Update on SportyPup’s Condition

Fri 11 Feb 2011 - 01:12

This is reposted from his FA Journal:

Sporty Gives a Thumbs Up

Another update…. I’m gonna try my best to keep everyone updated as much as possible.

If you’re not really sure what’s going on you can read the articles about my health issue at:
www.FurryNewsNetwork.com
www.GeorgiaFurs.com

I really want to start off by thanking everyone once again, all of you have my eternal gratitude. How everyone has come together to help in so many ways is truly astounding. Once again, I couldn’t be more proud to be a furry.

I had to go see my doctor yesterday, and to be honest it wasn’t a good visit.  I was kinda hoping for some good news but didn’t get any. My heart is becoming weaker with overworking itself. Now I’m suppose to stay in bed until the surgery, and still no date for the surgery. Grrrrrrrrrr. Come on, my name is Sporty for a reason, I like to be active. Don’t worry though, I’m gonna listen to him and stay calm and relaxed as much as possible. I won’t lie to y’all though, I’m kinda worried, I can feel the difference, the strain, the fatigue. I still hold my head up high, and thanks to all of you my spirits are still at a all time high.  *hugs you all tight*

As for the donations update. We are currently up to $8311.72 to be exact, out of the $16,500 needed for the surgery. We still have roughly $8200 more to go. We are still excepting donations through paypal. Every penny adds up to make a huge difference, even if its just a dollar or two. If you would like to make a donation you can donate through paypal to driftinbears[at]hotmail.com

There are also still a couple auctions going on. You can view them at:
www.thedealersden.com

Also if you are a artist and would like to help out please contact  sinabu who is handling the artist auctions.

Thank you all for spreading the word so much, it really does mean a lot to me. And I urge you all to keep continuing to spread the word. It will help keep everyone updated and informed.

Also, I’m still really out of it, mentally and physically. If I haven’t responded yet to a note or comment that you might of sent me, please know that i’m not ignoring you, it’s just gonna take some time so please be patient with me. Some days are just bad and I don’t even get out of bed, but whenever I have good moments I hop right on here and try my best to reply to as many as I can.

Thank you all again for everyones help, love, compassion, and understanding.
*hugs you all tightly*

As we get updates on Sporty’s condition, we will continue to update everyone.

Furry Needs Our Help For Donations For Heart Surgery

Wed 9 Feb 2011 - 17:02

02/02/2011
By: Lucky Wolf

Sorty and his son KodaOne of our own greatly really needs our help. SportyPup, who is a local Georgia fur needs to have surgery due to a bad valve in his heart. This particular condition is called Valvular Heart Disease, and if not treated will cause heart failure. The surgery will take $40,000 total, but needs $16,500 up front, just to be able to have the surgery. The remaining $24,000 will be billed later, so he needs to get this money soon. The longer Sporty has to wait for the surgery, the greater the risk is of heart failure. The hope is to have enough to be able to have the surgery later this month in Asheville, NC., but only if the doctor see’s that the amount needed will come in quickly after.

Sporty, is currently 30 years old, but will be 31 in March. Besides being a furry and occasional fursuiter, he is also a father of a 3 1/2 year old boy, named Koda. Sporty currently lives in Macon, Georgia.

Sporty and friends are now asking for donations towards the surgery through paypal. Even if you’re only able to donate a couple dollars anything helps, so they ask everyone who reads this to please donate something. Friend’s are even putting items up on thedealersden.com to help raise money. Sporty is a really awesome guy, and really needs our help to make this happen. You can make a donation too, through the paypal link below.

Even with all the drama that goes on in this fandom, I have also seen this fandom do a lot of good, and really come together when one of our own needs help, and I would hope this no exception.

FNN Editor’s note: I do not know SportyPup personally. The details of his current situation have been verified through several well respected community members.

Furry Study 2011; Participants Needed

Wed 9 Feb 2011 - 17:00

Furries are a greatly misunderstood subculture.  To better help understand the “Furry Fandom” – the mindsets of the participants, and how we compare to and differ from other fandoms (i.e. sci-fi and fantasy based fandoms),  the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and Niagara County Community College in Sanborn, New York, are conducting an international online survey of the Furry Fandom.

Conducting the study is Courtney “Nuka” Plante, a furry social psychology graduate student at the University of Waterloo and Dr. Kathy Gerbasi, a social psychologist at the Niagara County Community College in Sanborn, New York.

Dr. Gerbasi and Courtney (Nuka)  have been studying furries through the use of rigorous scientific methodology in the hopes of understanding furries and their fandom. There is a lot of bad media and misinformation about furries, and they hope that by scientifically studying the furry fandom they can do away with misconceptions regarding the furry fandom.

Dr. Gerbasi has conducted a survey at Anthrocon for the last 5 years now, and while the results have certainly been informative, it is felt that a great many furries are left out of the research. As such, this will be a large-scale online international furry survey d in the hopes of getting as many furries to complete the survey as possible.

There will be draws for prizes as an incentive for people to participate, and they are hoping that furries will be interested to participate in actual scientifically valid research that’s being conducted by furries and fur-friendly researchers.

This is the study website’s url:
https://artsweb.uwaterloo.ca/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/cplante/Furry2011

Dr. Samuel “Uncle Kage” Conway was contacted as a reference.  He had very positive things to say about the survey and those conducting it.

Dr. Gerbasi has been the very essense of professionalism in her study. She sought my input on drafting the proposal and delivered a copy of the university’s IRB approval. Anthrocon has fully supported her research and has never had a complaint as to her methods. Mr. Plante has worked closely with her and has shown a similar level of professionalism and to the scientific integrity of the study.

FNN has further verified the validity of the survey through the University of Waterloo’s Research Ethics office, as well as reviewed the survey in it’s entirety.  All details check out and the survey its self does not have a negative or positive bias.

If you are interested in participating in the survey, we strongly encourage it.  A study of this nature may make a difference in how we are seen and treated as a subculture in the future.

Positive or negative, Furry News Network will follow the outcome of this and report back any findings once the research project is concluded and the results published.

Movie Review: Legend of the Guardians

Mon 7 Feb 2011 - 23:33

This film follows the adventures of a young owl before he can fly as he and his brother are kidnapped.   The young owl escapes the kidnappers along with another young owl.  These two owls set out to find the Guardians of Ga’hoole in order to rescue the other young owls who have been kidnapped by the group.  The young owl eventually finds the Guardians after many trials and much sacrifice.  The film culminates in a climactic battle in which the kidnappers are vanquished thanks in no small part to the young owl whom the film centers upon.

I held great hopes for this movie, and they were somewhat dashed by some of the slowness early in the film.  It takes a while for all of the puzzle pieces to come together and put you on the edge of your seat.  All in all a good film but not great, the score is fantastic, and when the story really starts to come together you don’t want to stop watching.  The most difficult part of this film is getting through the slow and seemingly dis-jointed parts early in the film.  Had I written this review before or while it were in theaters I would have suggested to wait for it on DVD to rent and watch.  The story once it comes together is very enthralling and Hollywood needs more original material such as this to keep audiences coming back for more.

ZodiaCon debuts May; offers change from ?eSFuR

Mon 7 Feb 2011 - 13:56

Author: GreenReaper

Emilka.jpgCzech furs (along with a few Germans, Poles and Slovaks) intend to celebrate “the dawn of time” at a new event: ZodiaCon, to be held 20–22 May at the Hotel Emilka near Tanvald in the Czech Republic.

The price, 1400 CZK (~58€, US$ 79) – rising to 1600 on March 1 – includes two nights’ accomodation and three meals a day. Sponsorship and dog permits are available. There are currently 65 attendees of a maximum 83.

The event provides an alternative to long-running local convention ?eSFuR, which is moving to a larger hotel with 145 beds. ZodiaCon’s staff hope to provide more flexible topic-based programming tracks. Fortunately, local furs can enjoy both, as ?eSFuR will be held in July.

Leon of the Neko Cafe Leon

Author: Rakuen Growlithe

Cat cafés are coffee houses including a seperate room where customers are able to play with cats. They are particularly popular in Japan, perhaps due to many apartments forbidding pets, with Tokyo having between 30 and 40 such cafés.

At the request of Jerry Coyne, Japanese blogger Yokohamamama visited one of these cafés, the Neko Café Leon, and posted a report about her experiences.

Rabbit armorDevelopers of rabbit-based beat-em-up Lugaru HD are battling to get an unauthorized copy removed from the Apple App Store.

iCoder is offering the game for just $ 1.99. The official verison sells for $ 9.99. [iDuck/Slashdot]

Gaming blog Kotaku reports that Apple are “looking into what happened”, and also hosts a quote from iCoder saying that they “have every legal right to market and sell the software”.

The game’s code was released under the GPL last May while developers focussed on their new game, Overgrowth; however, for-profit distribution of the game’s assets was not authorized.

Rogue coder’s attack takes F-List down

Thu 3 Feb 2011 - 10:56

Author: GreenReaper

Furry roleplaying description site F-List is down after an attack from a disgruntled developer.

While the developer’s SSH access had been removed, he regained access through a backdoor. The coder gave all users administrative rights, including access to email addresses and IP logs.

In a maintenance notice, F-List founder Hexxy urged calm:

F-List will be fine. The only interest we have is in bringing the site back up, and ensuring everything is secure. A former coder uses his access to F-List’s servers to mess things up. No permanent damage has been done, but things are a little emotional right now. Don’t do anything stupid, that doesn’t help anyone, it just creates more damage.

Repairs to the site are expected to take at least two days, but a temporary copy is available.

Creators of “My Strange Addiction” Casting for more Furries

Wed 2 Feb 2011 - 23:42

20West TV, Creators of TLC’s “My Strange Addiction” is again casting for Furries.

Do you wish you were an animal? Are you more comfortable wearing a fursuit, acting like a dog, or getting tattoos to look like a lizard? If you have altered your appearance to look like an animal, exhibit transhuman behavior, or participate in furry fandom, we want to hear from you.

A reality TV production company is casting for people who have gone to extreme measures to create an alternate identity to appear in an upcoming series. This non-exploitative program will share compelling personal stories. Each half-hour episode will profile two individuals who feel more comfortable living out animal-based fantasies or personas – including dogs, foxes, and lizards or even vampires and werewolves.

To be considered, or for more information about this production, please send your name, age, city, and a current photo to [email protected]. Please provide a brief description of your animal tendencies and behaviors and how it has impacted your life.

The ad was seen on Craigslist San Fransisco here.

Thanks to Tenza Aohane (@the10za) for the heads up!

Edit:  Looking at the description listed, this may be a show highlighting Furries, Weres, Vampires and transhumanists.  Looking at the shows they currently have in production, this would be something new.  What worries me is the term “non-exploitative” being used in the text.

Please posts opinions, rants and the like below.

Anthrocon also reports that the Courtyard hotel is completely booked for Sunday. The next closest with doubles – and also the most expensive – is the Omni William Penn. Meanwhile, the DoubleTree is cheaper but twice as far, and the flood of fans broke their online booking system.
