New Howard the Duck comic book series to launch Wednesday
Well, this story just keeps on getting more and more appropriate.
Not long after making his return to movies in the after credits gag from Guardians of the Galaxy after an infamous 1986 outing, Howard the Duck will gain his first ongoing comic since 1979 (not counting a mostly official two issue continuation of the series in 1986 in conjunction with the movie). He's appeared in various mini-series since that time, with many guest spots and cameos (Marvel writer Brian Michael Bendis has claimed never to have typed the words "Howard the Duck" despite the character appearing in the background of multiple series by him), and he was one of the non-zombie leads in the Marvel Zombies 5 mini-series, but this is first ongoing since the seventies.
The new series will be written by Chip Zdarsky with art by Joe Quinones. It will retail for $3.99 and has a rating from Marvel of T+.
The solicit from Diamond Previews reads:

Join him as he takes on the weird cases that only a talking duck can crack as the Marvel Universe’s resident private investigator!” Let Sex Criminals’ Chip Zdarsky (a writer known mostly as an artist) and Joe Quinones (an artist known mostly as a lover) guide you through his new world as he takes on the Black Cat and mysterious forces from outer space! Waugh!
This is another series from Marvel constituting a bit of a "humorous furry" renaissance in the company; Rocket Raccoon launched last year, taking the number one best-selling spot for July and becoming the third best selling single issue of the year. Also launching early this year was semi-furry The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, giving the cult superheroine and her talking squirrel sidekick, Tippy Toe, their first series.

I've been meaning to collect some of the older issues of Howard for a long time, heard fantastic things about his comic series. Mostly I'm familiar with his 2002 series (which had a short 6 issue run, and started off with him transforming into a Mickey Mouse type form) - enjoyed that series thoroughly; can't say I much enjoyed the short 2007 series for Howard though.
This series should be great if they stick to the original comic book traits of the character, the eighties movie version is better off left forgotten.
I picked this issue up (expect an official review ... sometime this decade, and I'm not really kidding), but for now I'll say it was kind of disappointing. Marvel/superhero/furry fans should definitely check out the Rocket Raccoon and Squirrel Girl comics, but unless this one gets better, it may just be for completionists (especially when you've also got IDW's TMNT series to fulfill at least the superhero/furry junkie's needs).
If it's not written by Steve Gerber (R.I.P.), it's not Howard the Duck.
