Researchers at Indiana University have found flame retardants in the blood of pet dogs at levels five to ten times higher than typically found in humans. Could dogs be the canary in the coal mine for how accumulating polybrominated flame retardants will affect humans?

A group of teenagers dressed as Easter bunnies were turned away from a zoo - amid fears they would 'psychologically damage' the animals.
Cancer-sufferer Laura Gibson, 15, and her friends were told to change out of their costumes before entry into Edinburgh Zoo in case they upset the creatures.
The trip had been planned as a special treat for the teen, who was joined by friends Hannah, Kirsty and Becki Nicholson and her brother Cameron, who was dressed as a chicken.

23,000 Bunnies Dead in Easter Sunday Massacre

Tue 26 Apr 2011 - 03:24
The shooting of more than 23,000 rabbits in New Zealand during a charity hunting event held over the Easter vacation weekend has drawn fire from animal welfare campaigners.

While organizers of the annual Great Easter Bunny Hunt, held across the southern region of New Zealand's South Island, argued the event was ridding farmland of an introduced, rampant pest species, welfare group Safe saw things differently, the Sunday Star-Times reported.

Safe director Hans Kriek said the event promoted the killing of animals in a "party atmosphere."

"It's seen as a party atmosphere, sending people out as inexperienced hunters blasting away at animals," he said. "The ones they kill are one thing, the ones they injure are another."

Hunt spokesman Dave Ramsay said the rabbit problem was at its worst in the region for 20 years, and the annual event raised thousands for local charities.

In total 47 teams -- with 12 shooters each -- from all over New Zealand took part, Ramsay told The Otago Daily Times.

Although the event only carries total prize money of NZ$3,500 (US$2,800), the most sought-after prize was the trophy for the team which shoots the greatest number of rabbits, he said.

Alexis Dunbar, Florida Woman, Finds 7-Foot Alligator In Her Bathroom (VIDEO)

Tue 26 Apr 2011 - 03:18
PALMETTO, Fla. (AP) -- A Tampa-area woman found an unwelcome weekend guest in her bathroom – a 7-foot alligator.

Alexis Dunbar says she screamed and the alligator hissed when she found it inside the bathroom of her home Saturday afternoon. Her boyfriend propped a small table by the bathroom to keep the gator inside until an officer from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission showed up to take him away.

Dunbar believes the alligator used a doggie door on the back porch to get inside the house. Dunbar lives in Palmetto, which is south of St. Petersburg.

Spring is mating season for alligators and wildlife officials urge people to be extremely cautious, especially around water.

President Obama Didn't Do Enough To Celebrate Easter, Critics Say

Tue 26 Apr 2011 - 03:15
One of the things that's a "thing" today is that people, driven by a Fox Nation story, are complaining about the Obama White House's failure to issue a proclamation about Easter. The White House, of course, hosted an Easter Egg Roll, and the president also hosted an Easter-themed prayer breakfast, at which he said this:

"I wanted to host this breakfast for a simple reason -- because as busy as we are, as many tasks as pile up, during this season, we are reminded that there's something about the resurrection -- something about the resurrection of our savior, Jesus Christ, that puts everything else in perspective.

"We all live in the hustle and bustle of our work... But then comes Holy Week. The triumph of Palm Sunday. The humility of Jesus washing the disciples' feet. His slow march up that hill, and the pain and the scorn and the shame of the cross. And we're reminded that in that moment, he took on the sins of the world -- past, present and future -- and he extended to us that unfathomable gift of grace and salvation through his death and resurrection.

"In the words of the book Isaiah: "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."

"This magnificent grace, this expansive grace, this 'Amazing Grace' calls me to reflect. And it calls me to pray. It calls me to ask God for forgiveness for the times that I've not shown grace to others, those times that I've fallen short. It calls me to praise God for the gift of our son -- his Son and our Savior."

DeathSpank Dev's New Game Mashes Up Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies

Sat 23 Apr 2011 - 05:32
Indie developer Hothead Games surprised people with the simultaneous announcement and release of its newest game today, Bunny the Zombie Slayer for iOS.
Appropriately enough for Easter, you play as a bunny who shoots eggs at attacking zombies. The debut trailer makes it look like a combination of Plants vs. Zombies (in that there are zombies shambling across someone's yard from right to left) and Angry Birds (you fling eggs, slingshot-style, to take out your enemies).

The developer offered up the following description: "You control a heroic bunny, who must protect children searching for his eggs from waves of Zombie Hordes. These once-deceased characters (nurses, businessmen, cheerleaders and more) will stop at nothing to take what is most precious from these young ovo-searchers. Using the Bunny?s weapon of choice, brightly colored eggs, you can unleash a yolky fury to dismember and decapitate the undead. Aim for the head!"

Pokemon vs. Digimon

Sat 23 Apr 2011 - 04:56
"I've seen so many people compare the two that I thought I'd just make a comic about it.
Also, this is a joke.
Sort of.
But while both are clearly fantastical creatures that coudn't exist in real life, from what I know of the two, it seems like pokemon at least has some sort of pseudo-science or logic regarding the designs, anatomy, and functions of various aspects of the creatures of the pokemon universe while digimon seems to enjoy packing on as much armor and spiked metal as humanly fucking possible. Not saying one is inferior or superior, but that's what it looks like lol. Then again, I haven't followed digimon in like a decade or something."

Spring Cleaning = Donations

Sat 23 Apr 2011 - 04:55
"Hey furs! We are right in that time of year when a lot of people start looking at cleaning out their homes and maybe getting rid of some things. If you are thinking of cleaning out some of your belongings, before you give everything to a resale shop look through your stuff and see if anything might be great for the Tiger Haven charity auction.

Maybe you have an awesome collection of wolf plushes that you just don't appreciate as much anymore. Or something geeky, like a cool old computer game, that you no longer use.

Maybe you love all your belongings but happen to enjoy frequenting yard sales. Keep an eye out for something great to get just for the auction.

If none of these appeal to you then you still can help, we need buyers at the auction. Are you getting your tax return soon? Don't blow it all right away, save some to spend at MFM in the Tiger Haven charity auction.

The kitties will thank you!

Also, if you are unable to get an item for donation to the auction at MFM you are welcome to send it to me to get it there for you.

I am unfortunately having to move in just over a week so if you shipped something to me previously, that old address is no longer valid. Please contact me for the new address, by emailing; princess.ambi at gmail . com I will need to know how you will be sending the donation because my address will now be a bit odd and mail has to go to one location while packages have to go to another.

Every bit of help that you can give goes to keeping these wonderful kitties in a safe and loving home at Tiger Haven Sanctuary!"
