on the fans, and what the greater Fandom of fandoms, gives its members.

Fur-funding week in review: 5-26-13
Not playing with a full pack of wolves. Highlights this week: Terreria Tactics, Pelted Primacy. Alliteration: it’s so hot right now!
Tabletop gaming this week! The first project we look at is Terreria Tactics, a science fiction vs. fantasy skirmish card game. The setting won me over immediately, as it combines the best elements of slinky and visually interesting dragons with vaguely “Aperture Science”-esque robots, but it turns out there’s actually a GAME under the visuals! The second, Pelted Primacy, is self-consciously old-school, a handsome furry take on the standard “Bicycle” playing cards, a very attractive deck.
And then a bunch of other stuff.
Terreria Tactics
Terreria Tactics is a card-based strategy game designed to represent the small parties and turn-by-turn play of skirmishing RPG video games. Game play is small and focused, for a table of two or four players, with play, I’m guessing, from 1-2 hours.
The artwork really stands out. The setting is a medieval fantasy world, with anthropomorphic dragons and eagles, and presumably some other races, but they had me with the dragons. Artist MegillaKitty, who did today’s fantastic illustration in Terreria Tactics style, is the lead artist, lots of sneak previews on her gallery. You can also see some of Arkristokat’s work on DA, another contributing artist.
Immediately obvious “pros” to the game–the game designer has seriously done his homework, and the game starts out with strong play examples, with play-through videos on the kickstarter, so novices and outsiders can get a sense of the game. There are tactical elements, resource management, and a bit of the “Magic: The Gathering” element of “troops are the line of defense for the player herself.” Players select a handful of characters, items, actions, and one location card, revealing their cards as they activate them, and characters can gain experience and complexity as the skirmish progresses forward.
In many ways the game echoes Magic: The Gathering, but with a tighter focus on a small, finite battle field (and, blessedly, smaller decks). The artwork and look of the product is very professional, and more extensive information is available on the TT Website.
Good luck, guys! Well-done writeup and slick-looking product. I’m waiting for my boxed set!
Pelted PrimacyPelted Primacy is a much more traditional product–a deck of playing cards built to the “Bicycle” playing card standard. Much of the deck is reworked in small ways–the paw print pip cards stand out in particular as a cute touch. But the court cards have been reenvisioned as elegant furry nobles, brooding and somber as befits, say, the Queen of Spades–the joker’s always the only one that’s willing to crack a smile!
Recently DJKyota opened up some commission slots as a part of his higher-level goals (and, much to my surprise, used Corbeau as his banner art!) As I’m writing, I can’t help noticing that the “King of Hearts” slot is open. I can’t imagine that one will stay around long…I can think of a few foxes that would jump on that one :)
DJKyota, a word–if you swap out the current Jack of Clubs I will be very put out. Just so you know.

Fur-funding week in review: 5-19-13
Highlights for the week: The Pokémusical; Catmandu’s 3-Storey Carpeted Cat Tree.
Two projects from the “you won’t be able to attend” file…unfortunately! With Burning Man coming up soon, the greater weirdo-artistic community has been revving up their engines and getting ready to hit the alkaline flats, and would like to remind you that large, bizarre art installments don’t just pay for themselves. One of these, Catmandu’s massive cat gym, really hits the intersection of playful, creative, and fuzzy that we live in. Then one for the Pokémon fans–their very own parody musical.
And then a bunch of other stuff.
Catmandu: Bringin’ Those Cats BackThe internet doesn’t lie. Bearing in mind that principle, 5000 years ago the earth was visited by giant alien cat overlords, wise and powerful beings who gave us art, culture, and probably would have taught us the secret of licking ourselves, but were whisked back to space for reasons the internet has not clearly outlined. And now, we have a chance–ONE CHANCE–to go to the playa, and with the cat-luring power of lasers, draw them back to earth.
Obviously, this has to work.
Obviously, the Catmandu Research Institute can explain the science behind all this better than I can, frankly it’s a bit over my head. Their promo video is its own form of brilliant weirdness, totally worth the price of admission.
What’s the final product? A massive, three-storey cat gymnasium, what may be the world’s largest cat tree. It’s certainly going to be the largest one on the playa. The entire thing is carpeted, loaded with swings and rings and hopefully at least one jinglebell, and most importantly, has its lasers trained on the stars, the better to lure the cat overlords back to earth. There’s a few rewards on the Kickstarter–patches, necklaces, the usual semi-related swag. But when the overlords return and share their wisdom with us, I think you’d be glad to have been a part of it.
The PokémusicalPokémon leaves us with so many unanswered questions. What happens to the little guys when they get shoved into balls? Why must they fight? Do they feel pain? Love? Do they love pain? I have no idea if the Pokémusical will answer these questions, probably not. But the Pokémusical Kickstarter‘s promo video asks us to take a thoughtful look at man’s relationship to pocket monster. They feel. They grieve. And they need your support.
As does the cast of Pokémusical, a musical send-off of Ash Ketchum’s first day of his pokemon journey. What’s it like? What’s the full Pokémusical experience? You can get a taste of it in their Media Collection, but you may have to take the journey to Los Angeles to live the dream.

Zach Braf, director of “Garden State,” kickstarting a geeky comedy drama, shot partly at ComiCon (skip ahead to 2:40 or so), where one of the main characters enters a cosplay contest to win over a sexy furry.
It’s a HUGE stretch to call this “furry,” so…bottom of the list. But it’s a friendly nod to furs in a nearly-mainstream film, and that’s worth a mention.
Manos: The Hands of Felt (Ends: 6/3/2013)
An all-puppet musical recreation of cult classic “Manos, The Hands of Fate.”
Fur-funding week in review: 5/12/13
Highlights for the week: Metamorphosis: Birth of a Dragon; Zombies in a Half Shell; Golden Sky Stories.
With two full months of projects to cherry pick, finding some real gems to explore was easy enough (limiting myself to three, though, that was a trick.) This week, we look at Metamorphosis: Birth of a Dragon, a documentary exploring the transformation through body modification of human into serpent; Zombies in a Half Shell, an indie art web tribute which the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are very much not the heroes; and Golden Sky Stories, a tabletop role-playing game from Japan about gentle, shape-changing magical animals.
And then a bunch of other stuff.
Metamorphosis: Birth of a DragonEva Medusa’s transformation has been years in the making, Eva’s skin slowly becoming a full-body pattern of rich green, blue and yellow scales, forehead a crown of horn and ridge, eyes…eyes a shocking green. She is also dealing with the challenges of a male-to-female gender correction, transforming her body and identity into a dragon-lady.
Eva blogs on G+, and is active on many body modification communities (Did you know there was a website devoted to species modification? Life and the internet are full of surprises…)
The IGG, “Metamorphosis: Birth of a Dragon” touches on parts of Eva’s story, its focus is her first public appearance. More generally, it’s a look at body transformation and recreating identity. While the specifics of Eva’s story—tattoos, gender modification, etc—may not be everyone’s cup of tea, the expression of self-as-new-species is very close to the heart of furry (if there is such a place…)
Zombies in a Half ShellIs it really 30 years since Eastman and Laird first gave four turtles ninja masks and a cool rat mentor? How mass media syndication makes the time fly. Zombies in a Half Shell asks some compelling questions, like “what if the glowing mutagenic ooze in the sewers was actually Standard Zombie Formula #16?” Or, “what if The Foot Clan was our only hope against the forces of darkness?”
And then it answers them in a gritty, gory indie apocalypse. The project comprises several artists, but much of the look echoes the look of the early Turtles, a cornerstone of the Indie comic movement. But with more zombies. Maybe the zombie apocalypse card is overplayed, but these are some impressive undead.
If there was one criticism I have of this project, it’s that the KS is a real puzzler. I read the site twice and wasn’t sure what was going on with pledge levels and stretch goals. But I’m not sure I care. It may be a side-effect of Kickstarter’s “projects only” model. And I really like undead rats.
Golden Sky StoriesIf Dungeons & Dragons is a grueling climb in a driving thunderstorm on a mountain covered in cats-claw vines, Golden Sky Stories is an early evening lakeside walk holding a friend’s hand, a single cherry blossom obscuring the camera.
Stories in Golden Sky revolve around friendship and solving challenges in a small enchanted town (I suspect no dragons were slain in the making of this RPG.) Players take the roles of foxes, raccoon dogs, rabbits, birds, and such creatures. The illustrations are charming, and with eight days left, the KS is at nearly 10 times their original goal. An auspicious beginning!
I’m always glad to see the TRPG hobbistry step away from bloodshed and toward character and mood, and from the positive response from the KS community, this is a very welcome project.
